Winter Vegetable Gardening with Dr Compost It’s lucky that Hawea’s Ben Elms is passionate about composting and vegetable gardening. As Dr Compost, he’s been running workshops in Wanaka and Queenstown for the last seven years, and is often asked for composting and gardening advice at parties or walking down the street. Next week Dr Compost is holding his last workshop before the winter, on vegetable gardening through the winter. “Jack Frost is a great equaliser, so it doesn’t matter if you’re a total beginner or an experienced gardener, come along and bring all your gardening questions,” says Ben. “We’ll look at which vegetables will survive the cold, when to plant and when to harvest.” The workshop will also cover mulching, planting green manures and
using cloches to extend the growing season. There’s nothing better for your veggie garden than a big dose of homemade compost. Dr Compost will also be demonstrating different methods of composting at the A&P show. The Wanaka Wastebusters website www. wanakawastebusters.co.nz also has lots of information to help work out which system will suit you. Composting reduces methane emissions from landfills and stops your rubbish bag from getting smelly. As I prepare this Crimeline, my first for 2014, I am finding my way around the new Wanaka Police Station and adjusting to no longer working in Dunedin. The contents listed below remind me that 'the same old' is still happening in this amazing part of the world : On 3 February an older male placed a vibrator in a display of parsnips in the New World Supermarket. That person will soon be identified from the in-store video footage and is advised to own up to this offensive behaviour. On 4 February there was an incident in Ardmore St involving a dispute over rent money which was likely to end up in violence and arrests, but it appears that the two parties have found a way to resolve the matter, rather than explaining to a Judge in Queenstown. On 5 February outside a McLeod Ave address, a group of youths damaged a Honda car parked there, and a number of them are now being dealt with by our Youth Aid Section. On 6 February a party in Minaret Road got out of hand due to too much alcohol, and damage to a fence resulted. On 7 February an evening wedding function was disrupted when the brother of the groom became intoxicated and assaulted his father who was attempting to calm the situation. A window of one of our Police vehicles was damaged by the brother and charges have resulted. Also that evening an occupant of a white van driven on Lakeside Drive threw a bottle at a pedestrian, hitting him, causing cuts to his face. Enquiries are continuing to locate the twit that threw the bottle. In the early hours of 9 February fence palings outside a Tenby Street address were smashed. Anyone having information relating to the incident is asked to contact the Wanaka Police. Between 2am and 3am that same night a blue and silver Trek 4300 MTB was taken from outside Opium Bar on Ardmore St. Perhaps a lock would have been a good idea? Those people that wear head-phones while walking or jogging around Wanaka should remember to look both ways before crossing the streets. Motorists not expecting joggers who walk out in front of them without looking to see if the way is clear may be forgiven for running you over! Have a great week.
