Presented by Wanaka Concert Society in partnership with Chamber Music NZ New Zealand pianist Tony Chen Lin returns home from his Budapest base with Hungarian cellist Balázs Dolfin for a special performance at the Lake Wānaka Centre at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 25 August. This dynamic duo presents a diverse and fascinating programme that includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Zoltán Kodály, Belá Bartók and Gao Ping Balázs Dolfin began playing at age four and quickly rose to prominence, winning national and international competitions. He studied at Hungary’s Liszt Academy and later at the University for Music and Performing Arts Munich, where he earned his Master’s with distinction.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Painting a better future for freshwater Environmental charity WAI Wānaka and internationally acclaimed artist Andrew Tischler have announced a new partnership to support freshwater protection across the Upper Clutha. Locals may know Andrew as a Wānaka resident and owner of the Tischler Gallery in Northlake. His work, inspired by the landscapes, rivers and lakes of the rohe (region), has attracted collectors from around the world. The partnership builds on a successful collaboration earlier this year, when Andrew’s painting The Source, inspired by the Rob Roy Glacier, sold for $50,000 and generated a significant donation for WAI Wānaka’s environmental programmes. As part of the partnership, Andrew is creating a series of paintings inspired by the Upper Clutha and surrounding areas, with the collection forming part of WAI Wānaka’s fundraising efforts later this year.

Albert Town community get-together Albert Town residents are invited to bring the kids and grab a free slice of pizza at The Albie on Friday, 28 August, when the Albert Town Community Association hosts a community get-together. The evening is a social one with no formal business, so it will be a chance for residents to catch up with neighbours, meet a few new faces and hear what is going on in the neighbourhood. Committee members will be on hand all evening, along with a suggestion box for ideas or feedback. The evening also introduces Dominic Flatley, ATCA's new chair, who takes over from long-time chair Heather Thorne. "It's a good time to get people back in a room together and hear what's on their minds," Flatley says. "If you've got an idea, a gripe, or just a question about what we do, come and find us." ATCA has been active in Albert Town for many years, from trapping around the lagoons to planting days and advocating for improvements to parking, parks and public spaces.

Upper Clutha Tramping Club opens Trip Leaders Workshop to the public The Upper Clutha Tramping Club is gearing up for the summer season and is holding its annual Trip Leaders Workshop next week. While traditionally aimed at current and prospective club trip leaders, the club has decided to open the session to the wider community. Recognising that many locals may find themselves leading groups of friends or family on outdoor adventures, the club wants to share its expertise in safe backcountry travel.
We are again offering oriental lily bulbs for sale in bags of four of the same variety. These have been very popular in the past. They make a magnificent display and irresistible perfume in summer, a great addition to anyone’s garden but also an ideal gift. The workshop will cover essential topics including backcountry communications, weather forecasting, and then some club procedures. Participants can chat with experienced trip leaders, pick up practical skills, and learn what club leaders consider when planning a trip. The club’s purpose includes promoting the safe enjoyment of the outdoors, and this free session reflects that commitment. Whether you’re an experienced tramper looking to lead more confidently or simply keen to learn more about venturing into the backcountry, all are welcome. Local voters for all of Central will have the opportunity to hear directly from candidates standing in the Waitaki and Southland electorates at a special Meet the Candidates event at Te Puna Mahara - Cromwell Memorial Events Centre next month. Business South in association with Elevate Central, is hosting the community evening on Tuesday, 8 September at Te Puna Mahara, beginning 7.00pm in the auditorium. With the 2026 General Election approaching, the event will provide an opportunity for residents, families, friends and neighbour to hear candidates’ views on issues affecting the region and to put their own questions directly to those seeking election. Standing in the Waitaki electorate are Miles Anderson, Sean Beamish, Damien O’Connor and Helen Tait, while Southland candidates
Bianca Beebe, Jason Herrick, Peter McDonald, Joseph Mooney and Todd Stephenson will also take part. Also appearing will be Professor Lisa Te Morenga and Tākuta Takuta Ferris. Mayor Tamah Alley will act as MC, guiding the discussion and ensuring the evening provides a balanced opportunity for candidates to share their perspectives. Questions can be submitted at the time of registration for this free event. Organisers are encouraging local residents, businesses and community members to attend this event, listen to the candidates and make the most of the opportunity to ask questions about the issues that matter to Central Otago and the wider region. POLICE RECEIVED A REPORT of mail allegedly stolen from a letterbox. A package is reported to have been taken between 5 and 6 August. Enquiries are ongoing. Police encourage anyone receiving valuable items by courier to consider requesting a signature on delivery, to help reduce the risk of theft. RETAIL CRIME: Recent legislative changes introduced through the Crimes Amendment Act 2026 provide for stronger penalties for theft offending. The amendments increased the monetary threshold for more serious theft offences and revised the associated penalties. Under the amended provisions, theft involving property valued at more than $2,000 carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment, while theft of property valued at $2,000 or less carries a maximum penalty of one year’s imprisonment. These changes support Police’s stronger enforcement response to retail and property crime. POLICE WORK IN PARTNERSHIP with agencies including Immigration New Zealand to hold retail crime offenders accountable and reduce harm within our communities. Where overseas visitors engage in criminal offending, Police may provide relevant information to Immigration New Zealand. This reinforces the message that criminal behaviour can have significant consequences beyond the immediate criminal justice process and serves as a deterrent to those considering offending while visiting New Zealand. ON 5 AUGUST, A 30-YEAR-OLD WOMAN was issued with a Road Safety Directive after being found driving while unlicensed. POLICE STOPPED A 21-YEAR-OLD woman on Ballantyne Road at approximately 10.30pm on 5 August. She underwent evidential breath alcohol testing and returned a result of 741 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. She was issued with a Road Safety Directive, is scheduled to appear in Court on a charge of excess breath alcohol. A 34-YEAR-OLD WOMAN was stopped on Golf Course Road, Wānaka at approximately 9.19pm on 5 August. Evidential breath alcohol procedures were undertaken, as a result she was issued with a Road Safety Directive. AT APPROXIMATELY 11.51PM ON 7 AUGUST, Police stopped a 73-year-old man on Ardmore Street. He underwent evidential breath alcohol testing and returned a result of 537 mcg/L. He was issued with a Road Safety Directive. He is scheduled to appear in Court on a charge of excess breath alcohol.

One of the highlights of the past month has been the success of our Community Cooking Group, which continues to bring people together through food, learning and connection. While participants gain practical cooking skills and affordable meal ideas, the real magic often happens around the table, where conversations are shared, friendships are formed and confidence grows.
Building connections was also the focus of our first Welcoming Day, delivered in partnership with Queenstown Lakes Libraries and QLDC. The event was designed to bring together people who are new to the region with local organisations, clubs and services, helping create the connections that can turn a place to live into a place to belong. The room was buzzing throughout the afternoon, with plenty of conversations, new connections and opportunities to discover what our community has to offer. A free barbecue and the ever-popular Mr Whippy, generously supported by local donor Pip Rudhall Hyett, helped create a welcoming atmosphere. The overwhelmingly positive feedback has us excited about making Welcoming Day a regular event. As winter continues, we’re also seeing significant demand through our Cold Kids programme. By the end of July, we had already helped the same number of families with heating bills and firewood costs as we did during the entire winter period last year. Rising heating costs and colder nights are creating real pressure for many households, but the response from community organisations, businesses and individual donors has been remarkable. Their generosity is helping ensure local families can stay warm through the colder months.
July also saw the highest number of food parcels distributed in Community Link’s history, with our Hāwea Foodbank Pop-Up now accounting for around 20% of all food parcels provided. Our Wellbeing Connection service, helping people navigate challenges and connect with appropriate support, assisted 93 people during the month, including 31 people accessing the service for the first time.
Connection remains at the heart of many Community Link activities. Next week marks the final Wāna Soup gathering for the season, wrapping up another successful winter of bringing people together. We’ve been delighted by the response to our Pet Therapy programme, with more than 20 new volunteers and their wonderful dogs stepping forward. Interest from schools, retirement villages, libraries and other organisations has been so strong that we’re now exploring how we can expand the programme to meet growing demand. Noho ora mai
