OPERATION HANNAH. The first operational phase of Operation Hannah commenced this week in Queenstown and Wānaka. Operation Hannah was established following a fatal bus crash on the Ohakune Mountain Road in 2018, in which 12-year-old Hannah Francis lost her life after sustaining critical injuries. A number of other passengers were also seriously injured in the crash. A joint initiative between New Zealand Police and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and conducted annually during the winter school holiday period, the operation focuses on improving road safety around major alpine ski destinations. Police and NZTA staff undertake enforcement and compliance activities targeting passenger service vehicles and heavy vehicles travelling on routes servicing ski fields, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy, compliant with regulations, and appropriately equipped for winter driving conditions.
The aim of Operation Hannah is to reduce road trauma and prevent deaths and serious injuries on roads servicing South Island ski fields. Police encourage all road users travelling to alpine areas this winter to plan ahead, drive to the conditions, ensure their vehicles are properly equipped, and make safe choices behind the wheel.
POLICE RESPONDED TO A REPORT from a member of the Lake Hāwea community on 28 June regarding a vehicle being driven at excessive speed on Cemetery Road in the Lost Burn subdivision. Officers located the vehicle and driver shortly afterwards and issued the driver with a Road Safety Directive. Enquiries also revealed the driver was unlicensed.
ON 4 JULY, POLICE RESPONDED to a driving complaint on Cardrona Valley Road after a member of the public reported a rental vehicle being driven erratically. The vehicle was allegedly travelling at fluctuating speeds between 50km/h and 100km/h in a 100km/h zone and repeatedly crossing the centre line. Officers located and stopped the vehicle in Wānaka.
POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING REPORTS of antisocial driving in the Matukituki Valley on 4 July. Members of the public are reminded that dangerous or irresponsible driving places all road users at risk. Police have received video footage of the incident and enquiries are underway to identify those involved and determine whether any enforcement action is warranted. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Police.
POLICE STOPPED A 26-YEAR-OLD FEMALE on Upton Street, Wānaka on 4 July, and she underwent evidential breath testing, returning a result of 399 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. As the result was below the threshold for a court appearance, she was issued with an infringement notice. Police remind motorists that alcohol remains a significant contributing factor in serious and fatal crashes and encourage all drivers to make safe choices before getting behind the wheel.

Winter has certainly arrived, and we’re seeing more people reaching out for support across a range of Community Link services. In June, as an example foodbank demand increased 41% from last June and 8% higher than May.
One of the highlights of recent months has been the warm welcome our Hāwea Foodbank pop-up has received. It’s been great to see local residents embrace having support available closer to home and reinforces how important accessible community services are as our district continues to grow.
We’re also seeing growing demand for wellbeing support, with more people seeking help to navigate life’s challenges. At the same time, programmes that foster connection, including Pet Therapy, continue to expand as more schools, organisations and volunteers become involved.
Connection remains one of the strongest foundations of a healthy community, which is why we’re partnering with Queenstown Lakes Libraries and Welcoming Communities to host our first-ever Welcoming Day.
Designed for people who are new to the area, but open to everyone who might feel ‘new-ish,’ the event will be held on Wednesday, 29 July, from 3.30pm to 6.30pm at Community Link on McDougall Street, and will bring together more than 20 local organisations, clubs, services and community groups. It’s an opportunity for everyone in our community to meet people, discover what’s available in the Upper Clutha and build the connections that help turn a place to live into a place to belong. Whether you’re looking for support, keen to volunteer, interested in joining a local group, or simply want to meet new people, we’d love to see you there.
After all, one of the things that makes the Upper Clutha special is the willingness of people to welcome others, lend a hand and help build a stronger community together.
