We’re Nearly Halfway There
A few weeks ago, we asked for your help. We told you that winter brings real hardship for some local families — and thanks to your generosity, we’ve already raised $35,000 t oward our $60,000 goal.
Just last week, a young mother came to us — clearly distressed. She and her partner are raising a baby under one year old. She’s on maternity leave and not earning at present. They rent, and with no extended family support nearby, they’ve been getting by on a single income. But when her partner recently lost hours at work, that income dropped even furthe r Their anxiety about the future was extreme. Suddenly, living in Wānaka felt out of reach.
Because of the donations we’ve received so far, we were able to act immediately. We provided firewood, easing one of the biggest stressors they were facing — the fear of their child being cold this winte r. To say they were relieved is an understatement. This could be one of your neighbours. In fact, one in three homes in Wānaka has little or no disposable income to cover unforeseen expenses.
That’s the kind of difference your donations are making — right now.

Community Talk on the Remarkable Lizards of Aotearoa
A conservation talk is being held on Wednesday, 21 May at the Wanaka Community Hub, starting at 7.00pm.
Author Anna Yeoman will speak about: Geckos and skinks. The remarkable lizards of Aotearoa.
This is the topic of her book which is the rst to tell stories about the lizards of Aotearoa New Zealand, how and where they live, and how they breed. She will provide a fascinating insight into the ongoing conservation e orts for our geckos and skinks that are increasingly threatened by habitat loss and predation from pests. Anna is a ranger at Central Otago’s predator proof Mokomoko Dryland Sanctuary and her knowledge and enthusiasm will shine a light on these shy, secretive lizards. This talk is presented by Forest & Bird (Central Otago Lakes Branch), Mātakitaki Conservation Group, Predator Free Wānaka and Southern Lakes Sanctuary.

WAI Wānaka are hosting a volunteer beach clean-up at Scotts Beach, Lake Hāwea this month. Walk, carpool or join the community bike ride from Heatwave, Wānaka.
Scotts Beach is a prime spot on Lake Hāwea during the summer months. Last November, WAI Wānaka hosted a volunteer beach clean-up, where the rubbish was sorted and recorded into the Sustainable Coastline’s National Litter Intelligence Database, contributing to long-term environmental solutions.
Six months later, we’re heading back to clean up the beach area again, to reassess the survey area and track what litter is collected this time around. Come on down, bring your gloves, friends and whanau, and get involved.
Hāwea Store & Kitchen are providing some delicious kai for volunteers. We also have a couple of sauna sessions to give away on the day, thanks to The Secret Sauna.
Plus, the good folk at Heatwave and MAAP have organised community bike rides to head from Heatwave, in Wānaka and ride out to the beach clean-up. Meet at Heatwave at 8.30am to join the crew.

Between May and July Fire Brigades throughout New Zealand generally see an increase by over 50% in heat source related house fires. You can help us and yourselves by doing the following: Keep everything at least a metre away from any heat source. Check your electric blankets. Faulty electric blankets are a fire waiting to happen. If you feel unusually hot patches in the blanket or it is over 5 years old, get rid of it. Remove the lint from your dryer after every use. Get your chimney cleaned before the first fire of the season.
