Food for Love celebrates ten years with charity gala Wānaka charitable organisation Food for Love is thrilled to announce its 2026 Charity Gala & Auction, marking a monumental 10 years of operating and supporting the Upper Clutha community. This milestone anniversary follows the immense success of the inaugural 2025 Gala, which raised over $50,000 to fund nutritious, home-cooked meals. The 2026 event promises to be a true decade-of-care celebration, reaching out to involve all areas of the community. New Zealand culinary icon Simon Gault will feature as the evening's special guest speaker. A dedicated backbone of volunteers makes this work possible. Over the past decade, the charity has grown from a small operation to a vital support network, expanding its team to nearly 180 active volunteers who collectively hit an extraordinary milestone of producing and delivering over 10,000 home-cooked meals in the last year. "Operating for 10 years is an achievement worthy of massive celebration, and it's all thanks to the incredible heart of our volunteers," says Portia
Campbell, Board Chair of Food for Love. "The demand for our services continues to grow, and this gala is vital to ensure no one faces difficult times alone." The Food for Love 2026 Gala will take place on Thursday, 15 October at the Lake Wānaka Centre. Tickets are available now via Humanitix.

Busy, not broken: couples workshop returns to Wānaka
Community Link is bringing back its Couples Workshop, offering local couples the opportunity to strengthen their relationship, improve communication, and reconnect amid the pressures of everyday life.
Fishing is more than a hobby for New Zealanders, it is rooted in the Kiwi identity and our national heritage. It connects generations, shapes communities and allows you to enjoy nature and submerse yourself in the pursuit of the quarry. UCAC was originally formed in the late 1940s as the Wanaka Rod and Gun Club. Its primary purpose is to bring together a social community of like minded people to answer the question "Is angling a hobby, obsession or religion?" The club runs an active calendar of various club trips and social occasions and takes a vested interest in the protection of the environment, aquatic habitats and water, by
providing support where deemed necessary. One of the club's upcoming events is the bi-annual 'Introduction to Fly-Fishing Course.' The course targets the beginner to novice fly-fisherman and is run over 3 consecutive Sunday afternoons in October. The objective of the course is to send participants away with a good foundation of knowledge, so they can confidently dip their toes into the finer art of fly-fishing. Registration is limited and closes Friday, September 25.
The six-week programme returns following positive feedback from last year's participants and comes at a time when demand for counselling and relationship support continues to grow. Community Development Coordinator Kenzie Mastrodarni says many couples don't see themselves as having relationship problems, but can find themselves drifting into survival mode as work, family commitments and financial pressures take priority. "Between work, family commitments, and the realities of the Wānaka cost of living, many couples find themselves in survival mode without even realising it.
Often there isn't a major problem in the relationship. Life has simply become so busy that connection takes a back seat," she says. One previous participant admitted they were reluctant to attend. "We nearly didn't come because we didn't think it was for us. We weren't in crisis. Life was just busy. Between work, kids, and the Wānaka cost of living, we'd slipped into survival mode and were mostly just getting through the week. The workshop helped us reconnect and feel more like a team again." The cost is $300 per couple, with the programme subsidised by Community Link. Community Link is committed to making the workshop accessible. If cost is a barrier, Please get in touch on 03 443 7799 to discuss support options. No one should miss out because of financial circumstances. Submitted by Community Link Upper Clutha

CRIME LINE
Cr i m e L i ne brought to you by N e w Wo r l d T hr ee Pa r ks
POLICE ARE APPEALING FOR INFORMATION following the theft of a drone and accessories from Cardrona Alpine Resort on 1 September. The drone was stored in a hard protective carry case and was reported stolen from the resort’s courtyard area. This is an example of an opportunistic offender who may have taken advantage of an unattended bag and removed it along with its contents. Police remind members of the public to take extra care with their personal property and avoid leaving valuable items unattended, even for short periods. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the drone is asked to contact Police on 105 quoting file number 260904/8970. ON THE EVENING OF 3 SEPTEMBER, Police were called to a Luggate address following reports of a missing 19-year-old female. Given the time of day, circumstances and deteriorating weather conditions, Police activated a search operation involving Wānaka LandSAR volunteers. The female was located several hours later safe and well. POLICE RESPONDED TO AN INCIDENT at the Hampshire Wānaka View Campground on 4 September. Residents in the area may have noticed a significant presence of emergency services providing urgent medical assistance. Police would like to thank those who assisted emergency services with their enquiries. RETAIL CRIME REMAINS A FOCUS for Police in Wānaka. On 5 September, Police arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with a series of alleged shoplifting incidents at New World Wānaka. The man has been charged with three counts of shoplifting and is due to appear in the Queenstown District Court. POLICE STOPPED A 20-YEAR-OLD FEMALE driver on Ardmore Street on 2 September. The driver underwent a breath screening test, which returned a result of 341 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. She was issued with an infringement notice. POLICE ARE CONTINUING TO RECEIVE REPORTS of vehicles being damaged in minor collisions where the driver has left the scene without making reasonable efforts to contact the owner or leave their details. If you collide with a parked vehicle and the owner is not present, you should stop, assess any damage, and make reasonable attempts to locate the owner. If this is not possible, you should leave your contact details in a secure and visible location on the vehicle, including your vehicle registration. Taking photographs of the damage and the scene is also recommended for insurance purposes. Police remind motorists that if the owner cannot be located or details cannot be exchanged directly, the incident should be reported to Police via 105. Failing to do so can create unnecessary inconvenience and costs for damaged vehicle owner. A moment of honesty and responsibility can prevent significant frustration for others. Police encourage all drivers to take accountability for their actions, regardless of how minor it may appear. POLICE WERE ALERTED TO A MISSING SNOWBOARDER at Coronet Peak on the evening of 6 September, after he failed to return from a ski field run. A significant search operation was initiated involving Police, LandSAR volunteers, ski patrol staff, search dogs, and helicopter resources. The search was complicated by challenging conditions, including darkness, low cloud, and poor weather. Enquiries established that the snowboarder had travelled beyond the ski field boundary and become stranded in back-country terrain. He spent the night outdoors with minimal food and equipment and was located safe and well on the morning of 7 September. Police would like to thank LandSAR volunteers, Coronet Peak Ski Patrol and our aviation partners involved in the successful outcome. This incident serves as a timely reminder for anyone venturing into snow or alpine environments to carry appropriate clothing, food, water, and emergency communication devices, and to remain within designated ski area boundaries unless properly equipped and experienced for back-country travel. Weather and terrain can change rapidly, and even experienced outdoor enthusiasts can find themselves in difficulty. NEW ZEALAND POLICE NON-EMERGENCY. Use the online report options to make a non-emergency report, or you can call us on 105 (TEN-FIVE) 24/7. If it’s happening now, or someone’s in danger, call 111 (TRIPLE-ONE).

‘Time Travel for Beginners’ by Jaclyn Moriarty
FICTION
Two Black writers are trying to find peace and belonging in a world that is riven with gun violence. One is on a global book tour after a big prize win; the other is set to give a speech at a school that has suffered a shooting. From American National Book Award winner Jason Mott.
On a bustling Sydney road lies a nondescript storefront: the Time Travel Agency - attracting those at a crossroads in their life. Three characters are curious, but how legitimate are the Agency's ventures into the past, really? However tantalizing the truth, there are real ripple effects through all of their lives.

‘Let's Go Native’ by Guy Hessell Over 80 per cent of Aotearoa's indigenous plants are found nowhere else on Earth. In Let's Go Native, Guy Hessell draws on years of hands-on experience in New Zealand gardens to provide practical, inspiring advice for incorporating native plants into gardens of every size and style.
The goldfields of nineteenth-century Aotearoa New Zealand have long been portrayed as largely male places. But women also made their way to these tough, unforgiving environments, often very early on, not only through marriage or for money, but as adventurers, entrepreneurs and, most of all, survivors. qldclibraries.govt.nz
