WAI Wānaka is proud to present Alpine Lakes Forum 2025 - a two-day science and community event focused on the future of Otago’s deep alpine lakes. Co-hosted with the University of Otago and Otago Regional Council, it’s a chance to connect with leading freshwater scientists, policy-makers, and environmental advocates.
Building on the success of 2023’s Knowledge into Action for Otago’s Alpine Deep-Water Lakes Summit, this year’s forum shifts from expert-only sessions to a more inclusive, community-facing format. The goal: to bring together scientific experts, policy-makers and our community to explore the health and future of Otago’s deep lakes and freshwater ecosystems.

Grow Wānaka Community Garden and Habitate Landscape Design and Nursery are teaming up for a hands-on workshop and book launch event on 22 November.
Join us at Grow Wānaka for a Natural Fruit Tree Pruning & Training Workshop from 1.00pm2.30pm. Jason will show you how to prune and train your fruit trees the natural way, where pruning is minimised for healthier trees and less work for you in the long run.
Timing is everything, we will be doing summer pruning, branch training and fruit thinning.
Jason will demonstrate and share the principles and then you will get to have a go.

As the summer months approach, we’re preparing for another busy watering season and are looking for volunteers to join our watering team.
Caring for young native plants through the hot, dry months is a vital part of ensuring the success of our community habitat restoration projects. Regular watering helps our plants survive their rst few summers and grow strong enough to thrive on their own.
Volunteering with us is a handson way to contribute to local conservation. No prior experience is needed - just a willingness to get involved, learn, and spend time outdoors. We’ll provide guidance, equipment, and plenty of appreciation! Sam was part of
the watering team last summer and says: “I really enjoyed the opportunity to spend time outdoors with an extra purpose. It was quite a mindful experience working my way around the site, and I got quite attached to ‘my’ plants! Every time I walk past them I know I’ve done a small bit to help them grow and thrive.”
Watering shifts are exible, and the more people we have, the lighter the load for everyone. Whether you can help once a week or once a month, every e ort makes a real di erence.

Update on the Month of October from the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade
This month, we just want to say: Thank you. We’re incredibly grateful to serve such a caring and generous community.
Every single person on our crew volunteers to answer the call - this month, those calls have included toaster mishaps and wobbly bike rides, car crashes, co-responses with St John, and a few rebellious smoke alarms. We also tackled our second 5G tower incident and met one brave kid who took on some ambitious climbing frame acrobatics.
You don’t need to say thank you, but when you do, it means the world. From chocolates, home baking and hand-drawn pictures to refreshing beverages, and generous donations from individuals and organisations. Whether it’s a sugar boost after a tough call, a shared moment that lifts our spirits, equipment that helps us do our job better, or simply something that makes us smile - every gesture makes a real difference. Thank you for being part of this with us.
