Talk explores the science, ethics and controversy of de-extinction

The Wānaka Branch of the Royal Society will present Mythbusting De-Extinction, featuring Associate Professor Nic Rawlence from the University of Otago’s Department of Zoology, at 6.00pm on Friday, 22 May at the Wānaka Presbyterian Community Church, 94 Tenby Street. All are welcome to attend, with non-members asked to make a $10 donation at the door.

The Wānaka Branch of the Royal Society brings leading thinkers, highly regarded in their fields of knowledge and expertise, to speak about their work. Each year, the programme features ten eminent national speakers.

De-extinction hit the headlines recently with the reported ‘resurrection’ of the dire wolf, a species native to the Americas that lived between 125,000-10,000 years ago, along with the push to bring back the moa

(extinct 500-600 years ago) and the dodo, which became extinct around 1690. However, can scientists actually de-extinct animals, and more importantly, should they?

Using modern genetic engineering techniques, are researchers actually recreating extinct species, or are they instead producing hybrids that only resemble the originals? And with many ancient ecosystems now drastically changed or completely gone, what would reintroducing these species mean for the modern world? The talk will delve into the science, ethics, and indigenous concerns surrounding de-extinction.

Adaptive Snow Sports Programme volunteers sought

Do you have a passion for snow sports? And would like to share it with others?

The Cardrona Adaptive Snow Sports Programme is seeking volunteers for the winter 2026 season to make snow sports accessible to everyone!

Thanks to the support of Snow Sports New Zealand, the program has been running successfully for more than 25 years and couldn’t run without the help of passionate volunteers who provide on-snow support for people of various physical, cognitive and sensory abilities.

Volunteers assist, encourage, provide a safe environment and help guests have a great time up the mountain. Does this sound like you?

As volunteers training slots are limited, we recommend signing up early.

We will be running a volunteer information evening on Thursday, 4 June at 6.30pm at Cardrona Basecamp, 50 Cardrona Valley Road in Wānaka. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the program and get to know fellow volunteers.

Intermediate ski/snowboard ability is a must, but no previous experience with adaptive snow sports is required. A volunteer induction and all necessary training on and off snow will be provided.

Mountain Film Festival - global stories, local talent

The NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival returns to Wānaka from 19–23 June, bringing a vibrant mix of films, speakers and community events to one of the region’s favourite fixtures.

Now in its 24th year, the festival celebrates storytelling from both local filmmakers and international adventurers, alongside awardwinning authors, an art exhibition and an outdoor expo. Audiences can enjoy films spanning mountain culture, nature and the environment, Pure NZ sessions and the ever-popular Snow Show.

The programme offers plenty of ways to get involved – watch inspiring films, hear from guest speakers, attend book readings and author talks, and connect with fellow adventurers. Many New Zealand filmmakers will also be in attendance to introduce their films, offering a rare chance to hear the stories behind the stories.

This year’s guest speakers include French filmmaker and alpinist Sébastien Montaz-Rosset, alongside local adventurers Matheson Brown and Petrouchka Steiner-Grierson.

With something for all ages, the festival also features free family shows – perfect for young adventurers.

Supporting the next generation of storytellers remains a key focus, with the Adventure Film School and DOCTalks sessions helping to grow New Zealand’s filmmaking community. Tickets are on sale now, with a full programme available at mountainfilm.nz.

MentalHunts 101 – Training Programme

MentalHunts 101 is an engaging, practical evidence based course designed specifically for New Zealand’s firearms community. This programme breaks down the stigma around mental wellbeing and firearms ownership while delivering clear, relevant education on firearms legislation, help seeking, responsibilities, and the realities behind common myths.

This course creates a safe, no-judgement environment where participants can gain confidence, increase awareness, and learn how to look after themselves and their mates, both in the field and at home.

Whether you’re a new licence holder or just someone

who lives or works with a licence holder, MentalHunts 101 will equip you with the knowledge, tools, and mindset to promote safer communities and stronger wellbeing.

This delivery represents the first pilot and the first of its kind programme in New Zealand. As such, participant feedback is incredibly valuable. Insights gathered during this pilot will directly shape the future development of the course, helping refine content, delivery, and impact. This feedback will also play a key role in supporting future funding opportunities, allowing MentalHunts 101 to be rolled out nationally and reach more communities across the country.

Gluten free cookie making for Coeliac Awareness Week

Wanaka Coeliac Kids Club is now in its fifth year.

The goals of the club are to support children and their whanau living with coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten consumption. When people with this condition eat gluten – a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye – their immune system attacks the small intestine. This damages the intestinal lining, leading to nutrient malabsorption and various symptoms like diarrhoea, fatigue, and weight loss. The only treatment is a strict glutenfree diet, which allows the intestine to heal and symptoms to subside. Untreated coeliac disease can cause long-term complications, emphasising the importance of early diagnosis.

Come join us for this year’s Coeliac Awareness Week kids club event where we will be making and decorating delicious gluten free cookies. Parents welcome to stay for a cup of tea and a chat and to help out.

Beyond the lines At the World’s Edge

Lines connect and lines divide. They create boundaries and pathways, limits and connections. When At the World’s Edge Festival returns for its sixth year this spring, some of the world’s finest chamber musicians will explore the line in all its human, artistic and natural dimensions, drawing from the lines of exceptional compositions, while performing against the lines and contours of our amazing landscapes.

The festival opens in Wānaka, which will play host to the world premiere of composer in residence Michael Norris’ AWE commission, a string trio created in dialogue with local sculptor, Ed Cruickshank. Ed and Michael will discuss this

collaboration and how it came about during a free event at Rippon Hall.

US virtuoso violist Matthew Lipman and European power couple Florian Donderer (violin) and Tanja Tetzlaff are among the international artists who’ll play alongside Aotearoa stars that include Mathias Balzat, Julia Joyce and Monique Lapins.

CRIME LINE

A MALE WAS TRESPASSED from the Bullock Bar by Police on Friday, 8 May. He had previously been asked to leave the Bullock Bar due to his level of intoxication. The male got into a verbal argument with security and attempted to punch security.

POLICE WERE CALLED to Hāwea on Friday, 8 May in response to a male threatening a female. Police attended and during the process of being arrested, the male spat a mouthful of saliva in the face of an officer. This disgusting and degrading behaviour puts Police staff at risk and understandably causes stress and angst. The male has been charged with Speaks Threateningly, Assaults Police x 2 and Resists Police. He is appearing in Court on 18 May 2026.

POLICE ARRESTED A 76-year-old male on Friday, 8 May for breaching his bail conditions. He was arrested and appeared in Queenstown on 8 May.

POLICE RECEIVED A REPORT of a burglary/petrol theft on Sunday night, 10 May, at a rural property in Hāwea. It appears that a male has driven onto the property and stolen petrol. Investigations continue.

A 19-YEAR-OLD MALE driving a vehicle on Ardmore Street, Wānaka was stopped by Police on Wednesday night, 6 May. He failed a breath screening test. He underwent evidential breath alcohol procedures producing a result of 400mcg/L. He is appearing in Queenstown District Court on 22 May 2026.

ON FRIDAY 8 MAY during school hours, a member of the public contacted Police advising they had seen a vehicle speeding excessively on Plantation Road, outside Mt Aspiring College. The informant estimated the speeds to be around 100kph. Police were unable to locate the vehicle.

ON FRIDAY, 8 May a female and her 3-year-old son were walking into New World Three Parks on a footpath in the carpark. A vehicle attempting to park, pulled into a park on one side of the footpath, failed to stop and continued to accelerate and drive over the raised footpath, narrowly missing mother and son. The incident is being investigated.

POLICE RESPONDED TO a motor vehicle accident on Cardrona Valley Road on Friday, 8 May. The vehicle was travelling north on the downhill section of the road near bridge number 6, the road was wet, raining at the time. The vehicle slid into the left-hand bank and flipped onto its roof, coming to a stop in the north bound lane. The driver managed to exit the vehicle with no injury.

POLICE RECEIVED A CALL relating to concerning driving behaviour on Friday night, 8 May 2026. Police located a vehicle on the side of the road with the headlights on full beam, the engine running, with a 22-year-old male driver in the drivers seat, who appeared disorientated and confused. The driver underwent breath alcohol procedures roadside and produced an extremely high evidential reading of 1435mcg/L. The male will be appearing in Queenstown District Court on 22 May.

POLICE ATTENDED A VEHICLE accident on Cardrona Valley Road on Saturday morning, 9 May. The north bound vehicle lost control on a right-hand corner. The vehicle crossed the centre line and collided with an embankment. The road surface was wet.

Treasured wife and soulmate of Jan*, beloved sister of Colette, Bob* and Pam (USA), a much-loved aunt and great-aunt, and a trusted friend and confidante of many.

Kate was a passionate educator; an adventurous traveller and explorer of the world; a writer; a deep and creative thinker; a child whisperer and a cake baker extraordinaire! She moved to New Zealand in 1996, and embraced life as a citizen of Aotearoa with conviction and pride. She shared her sense of fun, her joie de livre, her feisty spirit, her wisdom, and her insights with her many friends and the wider community. She will always be remembered as “Grandma Kate” by numerous lucky Wanaka tamariki.

Special thanks to friends and neighbours, Dr Pip Clearwater, the Wānaka District Nurses, the wonderful PHC nurse team and the Wānaka Hospice team for their loving care of Kate in her final weeks.

Open Letter to Our Community: Winter Pressure Is Building

I am writing to you today with a genuine sense of urgency about the pressure many families in our community are facing as winter fast approaches.

Can you imagine waking up on a freezing morning, with the inversion layer sitting heavy, and getting the kids out of bed in a house with no heating, or asking them to do their homework in a room that hasn’t had any heating for days?

For some in our community, this is not hypothetical, it is what winter looks and feels like.

This year, the situation is becoming increasingly difficult, as rising living costs, fuel prices, and everyday expenses stretch household budgets further than ever before.

More families are feeling the strain, and when the added costs of firewood, electricity, and gas are factored in, especially as winter feels early and is shaping up to be particularly challenging for those trying to keep their homes warm.

What we are hearing every day is not just about finances, it is about stress, anxiety, and real uncertainty for what winter may hold. People are already juggling work, parenting, and caring for whānau, and the pressure is steadily building.

Many of the people reaching out are part of the fabric of our community, people working in classrooms, in healthcare, in retail, and in essential local services. They are families who have always managed, who contribute every day, and who are now finding that the margin they once relied on has disappeared.

Winter can often be the point where things tip. It is rarely one big event, but the steady build-up of power bills, rent, mortgages, petrol, and food costs until something must give. And as temperatures drop and the inversion settles in, many are quietly asking the same question: “How will we keep our home warm?”

Cold homes affect far more than comfort. They impact health, wellbeing, the ability for adults to keep working, and for children to attend school ready to learn.

At Community Link, we are already seeing demand increasing significantly.

The Cold Kids campaign enables us to provide practical, immediate help such as firewood and heating support, things that make a real and immediate difference.

We are also working to bring support closer, including a pop-up Foodbank in Hāwea over the winter months.

We are now halfway into the campaign, and thanks to the incredible generosity of our community so far, we have made a strong start. However, there is still more to do, and we need to raise a further $40,000 before winter fully sets in to meet the growing need.

I am writing to ask whether you might be able to help. Whether it is donating, sharing this message, or simply looking out for others, every action contributes to a stronger, more connected community.
