Save the date! Wanaka & Districts Lions Club and Wanaka Search and Rescue 4WD Safari, Snow Farm along Pisa Range to Lowburn is on Saturday, 8 January 2022. With successful trips through West Wanaka, Bendigo, Hillend and Forest Range Stations, this year we plan to take you on another journey through even more diverse country from the Snow Farm along the Pisa Range to Lowburn. This is a not-to-be missed experience. Spectacular sub-alpine landscapes, stunning mountain views of the Cromwell district, including Lake Dunstan, plus the tapestry of vineyards and cherry orchards on the valley floor. The descent into Lowburn is breathtaking.

There will be a free BBQ at the Lowburn Hall courtesy of the Wanaka Lions Club. The trip is intended to be a family day out and is perfect for those who have a 4WD vehicle but never really get to take it off the road. Search and Rescue and Shotover 4WD vehicles will be placed among the convoy for added safety. Wanaka Lions have had another very busy year. Kia ora Wanaka. Not too many sleeps now until Santa arrives. I hope everyone has made it on to his nice list and not the naughty list. Whilst mentioning the naughty list, it appears that the message about “don’t drink and drive” is still not sinking in for some people. 6 people were processed for drink driving in Wanaka over the past 7 days. These 6 people either received a fine or find themselves having to explain their actions to a Judge at Court. A mention must also be made about the people who drink and drive, are stopped by Police, breath tested and return a positive test for alcohol but don’t quite breach the limit. None of the above are acceptable behaviours. If you are heading out, arrange for a safer option to safely return you to your home. Please don’t drink and drive, we are out there and you will be caught. See you at our next checkpoint. Wanaka Police attended several Family Harm incidences over the past week. The circumstances of each incident varied. Alcohol is a major contributing factor to Family Harm incidents. Please remember how your actions can affect others. Christmas can be a tough time in many ways. If you are struggling or need to talk ,please remember there are a number of services on offer at the Wanaka Community Hub on McDougall Street. With the changing of the COVID-19 Protection Framework to the Traffic Light System, the majority of us are working together and doing a great job. However, there seems to be the odd person who still wants to push the boundaries. Please respect each other and comply with the Orange Light guidelines. The Wanaka Police have been busy this week out on the streets. I’m sure many of you have seen us out and about. But, as above, many of you are not getting the message. Speeding – NO! Cellphones whilst Driving – NO! Wearing your Seatbelt – YES! If you speed, use your cellphone or don’t wear your seatbelt, we will stop you and issue you an Infringement Notice. Cyclists, you get a worthy mention too. If you do not wear a helmet or ride in the dark hours with no lights, you will also be stopped by Police and receive an Infringement Notice. There are no excuses.

This week also presented a number of occurrences between known parties who have some type of falling out and then one or both parties go and threaten the other. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wanaka Swim Club to host top Olympic Swim Coach in January under Thomas at North Shore, for education and mentoring and he will be assisting at the week-long stroke clinics run by the Wanaka Swim Club beginning on 10 January.

dominated New Zealand swimming. At Junior, Age Group and Open championships the Club has consistently won the National Points Championships.

In the 15 years Thomas has been involved in New Zealand swimming, he has been an Olympic coach at three Games; Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016. He has coached at three World Championships; Montreal 2005, Melbourne 2007 and Rome 2009.

By any standard, his contribution to New Zealand swimming both nationally and internationally has been huge. We can’t wait to host him here in Wanaka whilst also extending huge thanks to Justin Carnie of CDL Building, who has generously sponsored Thomas’ visit to Wanaka.

Wanaka Swim Club is hugely excited to announce that the Club will be hosting former Olympic coach Thomas Ansorg in January.

Ansorg was the Commonwealth Games coach in Melbourne 2006. He has been the personal coach of 15 New Zealand Olympic Games swimmers.

Locals helping prepare Wanaka community for influx of COVID As we welcome visitors to our small town this summer, it’s inevitable COVID-19 will make its way here too. We’ve had time to prepare for this with the vaccine rollout, which has been very successful in the Upper Clutha. However, several local health practitioners felt there was more they could be doing to help prepare our isolated community prepare for COVID-19; and so, Wanaka Health Bridge was created. Founder Kaz von Heraud-Parker who is a nutritionist, naturopath and herbalist, had an idea for a hub of information and guidelines on how to reduce your viral load and what support you can give your body to help recover from the virus. Contributions flowed in from experts in various fields, including a GP, pharmacists, a chiropractor, nutritionists

and a Yoga/Pilates teacher. Each individual contributing content to the Wanaka Health Bridge website in their own time, free of charge. “We now have this wonderful resource which is free to anyone. We had Wanaka in mind, but it’s accidentally gone global and has already been translated into Chinese, Slouvakian and Japanese,” Ms von HeraudParker said. “Over 30,000 hits to the website in less than two weeks plus the protocol A4 Flyer (see colour section) which has been shared widely and printed outside of our website. Providing much needed funds for Mental Health support has been important to the team at The Fit Collective and this year was no different. The last few weeks has seen over $4500 raised for Movember by gym members Shaun McCarroll and Warren Alcock. Shaun completed 12 hours on a windtrainer bike and Warren smashed 1000 pull ups in 6 hours. This weekend saw the Alpha Challenge Event take place in Dublin Bay with money being raised for the Community Networks Mental Health Support fund. The focus of this obstacle event was bringing people together to support each other, accomplish challenges and simply just have fun.
