Welcome Back! Rotary D9980 (Spanning Timaru through to Bluff) recently partnered with Rotary District 5910 from South East Texas, USA for a vocational Group Study Exchange (GSE) of young professionals aged 25-40. What is Group Study Exchange? The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of the Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional people in the early years of their professional lives. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members are hosted by Rotarians and experience the host country’s institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. Our most excellent team comprises: Rotarian team leader Jackie St John, Lawyer, sponsored
by Dunedin Rotary Club; Anne Marie Cowan, Vet Nurse, sponsored by Cromwell Rotary Club; Anne Batchelor, Primary School Teacher, sponsored by Alexandra Rotary Club; Dan Hellyer, Accountant, sponsored by Dunedin South Rotary Club and Pip Cawthorn, Graphic Design Artist, sponsored by Wanaka Rotary Club. Team members will have their long term career paths, personal and professional development greatly impacted and enhanced by their participation in this GSE experience. They were hosted by Rotarians in D5910 and had work placements with their counterparts in Texas. They also took the opportunity to introduce Texans to our part of the world and gave presentations to various Rotary Clubs and Rotarians at the D5910 District Conference. Another busy week this week for the Wanaka Police. Here is a snap shot of some of the things that have occurred in and around our town: Police are investigating a burglary at the Lake Hawea Hotel. Enquiries are on-going. We ask if you have any information about this matter please call the Wanaka Police Station, ph 443 7272. A reminder about firearm safety. When driving, if you are carrying a firearm, the firearm is to be safely put away, in the boot if you have one. The bolt and ammo separate from the weapon. A trigger guard is preferable. If found in the vehicle loaded, there will be a fine issued of $150.00 and details also passed to our Firearms team in Dunedin for them to consider your licence status. Unfortunately there are still people drinking and driving in our town. This week a young male and a female have been processed and are off to court. There was a crash on the Crown Range Road, caused by black ice during the week. Time to take care on the roads through shaded areas first thing in the morning and watch the weather forecasts. Look out for heavy rain with the loosened rocks, following the earthquake and the after-shocks, they are falling onto the roads. Clear them off the roadway if it is safe to do so. Another very drunk person has gone to a wrong address on the weekend. Please, if you are having a party, look after the team and get them to stay the night if you cannot organise a safe way of getting them home. Common sense should prevail here. The community has been rocked by a serious assault on one of our young fathers. A strong team of Police personal from all over New Zealand have come to town to assist in the investigation and we are employing all manner of skill sets on this case. Our thoughts are with him and his family at this time. If you see something going wrong, then you do something right and call 111. Please take care out there.
