WĀNAKA’S MATAR I K I CELEBRATIONS

Each year, Kāhu Youth brings the community together to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year. This event has grown from a small gathering in 2010 to a highlight of the Upper Clutha calendar. What began as a potluck dinner and storytelling now includes kapa haka, activities for tamariki and rangatahi, and a large hangi feeding over 600 people! The celebration draws hundreds to the Wānaka lakefront for an afternoon and evening of connection, culture, and community.

Matariki celebrates the rising of the Te Kāhui o Matariki star cluster and is guided by three key principles:

• Remembrance - honouring those we’ve lost.

• Celebration - giving thanks for the present.

• Looking to the future - embracing renewal and hope. It’s a time to reflect, connect, and celebrate te ao Māori, the richness of Māori culture, values, and traditions.

Highlights for this year's event include;

• Kapa haka rōpū performing on the Community Stage.

• Delicious hangi served from 5.00pm. Pre-sales start at 2.00pm.

• Story telling of local Māori history and legends (purakau) by kaumātua Darren Rewi.

• MCs Paul Tamati and Ryan Enoka, sharing the meaning of Matariki.

• Kāhu Youth Pop-Up Youth Centre for rangatahi.

• Tamariki marquee with Matariki themed crafts and stories.

• Weaving workshops.

• Bonfires along the lakefront.

• Giant bubble show, a favourite for tamariki.

• Community Waiata - together we will sing Ko Te Whirika at 5.30pm along the lakefront, and we invite all to come and sing with us.

Join us on Friday, 20 June, 2.00 - 6.00pm at the Dinosaur Park. For more info visit kahuyouth.org

From Icebergs to Mountains

John Psathas is no stranger to spectacular performance settings. This spring, the celebrated composer will add Wānaka’s Rippon Hall to a list that already spans seven continents, from the Athens Olympic Games to Antarctica.

As Composer in Residence for this year’s At the World’s Edge Festival, Psathas will be part of the full programme which unfolds across Wānaka, Queenstown, Cromwell, and Bannockburn. The Rippon Hall will host the world premiere of his new two-cello string quintet, one of two works commissioned for AWE 2025. Now in its fth year, AWE 2025 dives into the connection between music and nature, with the Southern Alps as its stunning backdrop. Featured artists include legendary New Zealand pianist Michael Houstoun, UK violinist Anthony Marwood, and US violinist and violist Yura Lee.

Also joining the festival is Wānaka freeskier and Olympian Jossi Wells, who will take part in a free AWE+ talk to explore the links between creativity, performance, and the natural world.

Join us for a week of world class music rooted in landscape, shared in the community. At the World’s Edge Festival runs from 4 - 12 October 2025. Tickets available at www.worldsedgefestival.com.

PISA NORTH

Aerial Bovine TB Control Operation

POSSUM CONTROL OPERATION

Contract Wild Animal Control (NZ) Limited wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the Pisa North Area. The operation is being undertaken on behalf of OSPRI New Zealand to protect local farms from tuberculosis infection.

CONTROL AREA

The Pisa North treatment area is located approximately 8 km southeast of Wanaka, at the northern end of the Pisa Range, it consists of steep country within the Luggate Creek and Alice Burn catchments. There is no public access to the operational area.

A detailed map of the operational area can be viewed: Online at: www.ospri.co.nz/pest-ops-status. Or by request: guil@cwacnzl.com

COMMENCEMENT DATE

The operation will commence with the application(s) of non-toxic cereal pre-feed pellets beginning on the first day of favourable weather after the 1st of July 2025. Following completion of pre-feeding, the application of cereal pellets containing 1080 will commence on or after the 7th July 2025.

BAIT DESCRIPTION

Pre-feed: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, brown in colour.

BAIT DESCRIPTION

Toxic bait: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, dyed green with a toxic loading of 1.5g/kg Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080).

PRECAUTIONS

The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. Children should be kept under strict supervision in the operational area.
