WAOSUMMIT2025

The most inspiring week of climate action, learning, and local leadership is almost here. Wao Summit, running from 28 October - 2 November, brings together our local community for six days of kōrero, workshops, tours, and films designed to spark action and hope for our shared future. With this year’s bold theme, The Journey to 2125, the summit dares us to look ahead and ask: What kind of future are we building, and how can we shape it together?

Each day explores a different part of that journey and great-value day passes make it easy to choose your focus, and join in when it suits you.

The week begins on Tuesday with the opening session, The Journey to 2125 at Rippon. Wednesday is about Better Business, a full day of inspiring talks and

workshops that showcase how businesses can drive purpose and profit hand in hand. On Thursday, the Better Building Day dives into the future of sustainable design and construction, revealing how better buildings can create healthier, energy-efficient spaces for living and working. Friday’s Food Resilience Day turns our attention to the region’s food future, exploring how we can grow, share and eat more locally, guided by insights from the new Southern Lakes Food Resilience Report. The Better Communities Weekend rounds out the summit with free walking tours in Queenstown and Wānaka, community kōrero, and a special screening of the much-loved film ‘Think Like a Forest’.

“After years of incredible local action, now it’s time to imagine the systems future generations will inherit - and start building them together,” says Wao Aotearoa GGM Monique Kelly.

Session tickets and day passes are on sale now at wao.co.nz.

Wānaka Scouts Call for More Volunteer Members

The Wānaka Cubs and Scouts group continues to experience steady growth, re ecting the strong community interest in providing young people with opportunities to develop con dence, leadership, and life skills through Scouting.

To accommodate this growth and ensure the sustainability of our programmes, we are seeking additional parent helpers, leaders, and committee members.

Volunteers are essential to the success of Scouting in Wānaka. Becoming a leader or parent helper is a rewarding way to contribute to the development of local youth while gaining valuable skills and experience. Full training and ongoing support

are provided, and no prior Scouting background is required.

The group is also seeking new committee members, in particular a Secretary and Treasurer, to assist with the administration and governance of the organisation. These roles are vital to the smooth operation and future planning of the group. With more support, we can do more for our young people. Your involvement - whether on the committee, as a leader, or through occasional assistance - will make a meaningful di erence to the Wānaka Scouting community.

For further information or expressions of interest, please contact wanaka@group.scouts.nz

Inspiring the Next Generation of Multisport Athletes

February's Gallagher Insurance Challenge Wānaka Festival isn’t just for elite athletes - it also celebrates youth participation and development in sport. The event o ers a suite of exciting opportunities for young competitors to experience the thrill of multisport in a supportive, fun environment.

The Puzzling World Junior Challenge introduces younger athletes to racing, combining swimming, cycling, and running in age-appropriate distances that build con dence, teamwork, and a love for being active. For those ready to step up, the Puzzling World Intermediate Challenge features longer distances and team options.

Secondary school athletes shine in the Mitre10 Mega Secondary School Challenge, fostering teamwork,

school pride, and friendly rivalry among teams from across the region - the perfect bridge between junior and adult events.

Thanks to the generous support of sponsors and community funders, entry fees for local students are subsidised, making it easier for more young people to take part. Local students will receive a code from their school to use at checkout, while home-schooled students can contact event@challenge-wanaka.com for their code.

Together, these youth events nurture con dence, resilience, and a lifelong passion for sport - right here in Wānaka.

The event takes place at Pembroke Park, on 17 and 18 February, and entries are now open on the website: www.challenge-wanaka.com

Lakefront Tidy Up Session with WAI Wanaka

Summer is (slowly) approaching and with it, activity on the lake increases. Let’s tidy up around the lakefront to avoid rubbish heading into Lake Wānaka.

Join us next Monday, 20 October for a beach clean-up at Wānaka lakefront from 10.00am to 12.00pm.

Meet some of the local community, pick up some rubbish and share some kai, thanks to the good folk at Big Fig. It’s a great way to get involved in citizen science, while protecting Lake Wānaka. Be a part of a nationwide sustainability e ort. All rubbish collected will be sorted and recorded in the national Litter Intelligence database (by Sustainable Coastlines). Bring your friends, whānau or

workmates for a bit of fresh air and a bit of do-gooding. BYO gloves, water bottle, weather appropriate clothing and shoes.

WAI Wānaka is a not-for-pro t organisation, accelerating local action for freshwater to ensure healthy ecosystems and community wellbeing for future generations.

We believe that lasting change begins with people. More than a source of information, we support locals and visitors with the tools to play their part. We host a range of volunteer and citizen science events throughout the year, inviting folks of all ages and skill levels to get stuck in. But that’s not all we do.

The Angling Club’s Didymo Research Project

The Angling Club has organised a public meeting to hear about and discuss a Didymo Research Project headed by Tom Cawood

It will be held at the Wanaka Community Hub in the meeting room. Date: Wednesday 22nd October Time: 7pm

Speaker: Tom Cawood

Tom is originally from Wales and is a passionate trout fisherman. He’s been really saddened from seeing the effect of didymo on some of our previously pristine New Zealand rivers over the last 25 years. Instead of continuing to watch our rivers being choked by didymo, he is trying to do something about it. With some ideas and an ability to bring together experts that know much more about didymo than he does, they have come up with a plan that might help control didymo. He’s now trying to raise awareness, raise funds and gather all the best ideas to complete a research programme.

The talk:

Tom will be presenting their research group’s latest ideas drawn from medicine, plant science and pest control, on how to develop a treatment that could control the production of rock snot by didymo. The main strategy is around developing interfering RNA that could prevent didymo from making rock snot, and he’ll outline the basic plan, and also some of the challenges and hurdles ahead - both the science but also the wider issues such as potential risks and benefits, the need for wide public support, and the regulatory environment. Tom’s keen to hear any ideas, suggestions, problems and potential solutions. This is a public meeting so encourage anyone else who might be interested to come.
