On Saturday, 24 January, between 1.00pm 3.00pm, WAI are having a beach clean-up and microplastic sampling at the Outlet. The aim? To help build a better picture of what is impacting local freshwater systems, as well as removing the rubbish from the whenua (land) that can end up in the waterways. Gear up at hunting and fishing boot sale The Upper Clutha Branch NZ Deerstalkers Association is holding a boot sale of surplus hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor gear in Wānaka on Sunday, 25 January between 10.00am and 3.00pm. It will be held indoors at the Wanaka Districts Club, 45 Plantation Road, Wānaka and will be open to the general public with a $2 gold coin donation at the door. Anyone is welcome to bring and display items for sale, subject to a registration process.

December Update from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade Happy New Year from all of us at the Wānaka brigade. Here’s to a safe and successful 2026.

Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve were pleasantly quiet for us. It’s been ticking along steadily otherwise. A big thank you to everyone who has given us space when you’ve seen us coming in the ridiculous traffic. Apologies to those we’ve made jump with the airhorn… you probably deserved it though! The trucks carry around 2000 litres of water, plus all our gear, and a crew of 4-6 firefighters. We’re heavy!

When we have to slow down behind you, it takes some time for us to get back up to speed. Those few minutes could mean the difference to someone’s life or property. I’ll sign off this month’s update by passing on the brigade’s thanks to Mark Strang, as he steps down as our Deputy Chief. Mark is an invaluable member of our team; thankfully he is staying on in the brigade. Tom Syben is taking on the 2IC spot; congratulations Tom. We’re all behind you and are looking forward to a great year.
