Wānaka’s lakefront will once again be the setting for a special gathering on Friday, 10 July from 2.00pm, as Kāhu Youth invites the community to gather and celebrate Matariki with kapa haka, bonfires, hāngi, and live performances.
Matariki celebrates the rising of the Te Kāhui o Matariki star cluster and is guided by three key principles: remembrance – honouring those who have passed; celebration – giving thanks for the present; and looking to the future – embracing renewal and hope. It’s a time to reflect, connect and celebrate te ao Māori and the richness of Māori culture, values and traditions.
A delicious hāngi will be served from 5.00pm, with presales beginning from 2.00pm. Organisers encourage people to get in early, as last year’s hāngi sold out. Throughout the afternoon and evening, kapa haka groups will perform on the community stage, while kaumātua Darren Rewi will share live storytelling of local Māori legends.
MCs Paul Tamati, Ryan Enoka and Toby Brown will guide the audience through the meaning of Matariki and help bring the celebrations together. Rangatahi can relax and enjoy the atmosphere at the Kāhu Youth Pop-Up Youth Centre, while tamariki can take part in interactive Matariki-themed crafts and stories in the Tamariki Interactive Marquee.
Visitors will also have the chance to join Te Kākano for a weaving workshop, creating harakeke stars, while bonfires along the lakefront provide a warm gathering place throughout the event. A giant bubble show, always a favourite with tamariki, takes place at 4.40pm. The evening will also feature a community waiata, with everyone invited to join together along the lakefront at 5.30pm to sing Ko Te Whirika. Fire dancers will round out the celebrations, creating a memorable close to this special community event.

A rare musical treat - Stephen De Pledge in concert
Beethoven’s first and last pieces of music will be performed by the highly acclaimed pianist Stephen De Pledge on Wednesday, 8 July at the Aspiring Village. The programme includes two characterful pieces of Liszt and a quirky new work from London-based New Zealand composer Jeroen Speak.
Since winning the Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s Gold Medal in his final year of study in London, Stephen has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician. Along with concerto performances he has broadcast for BBC radio and television and made more than 20 commercial recordings.
Having performed in many international festivals including New York, London and Edinburgh, Stephen has often performed premieres of new works. Having commissioned many composers in
Talk to explore homes with longevity in mind
New Zealand and abroad he has amassed a large body of new work for piano solo and ensembles. In addition to his performing career Stephen is Head of Piano at the University of Auckland.
This relaxed afternoon concert in the comfort of the Gordon Lounge also offers you the opportunity to speak with the artist during refreshments following the concert.

Could the home you're building today still stand in 2126? What if the decisions we make when building a home today could shape not just the next 30 years, but the next 100? That's the question at the heart of Wao's upcoming Better Building Banter: Beyond the Build, taking place on Tuesday, 7 July at Ground Up Brewing in Wānaka. The free community event marks the release of the
final module in Wao's This Is How We Build training series and invites homeowners, builders, designers and renovators to think differently about what it means to build well.
With renovation costs rising and building waste becoming one of New Zealand's fastest-growing waste streams, the conversation will explore how we can create homes that are healthier, more
adaptable and built to last for generations.
Rather than seeing buildings as short-term products, the evening asks what might change if we designed and built with longevity, repairability and future generations in mind.
The series has attracted interest from well beyond the Southern Lakes, with more than 70 people from across New Zealand joining the recent Integrated Design webinar - evidence that better building conversations are resonating nationally as communities look for smarter, more resilient ways to live.
The event will feature practical insights, local perspectives and plenty of opportunity for discussion over a drink at Ground Up Brewing.

Wanaka Presbyterian Church is holding a quiz night to raise money for people in Vanuatu.
The money raised will help cover accommodation and food costs which will go directly to Talua Theological College, with volunteers paying for their own flights.
Based at Talua Theological College on the island of Santo for ten days, the volunteers will be taking part in teaching English classes, interactions in the local hospital and doing maintenance on buildings.
Being rural, Vanauatu (Talua) has many more projects planned than they have skilled people to action them. When many skilled hands are absent on their island, it is a great
encouragement to get people from overseas to come and help, and even the smallest contribution is valued by all.
Melanesians value partnership that builds relationships. Talua invites teams to fellowship with them – to meet, chat, observe, worship, pray and serve together as they bring the Christian message to the people of Vanuatu.
If you enjoy testing your knowledge and having fun at the same time, join us for our quiz night fundraiser.
Teams of 7 are $15 each. Phone 03 443 7887 to book.

Te Kura o Tititea Mount Aspiring College (MAC) has become the first South Island school to adopt the Rotary Reading Enrichment Programme (REP), with 12 volunteer tutors working weekly with a group of Year 7 students.
The Rotary Club of Wānaka launched the one-onone literacy initiative at the college this term, pairing community volunteers with students for an hour every Tuesday and Thursday morning.
"It's a real winner for both the volunteers and the students," Rotary Club of Wānaka programme coordinator Noelene Pullar said.
"The students enjoy the supportive environment and the one-on-one time with a caring tutor, and the tutors love working with young people where the age difference is notable."
MAC staff welcomed the Rotary Club's involvement and held a training session for tutors before the programme began - something volunteers said they found reassuring, given that few come from an education background. An independent evaluation of the programme, completed in February 2020, found that students who participated showed strong gains in reading achievement and NCEA results, with all students in one 2015 cohort going on to achieve NCEA Level 1, and 22 of 23 achieving Level 2.
The format is designed to be straightforward for volunteers, while remaining engaging for students.
Anyone interested in becoming a REP volunteer can contact the Wānaka Rotary Club at wanakarotaryclub.org.nz or call Noelene Pullar on 027 4452 032.

Beyond the Build.
What if the home you are building today was still standing in 2126? Join us as we explore how better decisions at the beginning of a project can create homes that endure for generations. The discussion will cover durability, maintenance, renovation realities, circular thinking, and what it means to see buildings as long-term assets rather than short-term products. Building or renovating? This event not to be missed.
The future will not be defined by the challenges we face, but by how we respond to them. Join us for the launch of this years programme, as we explore the opportunities, challenges and solutions shaping the future of business, climate, artificial intelligence, energy, food systems and community wellbeing. Help us shape a future where communities and ecosystems thrive through change. Early Bird tickets released on the night.

GENERAL
CRIME LINE
POLICE WERE CALLED to a family harm event on 16 June. The offender was charged with threatening to kill and assault person in a relationship.
POLICE REMIND ANYONE who inadvertently has a mail item delivered, that is erroneously addressed or addressed to a different person, not to open it. On occasion Police receive reports of people opening and accessing other people’s mail. Under the Postal Services Act 1998, if mail has been mistakenly delivered to an address in error, all reasonable steps to get the mail to the right person should be made. Either return to sender, or arrange to have it redelivered.
POLICE HAVE AN ASSORTMENT OF LOST PROPERTY handed in. Police hold property for defined periods that align with our policies and procedures. Police do our best to return the property to owners. Currently we are in possession of a distinctive high valued mountain bike that was handed in earlier this year. If you are missing a mountain bike, please get in touch with us. Naturally, we will need to be satisfied of evidence of ownership.
FURTHER TO MY THOUGHTS around speeds in last week’s brief, again our policing team have held people accountable for high speeds across the area. 149/100 on the Luggate-Tarras Road and 136/100 are examples of poor decision making with regard to speeds.
POLICE STOPPED A VEHICLE on Ballantyne Road on 16 June after reports of poor driving behaviour. The driver was tested for alcohol however during the interaction, Police observed drug related items inside the vehicle. A warrantless search was completed and the items seized.
POLICE WERE CALLED to a car v bike on Aubrey Road on 17 June. The vehicle was travelling west on Aubrey Road, the cyclist travelling in the same direction in the cycle lane. The driver of the vehicle has passed the cyclist and turned left without seeing the cyclist who had no helmet or lights. Fortunately, no one was injured. Police urge cyclists to wear a helmet and have lights and reflective gear.
POLICE WERE CALLED to a two car Motor Vehicle Accident on Ballantyne Road on 18 June. Nil Injury.
POLICE URGE PEOPLE TRAVELLING on our network frequently to get ready by signing up to the QLDC Winter Road Reports (QLDC.govt.nz) for daily updates on road conditions and chain requirements.
UPDATED RULES REQUIRE drivers to use snow chains in winter conditions on certain roads. From winter 2026, failing to fit chains when required can result in a $750 fine enforced by Police. Drivers are responsible for knowing how to properly fit chains and should check their vehicle manual or consult a mechanic if unsure.
THE NEW ZEALAND SEARCH AND RESCUE (NZSAR) Awards were held at Parliament in Wellington last night, recognising excellence in search and rescue efforts across the country. The outstanding skill, teamwork, and dedication of the Wānaka LandSAR team were formally acknowledged at the event. Their recognition reflects the unwavering commitment of volunteers who selflessly respond to callouts, often in challenging and hazardous conditions to ensure the safety of others.
THE OPERATIONAL GOLD AWARD was awarded to the combined efforts of the wider team involved in Operation Artigau, the search for Argentine tourist Hector Gaston Artigau, who went missing in Mt Aspiring National Park last year. Despite extensive search efforts, he has not been located. Over the course of more than 20 days, five organisations and 40 Wānaka search and rescue volunteers dedicated significant personal time and effort in the search operation. This included the deployment of specialist search and rescue dogs and their handlers to support the mission. We are proud to work alongside this wonderful group of people. Thanks to Raewyn and the wider Wānaka LandSAR team, NZ Land Search and Rescue Search Dogs, Aspiring Helicopters, Wānaka Police SAR team, and the Police National Dive Squad for their exceptional work and commitment.
