When we think of wealth, we often picture bank accounts or property. But some of our most valuable assets are living right outside our windows.
The forests, rivers, wetlands, and soils that surround us aren’t just beautiful - they’re working hard behind the scenes, cleaning our water, pollinating crops, storing carbon, and supporting the biodiversity that keeps ecosystems in balance.
This 'natural capital' is the foundation of our wellbeing and economy. It includes all the benefitsknown as ecosystem services - that nature provides for free. Yet, these services are often invisible in the decisions we make, leading to biodiversity loss and declining environmental health.
The more we understand the value of nature, the better we can protect it. Every native bird, wetland,
or patch of bush plays a role in this living system. Investing in nature isn’t just good for the environment - it’s a smart strategy for long-term resilience, especially in the face of climate change. By recognising biodiversity as a key pillar of our natural capital, we ensure that future generations inherit a landscape that continues to give back. After all, a thriving natural world is the greatest legacy we can leave behind.
Thursday, 22 May is World Biodiversity Day. Ben Youngman, WAI Wānaka’s Science and Research Lead, has written a series of blogs to provide readers with a general understanding of the concept of natural capital and ecosystems.
Find out more about the Upper Clutha Native Biodiversity Strategy at www.waiwanaka.nz/research-monitoring/ Head to www.waiwanaka.nz/home/news/ to read the natural capital blogs.
