MY COMMUNITY NEWS “Ready, set, GO!” at this year’s Hawea Picnic Races The annual Hawea Picnic Races will take place on the 28th December, providing an excellent day of family fun for all ages. The races have been running since 1945 have a wide array of fun and games for the kids and an equalisator tote on site for the races, (where everyone has the same chance of winning). There are eight horse races with the first races starting at 12.30pm. The kids events start at 10am. There will also be a chocolate wheel, bouncy castle, various side shows, food, and raffles. This year for the first time a collection of classic cars grouped together for public viewing. Entries are welcome on the day. LINK Upper Clutha looking ahead to 2018 the benefits of knowing your neighbours and LINK’s “have a cuppa” campaign will encourage neighbourhood connection. Many locals will remember the phenomenon “Get Dotted” run in 2009 – a skill building event that explains the different ways we think and communicate. LINK brings the Dots back on June 20-21 – it’s professional and personal development for all, it’s entertaining and effective, and you won’t want to miss it! Speaking of connection, the monthly drop-in LINK Connection Cafés are a great way to meet others, get advice, and learn about a current topic of interest.
LINK asked 3 simple questions in 2017 – what do you love about our community, what could be even better, and how could you help? This year the community development scheme has worked with the ideas and input submitted; facilitating connection and action through a variety of projects. Residents have come to understand the region’s growth and the implications for infrastructure, economic and social development. In 2018 LINK
will focus on building community capability to plan for the future – because everyone has a part to play. The LINK team will continue its community incubator work – mentoring groups in their collaboration, development, or evolution with information and advice. In February a new matching fund will be launched to financially support community-led initiatives. Neighbours Day Aotearoa in March highlights

Bring on Christmas Wanaka. I’ve spent a bit of time in the suburbs tonight and some of the decorations are looking fantastic. This week some of the people we dealt with would have been better off decorating their homes than going out and making fools of themselves. On Monday we took a complaint of a petrol drive off but the driver was located and returned the next day and paid in full. Oops… Just a bit too much going on?? On Tuesday we took a complaint of a Bose docking station being stolen from the Wanaka Yacht Club. This was on the 8th of December. Bring it back!! It was a sad Friday with the drowning of a 26 year old male in Lake Wanaka near Stevenson’s Island. These incidents are devastating for the family and workmates. Please be careful in and around the water. We had two windows smashed by an intoxicated male in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was located due to some good work thanks to quality neighbours keeping an eye on him until we arrived. Police and SAR were called when a 21 year old visitor separated from the rest of her party and when she wasn’t where she was expected to be, the alarm was raised. She was located a short time later but this is a good reminder to stick to a plan and also don’t forget to be prepared in the hills even on a short walk. Weather conditions change here rapidly at times. We took a complaint of a highly intoxicated male letting himself into an address on Beacon Point Road. He was found asleep inside in the morning. This is very poor behaviour. It is always unacceptable to enter a stranger’s home and is the result of a person who cannot control his drinking. Keep an eye on your consumption people and this sort of thing won’t happen.
