Wānaka’s biggest secondhand ski drop is back this May, with Wastebusters preparing for one of its most anticipated weekends of the year.
Taking place on 16 and 17 May, the Wasties Winter Drop brings together a huge range of quality preloved gear to help locals and visitors get winter-ready. From skis, snowboards and boots, to helmets and goggles, the event has become a go-to for those looking to gear up without the price tag of buying new. A strong selection of kids’ gear will also be available, making it a popular stop for families.
Reuse Team Leader Mathilde Fonteneau says the quality of gear this year has stood out.
“We’ve got some really great gear this year,” she says. “There’s a strong mix of well-known brands like Armada, K2, Atomic, Burton, Patagonia and more, and
it’s always great to see it heading back out into the community to be used again.”
Alongside hard gear, shoppers can expect plenty of winter clothing, including ski jackets, snow pants and merino layers. While the full range will be available across opening weekend, more clothing will continue to be put out in the weeks that follow.
Now firmly part of Wānaka’s lead-in to winter, the event offers a practical way to prepare for the season while keeping quality gear in circulation.
Delhi Hut Food Truck and Cat Rescue Wānaka’s fundraiser bake sale will be onsite, keeping attendees fuelled throughout the day. The Winter Drop runs from 9.00am to 5.00pm at Wastebusters both days, with traffic management in place and carpooling encouraged.

Quiz night fundraiser for junior rugby tour
In September, the Upper Clutha Year 8 Rugby team will head across the ditch to Sydney, where they will line up in their black and gold jerseys against both city and rural clubs, in a tour celebrating the end of their junior rugby years.
The 24-player squad and their families have been working hard to raise the funds needed to make the tour possible. It’s a significant target, but they are well on their way thanks to strong club and community support – and they are now gearing up for their next major fundraiser: the 'Across the Ditch' Quiz Night, being held on Friday, 26 June.
The Quiz Night will feature trans-Tasman trivia, set within a fun, relaxed atmosphere, with organisers keen to see how people embrace the 'Iconic Aussie' dress-up theme.
Tables are $400 for a team of eight, which includes a drink on arrival, grazing platters, and the chance to win great prizes. Auction items range from a helicopter flight kindly donated by the evening’s sponsor, Aspiring Helicopters, to the slightly more creative item of 24 weeks of home baking, donated by the squad’s parents.
Tickets are on sale now, and organisers would love to see a full house in support of the lads.

E-learning platform for community groups and creatives
A free new e-learning platform is now available to help strengthen the skills of community groups, creatives and for-purpose organisations across Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago.
The Learning Space is a one-year pilot codelivered by huddl and the Three Lakes Cultural Trust, funded through the Department of Internal Affairs. The platform offers short self-paced video workshops, downloadable templates and an online networking space.
The programme includes ten workshops covering topics such as governance, strategic planning, funding, evaluation, health and safety, sustainability, and storytelling. Workshops are broken into short chapters, allowing members to learn at their own pace, individually or with their teams and boards.

Wānaka welcomes International Yoga Day
The International Day of Yoga (IDY) Wānaka returns for its 7th edition this June, this time in a stunning new location: Rippon Hall. Overlooking Lake Wānaka and surrounded by mountains and vineyards, the venue will host two full days dedicated to yoga, connection, mindfulness, and community.
Taking place on 20–21 June, the community-based event brings together local and visiting teachers offering a wide range of sessions, including Vinyasa, Yin, Kundalini, Qigong, Yoga Nidra, meditation, breathwork, and more. Every year, the event welcomes attendees from across Otago, with many travelling from Queenstown, Dunedin and Central Otago to be part of the celebration.
This year’s international theme, Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom & World Peace, invites participants to explore yoga beyond physical movement and reconnect with themselves,
others, and nature in a deeper way. Organiser Keity Garcia says the temporary move to Rippon Hall reflects this vision beautifully.
“Rippon has a very special energy and connection with nature. With the lake and mountains views, it feels deeply aligned with this year’s theme and the sense of peace and connection we hope people experience during the event.”
Since its first edition, IDY Wānaka has grown into a much-loved annual gathering, welcoming people of all ages and experience levels. The event remains donation-based, with profits supporting local charities and community groups.
