FROM MOUNTAINS TO MOVIES NZ MOUNTAIN FILM

The NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival returns to Wānaka from Friday, 19 June until Tuesday, 23 June, bringing five days of extraordinary storytelling, adventure and inspiration to the Lake Wānaka Centre.

The festival will transform Wānaka into a hub for mountain culture, with award-winning films, guest speakers, filmmakers, authors and adventurers sharing stories from some of the world’s wildest places – and our own backyard.

This year’s programme features 63 films selected from 266 international entries, including 18 NZ-made productions and an impressive 17 world premieres. Many of the films will screen for the first time in Wānaka, with filmmakers attending to introduce their work and share the stories behind the camera.

For those who love homegrown storytelling, Pure NZ Tahi and Pure NZ Rua sessions on Saturday and Sunday afternoons offer a chance to see some of the country’s best new adventure films. From Fiordland expeditions to alpine crossings, these sessions regularly sell out. Guest speakers are another festival highlight.

Headlining this year’s programme is award-winning

Community event dishwashing facilities available for all

The Upper Clutha A&P Society is encouraging other community groups and event organisers to make use of new commercial dishwashing facilities installed at the Wānaka Showgrounds, following a successful debut at the 2026 Wānaka A&P Show. The purpose-built facility, located within the Wānaka A&P Show Pavilion, was introduced to

help move away from single-use cups, plates and cutlery in favour of reusable items. The initiative played a significant role in helping the Show achieve a 63% waste diversion rate from landfill this year, despite record attendance numbers.

Event manager Maria Ottley said the new facility

demonstrated how practical infrastructure can make a real difference to reducing waste at large events.

“We’re incredibly proud of what’s been achieved this year. The dishwashing station has already proven its value during the Show, and now we’d love to see it benefiting other community events across the Upper Clutha as well.”

The project was supported through investment from the Show, alongside funding assistance from Queenstown Lakes District Council, Central Lakes Trust and Otago Community Trust.

Community groups, clubs and event organisers interested in using the dishwashing facilities free of charge are invited to get in touch with the Society to discuss availability and how the facilities can support low-waste events in the region. eventmanager@wanakaap.co.nz

Community Link volunteer honoured with community award

What was meant to be a routine Community Link update on Radio Wānaka's Breakfast Show with Jack Van Der Heyden turned into a memorable surprise this week when volunteer David Gibbs was named the winner of the 2026 Aspiring Law Community Champions Award.

For the past several years, David has volunteered around 20 hours each week supporting Community Link Upper Clutha. His work has focused on increasing awareness of the organisation's services, strengthening community engagement, and developing impact reporting that has helped secure additional funding and support.

Community Link General Manager Kate Murray, who nominated David for the award, said his contribution to the organisation and wider community has been invaluable.

"Community awareness of services and support is

vital to our community's wellbeing and through his time, skills and energy we have lifted our profile to those in need," she said.

"I could go on forever about the difference he has made in our community. It is largely unseen, however felt far and wide."

The Aspiring Law Community Champions Award recognises individuals who make a meaningful difference in the Upper Clutha through volunteer work, leadership, and community service.

David's reaction on air reflected the humility that those who nominated him say defines his approach to volunteering, with the award serving as recognition for countless hours dedicated to helping others across the Upper Clutha.

Rowing club call for coaches and athletes

There is no denying that the training ground for Wanaka Rowers is inspiring. From the modern watersports facility in Roys Bay, training takes crews clockwise around Ruby Island or further out to The Point. 6.00am rows, when water is often

calmest, offer starry skies, silhouetted ridgelines and vibrant sunrises that are good for the soul. And then of course rowing is widely considered one of the best full-body workouts you can

Creating a supportive community for survivors

do, engaging over 80% of the body’s muscles, including legs, core, back and arms, whilst delivering a highly efficient mix of cardiovascular conditioning and strength training which remains low impact on joints. With a strong Masters contingent who always welcome newcomers, the Junior crews need numbers now to build on success and allow more crewing options. With the Upper Clutha growing, the club is gearing up programmes to attract more juniors to this sport that offers so much in terms of friendship, fun, commitment, fitness, skill, nutritional awareness, self management, motivation and pathways to excellence. It can provide multi-sporters from other clubs, renowned fitness training in their off season to get them match fit for kick-off.

Adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse living in the Upper Clutha area are warmly invited to attend Marilyn’s weekly support meetings, offering a safe and supportive space for connection and understanding.

As proud victim survivors we have the heart and many of the skills to support one another in a space where we can celebrate our strengths, successes, and courage. Given that approximately one in four children are victims of sexual abuse, it is hoped that Marilyn’s can create conversation, recognising our value in the community as survivors, towards one day developing into a peer led community space where we can support all people who have experienced sexual abuse, and our supporters, friends and families.

Some survivors don’t feel the need for wellbeing support, while some of us do, so thank you for welcoming Marilyn’s into Wānaka’s healing space.

CRIME LINE

POLICE HAVE BEEN KEPT BUSY WITH SHOPLIFTERS. Retail crime is a priority for Police, anyone contemplating shoplifting, be warned that all shoplifting in Wānaka will be investigated, offenders will be located and be held to account. We see a strikingly similar pattern with repeat offenders targeting the same retailer. Police link the offending with the helpful theft reports sent to us from retailers. This week alone the team arrested and charged two repeat offenders.

BETWEEN 10 MAY AND 1 JUNE a 26 year old female has gone to New World, Dunmore Street and stolen various items. She has been charged with 4 separate counts of shoplifting and will appear in Queenstown District Court on 26 June.

BETWEEN 28 APRIL AND 27 MAY a 73 year old female went to New World Three Parks and stole various items. She has been charged with 8 separate counts of shoplifting. She will be appearing in Queenstown District Court on 26 June.

SCAMS AND FRAUD RELATED OFFENDING is ongoing with scams often reported to Police. Scams are increasingly varied and sophisticated. Any unexpected contact, whether by phone, mail, email, online, in person, or via social media could be a scam. Although offenders try hard to seem trustworthy, staying alert and recognising warning signs will help you identify and respond to potential scams.

THE FOLLOWING WEBSITES are useful to raise awareness and educate people. Types of scams | Consumer Protection; Scams | New Zealand Government; Understanding and Avoiding Scams l Avoid Scams and Stay Safe | Netsafe.

ON WEDNESDAY 4 JUNE, a 50-year-old male was arrested and charged with assault person with a blunt instrument, speaks threateningly and threatens to kill. It is alleged that the male threatened and assaulted another male at a property in Luggate. Police opposed his bail which amounted to the male being remanded in custody. He will be appearing on 15 June in Queenstown District Court.

WITH INCLEMENT WEATHER ‘due’ in the winter months, Police remind people about the inherent risks and harm caused on our roads in our alpine environment. Police urge people travelling on our roaring network to get ready for winter by signing up to the QLDC Winter Road Reports for daily updates on road conditions and chain requirements. Sign up and receive their 2026 road report from crews summarising conditions across the district.

SNOW CHAINS - Updated rules require drivers to use snow chains in winter conditions on certain roads. From winter 2026, failing to fit chains when required can result in a $750 fine enforced by Police. Drivers are responsible for knowing how to properly fit chains. Carry chains all winter and know when and how to fit them. Especially if you’re driving over the Crown Range Road - you will need them.

BE AWARE OF ICE, black ice and freezing fog. Freezing fog is expected in the coming months. It occurs when fog freezes onto surfaces in sub-zero temperatures, creating hazards like icy roads and black ice. Drivers should be especially cautious in misty, freezing conditions.

WATCH OUT FOR BRIDGES which often maintain black ice longer. Likewise, on rural roads, ice can last longer as typically they have less traffic to wear away the ice. Drive to the conditions.

POLICE NON-EMERGENCY | New Zealand Police Non-Emergency. Use the online report options to make a non-emergency report, or you can call us on 105 (Ten-Five) 24/7. If it’s happening now, or someone’s in danger, call 111 (Triple-One).

Open Letter to Our Community: Thank You, and the Work Ahead

As winter settles in and the nights are colder, we want to begin with a simple and heartfelt thank you.

To everyone who has donated, shared our message, checked in on a neighbour, or quietly supported someone needing a hand, your care and generosity are making a real difference.

The shortest day is not far away and as the sun drops each day, the temperature follows quickly. While the inversion may have lifted for now, we know it can return at any time, bringing those long stretches of freezing, still days that make heating homes even more difficult.

With this shift, we are seeing a significant increase in the number of families reaching out for support.

These are our neighbours, colleagues, parents at school, people working across our local businesses, services, and community spaces. Many are doing everything they can to keep up, but with one in three families now living week to week, there is very little room to absorb rising costs or an unexpected one off event.

What we are seeing time and again is that it is rarely one major crisis that brings someone through our doors. More often, it is a series of small pressures that slowly build, a higher power bill, an unexpected cost, reduced hours at work, increasing rent or groceries until, eventually, something has to give.

We recently spoke with a local parent who works and has always managed to provide for their family. This winter, however, the rising cost of heating, alongside everyday expenses, meant they were making impossible choices, cutting back wherever they could, yet still falling short. Reaching out for help was not easy, but it meant their children could have a warm home again. This story is not unique. It reflects what we are seeing more and more across our community.

Through the Cold Kids campaign, we are providing practical, immediate support such as firewood and heating assistance, helping households stay warm through the coldest months.

Thanks to the generosity shown so far, we have made a strong start. But the reality is, demand is growing quickly. We are currently $40,000 short of what we expect to need to meet the level of support required this winter.

No child should be in a cold home over winter. It’s a simple statement, but an important one. Warmth is not a luxury, it is a basic foundation for health, wellbeing, and the ability for children to learn and thrive.

If you are in a position to help, whether by donating, sharing this message, or looking out for those around you, it all matters. Every contribution helps to strengthens this community. If you would like to donate, please visit the “Support Us” page on the Community Link Website and select Cold Kids, or use the QR code.

And if you are reading this and recognising your own situation, please know that support is here, without judgement. Reaching out is a brave step many are taking, and it is one that reflects strength. We all have a role to play in looking after one another.

Together, we can make sure no one is left out in the cold this winter.

Thank you,

MY OPEN HOMES
