OPEN LETTER TO OUR COMMUNITY: Please Support Our Cold Kids Campaign

I’m reaching out today with an urgent call for help as winter approaches. For many families in our community, the season brings not only the cold but a crisis that is becoming harder to overcome each year.

Imagine a dedicated member of our community - perhaps a teacher, police officer, or a member of the Fire Brigade - someone who selflessly serves us all. Now, picture that person or a member of their wh ā nau suddenly facing an unexpected challenge, such as a medical emergency or a loss of work hours. This could reduce the family’s income to a single wage, leading to tough decisions: should they pay for food or keep the house warm? There isn't enough money for both. This scenario is not just hypothetical - it's the reality for many families, a fact highlighted in the Quality-of-Life survey, where one in three homes in Wānaka has little or no disposable income to cover unforeseen expenses.

Winter should never be a time when children go cold at home but for many families, that’s exactly what will happen. With inflation and energy costs at record highs, many of our neighbours are living with no cushion, vulnerable to a harsh winter if anything unexpected disrupts their financial situation.

The impact is especially severe for children. No child should have to face winter without warmth - yet without support, many will suffer. Cold homes make it harder for children to focus at school, more susceptible to colds and flu or enjoy the simple comfort of a warm meal at home. This is not just a matter of physical comfort; it’s a matter of health, well-being, and opportunity for the future.

This year, we estimate that Community Link will need $60,000 to meet the anticipated demand for heating assistance. Unfortunately, securing the necessary funds has never been more challenging. With government support decreasing and competition for charitable donations intensifying, we’re facing an uphill battle to raise the funds required to meet this need.

That’s where you come in. The crisis is real. We need your help to ensure that no child in our community goes cold this winter. Your donation will go directly to providing heating assistance to families who need it most. Every dollar will help us provide firewood and heating assistance to keep local families warm and safe throughout the winter.

If you have questions or would like to discuss how you can help, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly on 03 443 7799. You can also donate online through the Community Link website or via the QR code below.

On behalf of the families who will rely on your generosity, I thank you deeply. Your support helps ensure no one in our community has to face a cold winter alone.

Sincerely,

34 McDougall Street, Wānaka

A TEAM OF 11

SHARON WAS EXCELLENT TO WORK WITH AND WE WERE INSPIRED BY HER DETERMINATION TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN

We were very impressed with the speed that Sharon and Jamie were able to find potential buyers for our property, knowing that this doesn’t happen without hard work, a strong database, very good negotiating skills and a sound knowledge of the industry. Both Sharon & Jamie kept us well informed throughout the process and were not afraid to provide an honest opinion and advice on potential buyers, the market and where prospective buyers placed our property. We strongly recommend the Donnelly team for selling a property!
