WĀNAKA COMMUNITY WORKSHOP LOOKS TO THE FUTURE Complete the survey to have your say Wānaka Community Workshop is growing – and we are starting to think about what comes next. Founded in 2020, WCW is a charitable trust providing people across the Upper Clutha with access to practical tools, equipment, skills and opportunities to learn, make, repair and share. Our Wood Workshop and Sewing Room bring people of all ages and backgrounds together through memberships, classes, volunteer sessions and community projects, while helping to keep useful materials in circulation and out of landfill. From woodworking and sewing classes to mending, upcycling, repair projects and community initiatives, both spaces are used by people of all ages and abilities. Volunteers are an important part of what we do, sharing their knowledge and skills while creating opportunities for people to connect and contribute.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Mount Aspiring College’s Past Present Future Visual Arts Exhibition The Mount Aspiring College Art Department warmly invites the community to visit our Past Present Future exhibition, celebrating the creativity of young people from across the Upper Clutha region. This exhibition is inspired by the whakataukī Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua 'I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past.' This whakataukī reminds us that while we look to the future, we are guided by the people, experiences and learning that have shaped us.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Early learning service earns Heart Foundation award

Learn to hunt with Upper Clutha Deerstalkers

If you’ve ever thought about taking up hunting, the Upper Clutha Deerstalkers Association has a great opportunity coming up this spring. Its eight-week HUNTS training course, running from 20 September to 18 October, is designed for novice and aspiring hunters wanting to learn the skills needed to head into the outdoors safely and confidently. Aspire Nursery & Preschool in Wānaka has earned a Rito level in the Tohu Manawa Ora | Healthy Heart Award from the Heart Foundation in recognition for their efforts to create a heart-healthy environment – the first early learning service in Wānaka to receive the award in almost 10 years. To achieve this award, the early learning service supported tamariki through developing a nourishing menu, providing a wide range of fundamental movement skills and working collaboratively alongside whānau to support the development, growth and wellbeing of their children. Centre Director, Anita Presbury, says she and her team are incredibly proud to receive the award. The whole teaching team at Aspire Nursery & Preschool worked together to complete their award.

“We are incredibly proud to receive the Rito Healthy Heart Award. At Aspire, our philosophy is centred on helping children develop a lifelong love of learning and that extends to learning about their own health and wellbeing.

The course covers everything from preparing for a hunt, navigation and outdoor survival through to firearms safety, hunting techniques, field preparation and butchery. Training is provided by experienced local hunters and combines practical instruction with plenty of hands-on learning. The course finishes with a supervised live deer hunt, allowing participants to put their new skills into practice in a real hunting environment.

The free programme, which receives funding from Health New Zealand, helps early learning services create environments which promote nourishing kai and physical activity to under-fives and their whānau.

The cost is approximately $500 per person. There are now only six places remaining, so anyone interested is encouraged to get in early. POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING an alleged assault that occurred at BP Wānaka at approximately 11.45am on 29 July. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Police via 105 and quote file number 260729/9197. POLICE ARRESTED A MAN in relation to a family harm incident on 31 July. He has been charged with two counts of Assault on a Person in a Family Relationship and one count of Contravening a Protection Order. Police opposed bail. He appeared in court and was remanded in custody. POLICE ARRESTED AND CHARGED a 55-year-old man on 3 August, with two counts of Threatening Acts in relation to earlier family harm incidents. He is due to appear in the Queenstown District Court. POLICE REMAIN COMMITTED to holding offenders accountable and supporting those affected by family harm. Anyone experiencing family violence, or concerned for the safety of others, is encouraged to seek help and report concerns to Police. In an emergency, call 111. POLICE CONTINUE TO TAKE a zero-tolerance approach to impaired driving after two drivers were detected over the legal breath alcohol limit in Wānaka on 1 August. At approximately 10.30pm, Police stopped a 21-year-old woman on Ballantyne Road. She underwent evidential breath testing and returned a result of 741mcg/L. At approximately 11.40pm, Police stopped a 65-year-old man on Helwick Street. He underwent evidential breath testing and returned a result of 496mcg/L. DRIVING WHILE IMPAIRED puts motorists, passengers, and other road users at significant risk. Police encourage anyone planning to drink to arrange a sober driver, use public transport, or organise alternative transport. POLICE HAVE RECEIVED ONGOING REPORTS of undesirable and dangerous driving. This behaviour includes excessive speed, poor decisionmaking, and driving in a manner that places other road users at risk. Police urge drivers to take extra care during winter conditions, drive to the conditions, increase following distances, and be patient on the roads. Members of the public are encouraged to report dangerous driving by contacting Police via 105, or 111 if there is an immediate threat to safety. FOLLOWING THE COMPLEX MT ASPIRING RESCUE operation on 29 July, Police acknowledge the exceptional efforts of all agencies involved. The operation involved Helicopters Otago’s alpine division and the volunteer Wakatipu Alpine Cliff Rescue Team and Police, who located and rescued two climbers in extremely challenging conditions. Footage from the operation highlights the significant risks posed by the alpine environment and the professionalism displayed. POLICE ALSO RESPONDED TO a search operation on 30 July after two snowboarders walked from the summit of Treble Cone to explore beyond the ski area boundary during poor weather conditions, including snowfall and strong winds. Concern was raised by a friend at approximately 1.00pm when the pair had not returned. A search involving LandSAR Alpine Cliff Rescue volunteers, ski patrol teams, and a helicopter was initiated. Rescue teams were able to determine the snowboarders’ location, and they were found safely. THESE INCIDENTS SERVE as a reminder that conditions in the mountains can change rapidly and venturing beyond managed ski areas or into alpine terrain requires careful preparation and sound decision-making. Police urge anyone heading into the high country to check current weather and avalanche conditions before setting out. People planning backcountry trips should carry appropriate avalanche and emergency equipment, ensure they have the necessary skills and experience for the terrain, and tell someone their intended route and expected return time. OUTDOOR USERS are encouraged to make use of information available through the Department of Conservation and other reputable weather forecasting platforms when planning trips into remote areas. Rabbit Control and Baiting Operation The Department of Conservation, in conjunction with other landowners, are undertaking rabbit control using the pesticide Pindone via ground application methods in the following reserves: • Glendhu Wetland Reserve • Dublin Bay - Outlet - Albert Town Recreation Reserve (including Deans Bank) • Dublin Bay Recreation Reserve
