Jolly Santa’s Grotto returns for its 11th year of Christmas magic!
The beloved Jolly Santa’s Grotto is back for its 11th year, bringing festive cheer and wonder for all ages at the Wānaka Community Hub, 34 McDougall Street. Run by a dedicated team of local Christmas enthusiasts - Jen Anderson, Yeverley McCarthy, AJ Spence, and Alison Jarvis - this heartwarming event has become a true community highlight.
This year’s Grotto features 18 dazzling Christmas trees, each sponsored and decorated by a local business vying for your vote in the People’s Choice Award. Last year’s winner, McKay Brothers Building, will return as the guest decorator, along with some returnees and unveiling six new creations sure to inspire.

As always, the Grotto continues to give back, proudly supporting local not-for-profit groups including Food for Love, the Wanaka Food Bank, Community Networks, and the Rescue Helicopter. Visitors can meet Santa himself during all opening times - perfect for a photo, a chat, and a sprinkle of Christmas magic.
The Mint Charitable Trust will again host a special sensory session, ensuring everyone can enjoy the experience in comfort. Entry is by koha/donation, with raffles and EFTPOS/cash options available thanks to the generosity of local businesses.

Wastebusters Sustainable Christmas Market
The Wastebusters Sustainable Christmas Market returns this Saturday, 22 November, from 9.00am to 2.00pm, bringing together local makers, great food and plenty of festive spirit.
Now in its fth year, the market has become a favourite on the Wānaka calendar. Visitors can browse stalls lled with upcycled clothing, handmade ceramics, natural skincare, jewellery, prints and plants. It is the perfect place to nd thoughtful gifts that do not cost the earth and to enjoy a relaxed morning catching up with friends.
Local artist Jodie Shellard says she loved being part of the market last year. “It’s such a lovely atmosphere and a great way to support local.
Everyone is friendly, and there’s a real sense of community throughout the day. I’m really looking forward to being part of it again this year.”
Attendees can enjoy delicious kai from the Delhi Hut food truck and sweet treats from Cat Rescue Wānaka’s bake sale. Inside the shop, there will be secondhand decorations, Christmas gifts and more to explore.
Bike parking will be available on site. The reuse and recycle drop-o lanes and on-site car park will be closed for the day, so anyone planning to donate items is kindly asked to hold onto them until the following Monday.

Community Link Launches 2025 Christmas Appeal
As the festive season approaches, the team at Community Link is calling on locals to once again, come together for this year’s Christmas Appeal because everyone can play a part in strengthening our community.
This year has been particularly tough for many across the Upper Clutha. Families are feeling the squeeze, and for some, Christmas is already looking more stressful than joyful. This year’s Christmas Appeal aims to change that, providing food parcels and financial support to those who need it most.
“Christmas should be a time of joy and hope, not stress,” says Community Link Chair Ian Maxwell. “The communities support helps ensure every child and whānau member can celebrate the season with hope.”
A local family who received a hamper last year shared with us their feeling of being supported, “I feel so humbled and grateful for the incredible Christmas hamper. It made such a difference to our Christmas. My daughter loved making a gingerbread house, and the practical things — like toothpaste and sunblock — were an enormous help.”
This Christmas, we are asking everyone who can in the community to join in; neighbours, businesses, schools, and clubs to help those who’ve had a tough year. Every act of generosity, big or small, helps make sure no one is left out of the celebration. Supported
