THE WAO FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS THIS OCTOBER Bringing extraordinary stories from around the world to Wānaka The Wao Film Festival returns to Cinema Paradiso this October, bringing extraordinary stories from around the world to Wānaka. From regenerative farming and ancient forests to the power of young people to shape the future, the Wao Film Festival offers seven nights of thought-provoking cinema from 19–25 October. Presented as a warm-up to Wao Summit 2026, the festival features seven highly acclaimed films, exploring some of the biggest challenges and opportunities facing our communities and planet. The programme includes Rachel’s Farm, following Australian filmmaker Rachel Ward’s personal journey into regenerative
agriculture; The Giants, the remarkable story of environmentalist Bob Brown and his fight to protect ancient forests; and Future Council, an inspiring adventure following eight young people as they challenge global business leaders to listen to the next generation. Other highlights include Wilding, returning after a sell-out Wānaka screening, and Orwell: 2+2=5, exploring truth, propaganda and democracy. The festival leads into Wao Summit 2026, 27–31 October, bringing our community together under the theme Resilience in Action. Explore the full programme at wao.co.nz and book tickets directly through Cinema Paradiso. Submitted by the Wao Aotearoa

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wheels at Wānaka Community Grants open for 2027 Community groups, charities, sporting clubs, organisations and individuals across the Upper Clutha are invited to apply for financial support, continuing the legacy created by the hugely successful Wheels at Wānaka events.
Groups with a project needing a boost, or those who know of a local family or individual facing difficult circumstances, are encouraged to apply.
Last year, the Trust distributed more than $200,000 across the community, supporting 23 vehicle and machinery clubs, eight local clubs providing volunteer services, and 38 community groups and organisations. Funding supported a wide range of causes, including youth development, health services, sport, environmental initiatives, community support and the preservation of vintage vehicles and machinery. The Wheels at Wānaka Charitable Trust is once again giving back to the community, with applications now open for its 2027 Community Grants.
Applications close Saturday, 31 October 2026, with successful recipients announced on 1 December 2026. To learn more about the 2027 Community Grants and submit an application, visit: wheelsatwanaka.co.nz. Funds raised through the successful event are once again being distributed back into the local community through the Wheels at Wānaka Charitable Trust’s 2027 Community Grants. Pictured: Crowds at the final Wheels at Wānaka event in 2025.
While the biennial Wheels at Wānaka event has come to an end, the Charitable Trust remains committed to ensuring its success continues to benefit the region.

Table for Tomorrow: Celebrating 10 years of WAI Wānaka WAI Wānaka is inviting the Upper Clutha community to come together for Table for Tomorrow, a special fundraising long lunch celebrating 10 years of community action for freshwater. Held at Edgewater on Friday, 13 November, the event will bring together local businesses, community leaders, changemakers and freshwater supporters for an afternoon of exceptional food, meaningful connection and inspiring conversation. Over the past decade, WAI Wānaka has worked alongside schools, volunteers, scientists, landowners and community groups to better understand and protect the freshwater environments that make this rohe (region) so special. Table for Tomorrow is an opportunity to celebrate those achievements while helping support the organisation’s future work in freshwater science, education, environmental monitoring and community engagement. Guests will enjoy a banquet lunch overlooking Lake Wānaka, hear from renowned entrepreneur, innovator and storyteller Sir Ian Taylor, and take part in live and silent auctions featuring a range of
exclusive experiences, products and prizes. The event will also showcase works by internationally acclaimed artist Andrew Tischler, whose artwork reflects the beauty and significance of the landscapes and waterways that inspire his work. Whether you’re a long-time supporter or simply passionate about the future of local lakes and rivers, we’d love you to join us. Submitted by Danielle McNaughton

Get involved in Hāwea’s future at Annual General Meeting
Get summer-ready at the Wastebusters Summer Fair
The Hāwea community is one of the fastest growing communities in the Upper Clutha region and with that comes multiple challenges for the Hāwea Community Association.
Wastebusters’ annual Summer Fair is back this Saturday, 17 October from 9.00am - 5.00pm, with secondhand finds ready for another Wānaka adventure.
First and foremost is how do we best represent the interests of our diverse community and ensure projects we are involved in deliver what our residents really want. Do we support or oppose intensification? Do we fund skate board ramps and basketball half-courts or pétanque and adult ageing equipment? What is the role of the Guardians of Lake Hāwea and how do we want to see our lake preserved for future generations and the enjoyment of all.
involved in things that matter for them and their families? The Hāwea Community Association is a membership association open to all members of our community with an annual subscription of $20 per household. We need your involvement so that we can continue to work to make Hāwea the best place to live. The first step is to attend the Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 22 October, 5.30pm at the Lake Hāwea Community Centre and find out about the things we have done and what our aims and objectives are for the 2026 – 2027 year.
How do we get more people

WHAT: Hāwea Community Association Annual General Meeting.
The front yard will be full of goodquality outdoor gear, including tents, sleeping bags, kayaks, surfboards, wetsuits, skateboards and camping equipment. Inside, expect summer dresses, shirts, shorts, skirts, swimwear, shoes and accessories, with some great one-of-a-kind finds too. “We love seeing the shop and yard come together for the Summer Fair. There’s so much colour and it really feels like the start of summer here,” says event organiser Mathilde Fonteneau. “It’s great knowing this gear will be heading off with someone else in the community who’ll get more use out of it.”
Float-O-Booth Wānaka will bring its converted horse-truck photo booth, free for everyone, with props and custom photo strips. Sweet Spot NZ will be serving donuts and real fruit ice cream. The onsite car park and donation drop-off lane will be closed for the day. Traffic management will be on hand to help with parking across the road. With the Golf Course Road roundabout closed, visitors are encouraged to come via Riverbank Road or Three Parks and use the pedestrian entrance. Wastebusters kindly asks anyone with donations to drop off to hold onto them until the following week.

ON 2 OCTOBER, POLICE ARRESTED and charged a 50-year-old male with two counts of assault on a person in a family relationship, three counts of wilful damage, and one count of impeding breathing. He appeared in Queenstown District Court on 5 October. IN A SEPARATE INCIDENT on 4 October, Police arrested and charged a 47-year-old Lake Hāwea male with failing to stop for an enforcement officer, refusing an officer’s request to provide a blood specimen, two counts of threatening to cause grievous bodily harm, resisting Police, two counts of assaulting Police, and wilful damage. POLICE CONTINUE TO RECEIVE REPORTS of online banking fraud / scams. Police encourage anyone purchasing goods or services online to exercise caution, particularly when dealing with private sellers through social media platforms. The public is advised to be wary of requests for direct bank transfers, avoid purchasing from newly created or suspicious accounts, and take steps to independently verify the legitimacy of sellers before making any payment.

IF YOU RECEIVE A CALL from someone claiming to represent your bank, hang up and contact your bank directly using a trusted phone number. Anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to a scam should contact their bank immediately and report the matter to Police via 105. Information relating to scam activity can also be reported to Netsafe at netsafe.org.nz. POLICE ATTENDED A COLLISION involving a cyclist and a vehicle at the intersection of Wanaka-Luggate Highway and Ballantyne Road on Tuesday 29 September. The cyclist sustained minor injuries. A male driver has been charged with careless driving. POLICE CONTINUE TO TAKE a zero-tolerance approach to impaired driving. Alcohol remains a significant contributing factor in serious and fatal crashes across New Zealand, and drivers who choose to get behind the wheel while impaired put themselves and other road users at risk. Police encourage anyone planning to consume alcohol to arrange a safe way home and help us keep our roads safe. A 34-YEAR-OLD WOMAN was stopped on Plantation Road and returned an evidential breath alcohol result of 316 mcg/L. She was issued with an infringement notice. A 52-YEAR-OLD MAN was stopped on Mt Aspiring Road and returned a result of 400 mcg/L. He was issued with an infringement notice. A 43-YEAR-OLD MAN was stopped on Plantation Road and returned a result of 384 mcg/L. He was issued with an infringement notice. A 30-YEAR-OLD MAN was stopped on Plantation Road and returned a result of 716 mcg/L. He has been charged and is due to appear in the Queenstown District Court. POLICE ENCOURAGE ANYONE PLANNING to head into the high country or use local lakes and rivers around Wānaka and the wider Southern Lakes region, to carefully assess conditions and ensure they are well prepared before setting out. Thorough preparation, careful planning, and conservative decision-making remain the most effective ways to stay safe. POLICE ENCOURAGE PEOPLE to plan, carry appropriate equipment, inform someone of their intended route and expected return time, and be prepared for changing conditions. Taking these simple steps can make a significant difference and help ensure everyone returns home safely. POLICE NON-EMERGENCY REPORTING. Police encourage members of the public to report suspicious activity, fraud, lost property, unsafe driving, and other non-emergency incidents via 105 or online at 105.police.govt.nz. This is the most efficient way to get reports and information into the Police system, allowing Police Communications staff to assess, prioritise, and direct to the appropriate officer or workgroup. Community reporting plays a vital role in helping Police prevent and respond to offending. NEW ZEALAND POLICE NON-EMERGENCY. Use the online report options to make a non-emergency report, or you can call us on 105 (TEN-FIVE) 24/7. If it’s happening now, or someone’s in danger, call 111 (TRIPLE-ONE).

Adding a layer of protection to Bullock Creek wetlands
MY COMMUNITY NEWS
At its core, Bullock Creek is a seepage wetlands which is quite unusual and the water that comes from the banks into the stream flowing through Wānaka is exceptionally pure.
WE DEL EVERY WEDNE
Predator Free Wānaka wanted to enhance the mahi (work) the Friends of Bullock Creek (FOBC) have already put into this incredible wetlands by spending the day installing a network of traps to protect its native plantings and ensure the native birds that call this home can thrive.

Have you been to Bullock Creek wetlands? It’s beautiful in there, like a mini-Zealandia with tūī and kōmako. It’s an amazing oasis right in the middle of Wānaka where you can stroll quietly in the native forest and listen to the birds sing.
FOBC’s Paul van Clink says the traps will support the wetlands, “With a larger network of traps, we are expecting to catch more ship rats which will benefit the native fauna”. Predator Free Wānaka’s volunteer coordinator Megan Davies, who was part of the team installing the traps, is equally enthusiastic, “This is a wonderful space to teach our tamariki about the importance of the ngahere (bush) and the manu (birds) which live here and by removing introduced predators, all things will thrive”.

Growing demand adds momentum to Wānaka Performing Arts Precinct Wānaka’s appetite for live performance and cultural activity is growing and increasingly stretching the facilities available to support it. Against this backdrop, the Wānaka Performing Arts Precinct (WPAP) is gaining fresh momentum, with a renewed community-led team building on the work already undertaken and shaping a cultural and civic precinct for Wānaka and the wider Upper Clutha. presented there and can add cost and complexity for local organisations and visiting productions.
“The question is not simply what we need today. It is what we want this place and this community to be for generations to come. Wānaka is growing quickly, but the civic and cultural facilities that support our community have not kept pace. We have an opportunity now to plan ahead and create something of lasting value for the whole community.”
The vision for WPAP extends well beyond a performance venue. It is for a cultural and civic precinct, with purpose-built performing arts spaces alongside complementary community and civic uses. It will be a place to be and discover every day, where peopleIfcan gather, perform, you have ‘No junk ma learn, create and connect.
Recent local productions provide compelling evidence of that growing demand. Stars In Your Eyes expanded to five performances this year, with all 1,675 seats selling out within 90 minutes and a further 550 tickets requested through its waitlist. More than 120 performers, musicians, dancers and volunteers were involved, with organisers saying they are now constrained by the capacity of the Lake Wānaka Centre. OnStage Wānaka is seeing similar momentum. Its recent That Bloody Woman season played to more than 94% capacity across eight performances and involved more than 90 volunteers. The company has already announced its next major production, All Shook Up. The Lake Wānaka Centre has been an extraordinary community workhorse for more than 25 years and continues to host a wide range of performances and events. But its size, stage, acoustics, accessibility and supporting infrastructure increasingly limit what can be

The precinct is intended to support local arts organisations, schools, performers and the wider community while also creating opportunities to attract visiting artists, productions and events. The Lake Wānaka Arts and Culture Trust is continuing to work alongside QLDC, Kāi Tahu, local arts and 03 443 7805 hello@mymessen community organisations, funders and| other supporters as the project develops. Howard said the community is leading this project: “Success of this kind does not happen by accident. It requires foresight, collaboration and a willingness to think beyond the immediate. We have an opportunity to create a cultural and civic heart for Wānaka that future generations will be proud we had the vision to begin.” For more information visit wpap.nz Submitted by Nicki McDonald
Workshop to help community boards get their governance right Community boards across Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes are invited to a practical workshop on getting the governance basics right and building a strong board culture. Better Board Vibes: Getting your governance foundations and board culture right, will be held at Cromwell Presbyterian Church on Thursday, 5 November, from 4.30pm to 6.45pm. The session is hosted by huddl, an initiative that strengthens and supports community groups, charitable organisations and networks in the region. Dr Jo Cribb will facilitate. She is an experienced board director, consultant, strategist and author who regularly facilitates for the Institute of Directors. In 2021 she received the Notfor-Profit Governance Leader Award from Women in Governance. “Good governance isn’t just about ticking the compliance boxes, it’s about how a board actually works together,” says huddl Project Lead Jennifer Huddleston.
HAVE A STORY TO SHARE?
We’d love to hear it... If you’re a community group, charity, not-for-profit or if you have a communityminded story to share, we’d love to hear from you!
She says the session suits board members who want to nail the basics, and boards that want to work even better together as a team. “It’s a practical, down to earth session, useful whether your board is just getting started or already going well and looking to sharpen how you operate.” Submitted by Jennifer Huddleston
