As we wrap up another busy year, we want to send a big thank you to everyone all who have supported us – our advertisers, our readers and the wider community. You are the reason this publication continues to be such an important part of local life.

It has been a year of change for us. After over 20 publication at heart. What began back in 1978 as a single page Community Diary has grown right alongside Wanaka. We’re proud of the role it continues to play in keeping our community connected and informed, and we’re excited for the next chapter and all that is to come. Have a brilliant Christmas and an even better New Year. Enjoy the holidays and make the most

MY COMMUNITY NEWS

Two sisters, one small town, one big dream

Wanaka has always been a place where big dreams grow from small beginnings and for local alpine ski racers Mathilda and Isabel Watterson, that dream now leads all the way to the Alpine World Junior Championships in Norway.

Between them, the girls have earned titles that put Wanaka firmly on the international map: 2025 NZ Overall Alpine Champion, 2025 NZ Slalom Champion, and 2025 U21 Slovenian GS Champion, along with multiple podiums across Europe. Behind every result are early mornings, long winters, and a high level of commitment.

What many don’t realise is that alpine racing in New Zealand receives no financial support from the national federation. Every training block, race entry, pair of skis, and international flight is privately funded. For a small local family, the reality is as tough as the sport itself.

Despite their demanding schedule, the girls always give back: mentoring younger racers, helping at local events, giving talks, and supporting environmental initiatives. They even run a small business, 'Tildy & Iz' handmade neck warmers, which has helped them raise funds. They’re now hoping a few local shops may come on board to stock them.

That’s why they’ve launched their 'Give a Little' community fundraiser. They’ve worked, volunteered,

and contributed wherever possible, but if we want to keep our national champions out there competing, community support becomes essential.

If you’re able, even a small contribution helps keep them representing Wanaka and New Zealand on the world stage.

Scan. Support. Share. Let’s keep our girls racing.

Together for freshwater: Learn, act, and make a difference

WAI Wānaka believes when these lakes and rivers are healthy, so are we. They have just released their 2025 Impact Report, which tells a powerful story of what they have achieved - together with this communityand why your support matters more than ever.

This year, the community stepped up in incredible ways with WAI:

• 1,918 people engaged through events and citizen science

• 4,000 native plants planted to restore biodiversity

• 1,923 volunteer hours protecting waterways

• Education programmes reaching 1,988 students, inspiring future generations

• 95 organisations/groups partnered with WAI

Behind these numbers are stories of real

collaboration – farmers restoring riparian zones, schools adopting drains, volunteers monitoring water health. Yet, the challenge is growing.

WAI Wānaka CEO, Cat Dillon says “the funding landscape has changed significantly. Pressure and threats to freshwater are increasing, and the health of the alpine lakes sits at a crossroads that we can’t ignore.”

Read their 2025 Impact Report at waiwanaka.nz/ about/impact. Then, join them in preserving and protecting these precious waters for generations to come.

Your donation will help WAI accelerate community action, deepen partnerships, and safeguard the Upper Clutha’s lakes and rivers.

Food for Love community support update

Food For Love is delighted to share that its recent bake sale at New World Wanaka raised over $3,800 in just two hours. With queues forming before the tables were even set, it was certainly one for the books. A huge thank you goes to the volunteers and local businesses who baked, donated preserves and bottled fruit, purchased treats, and helped coordinate the day. Your support makes a meaningful difference to locals when they need it most.

Food For Love is now preparing for a well-earned break. Food For Love’s final day of meal deliveries is Thursday, 18 December, with nominations reopening on Monday, 11 January. Deliveries will start again week commencing Monday, 19 January.

Community Link, which runs the local Foodbank, closes from 12.00pm, on Wednesday, 24 December. The Foodbank will reopen on Tuesday, 6 January. After this date, a small number of Food For Love meals will be available through the Foodbank for urgent situations.

During this short pause, if you or someone you know needs food support, both local New World supermarkets offer a range of well-priced, readymade meals. Creating a Meal Train with friends, family, or neighbours is another great way to share the load, and platforms such as mealtrain.com make it easy to coordinate.

Food For Love sincerely thanks all volunteers, supporters, and the wider community for their generosity throughout the year and wishes everyone a safe and happy festive season.

Are you a not-for-profit, community group or charity organisation? Or do you have a feel good local story you'd like to share?

‘Softly Calls The Devil’ by Chris Blake

Featuring sole-charge constable Matt Buchanan in Haast on our wild West Coast.

He's made friends among the locals, won their trust. He keeps their world safe.  And he's working in spectacular surroundings.  But then his much-loved predecessor, Gus,  is discovered beside a river with a bullet  through his head...

‘All at sea’ by Neil Frazer

Two artist friends, the painter Neil Frazer  and photographer Craig Potton, have spent  many decades exploring and creating images  of New Zealand's remote and rugged coastlines.  In All at Sea they combine both their paintings  and photographs to present haunting and  beautiful work, inspired by the ocean's power  and wild sublimity.

‘A Guardian and A Thief’ by Megha Majumdar

In a near-future Kolkata beset by flooding and  famine, Ma, Mishti, and Dadu are leaving the city behind to join Ma's husband in Michigan. After procuring long-awaited visas, they  prepare for their flight to America. However, they discover that Ma's purse, with the  treasured immigration documents within, has  been stolen...

‘Feathers of Aotearoa’ by Niels Meyer-Westfeld

In this book nature artist Niels Meyer-Westfeld  explores the feathers of Aotearoa's native birds,  from the long wing feathers of an albatross that  enable it to soar endlessly over the oceans, to the tiny, insulating feathers of a penguin. This  exquisitely illustrated book combines artwork  with compelling insights.
