The Upper Clutha’s much‑loved Pet Therapy programme is making a welcome return and growing. It’s generating excitement from schools, libraries and seniors’ accommodation across the region.
Since April, Community Link has been working behind the scenes to relaunch the outreach initiative, previously run by St John, which connects volunteer dog owners and their friendly companions with people who benefit from a little extra warmth and connection.
The programme brings gentle, sociable dogs into community spaces where they offer more than just a wagging tail – they boost mood, encourage communication, and even support learning. There is growing anticipation in Hāwea, where interest in visits is high. Now, the call is out for more volunteers
to help meet demand. Community Link is hoping to welcome at least eight new volunteers from across the region.
If you have a calm, happy and people‑loving pooch, and an hour to spare each week, fortnight or even month, you could make a real difference. Pet therapy visits are simple but powerful; time spent with a dog often brightens the day and, somehow, helps us all feel a little more human.
Those interested in becoming part of the programme are encouraged to get in touch with Gill at support@communitylink.nz.
With more wagging tails on the way, the future is looking brighter, one paw at a time.

Growing local food networks - Wao Green Drinks event
As the cost of living continues to rise across the Southern Lakes, more people are looking for practical ways to reduce household pressure while building stronger local connections.
That conversation will take centre stage at Wao’s upcoming Green Drinks event, Growing Local Food Networks, on Wednesday, 17 June at the Lake Wānaka Centre.
Part of Wao’s wider Resilience Response initiative, the evening will explore how local food growing, sharing, hunting, fishing and preserving can help strengthen community resilience across the Upper Clutha.
The event will introduce three emerging community-led initiatives: Kai Connect - small decentralised food networks connecting local

producers; Carb Club - collaborative growing of staple carbohydrate crops; and the Seedling Cooperative - community coordination around growing and sharing seedlings.
Bannockburn local Nita Smith will share insights from helping establish a Seedling Cooperative in her community – while local hunters, fishers and foragers will also contribute practical perspectives and local knowledge.
Unlike a traditional speaker event, the evening is designed around participation and connection.
Whether you grow vegetables, keep chickens, preserve food, hunt, fish, forage, or are simply curious about local food resilience, everyone is welcome.

Back again after all previous events sold out, Wastebusters’ popular Natural Cleaning: A Low Waste Living Workshop is returning to the Wānaka Community Hub on Tuesday, 16 June from 6.008.00pm.
The hands-on evening workshop focuses on practical, affordable ways to clean the home using low-tox ingredients such as vinegar and baking soda. Participants will learn how to make everyday products including laundry powder, toilet pods and scent jars, while picking up simple ideas to reduce waste and save money at home.
Wastebusters Low Waste Living expert Ruth Blunt says the workshop is designed to make sustainable living feel realistic and approachable.
“Sustainable living isn’t about being perfect,” she says. “It’s about finding practical ways to reduce waste, lower toxins in the home and make small
changes that work for your lifestyle.”
Blunt says many attendees are surprised by how simple and effective natural cleaning can be. “Most of the recipes use affordable ingredients and are really easy to recreate at home,” she says. Tickets are $10 and include kai, drinks and takehome cleaning products. Spaces are limited, with registrations available through wastebusters.co.nz/events.

More than just a riverbank clean-up
WHAT: Cardrona Riverbank Clean-up.
WHEN: Wednesday, 17 June, 12.00 – 1.30pm.
WHERE: Cardrona River (Ballantyne Rd access).
Beach clean-ups along rivers and lakes play an important role in protecting freshwater ecosystems before litter and pollutants travel downstream. With Wānaka being located at the headwaters of the Mata-au (Clutha River), what we do locally has a direct impact on communities and ecosystems further down the line.
Most litter in waterways comes from land-based sources, often building on riverbanks before being washed into rivers during rainfall. Removing rubbish early helps stop it from breaking into microplastics, which are now widespread in freshwater systems and known to harm aquatic life.
WAI Wānaka runs monthly clean-ups at six locations. Each clean-up includes a Litter Intelligence audit, where rubbish is weighed, sorted, and recorded to track trends. At the last Cardrona River clean-up, volunteers removed 280kg of rubbish, 43% of it plastic. Learn more at: waiwanaka.nz/events.

Celebrating and seeking volunteers
National Volunteer Week, Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu, is New Zealand’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and runs from June 14 to June 20. Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society of New Zealand’s annual fundraising campaign, is held on the last Friday of August each year. For the past few years, I have had the privilege of coordinating the Daffodil Day Street Appeal in Wānaka, and the support of our local volunteer community has been instrumental in making each event a success. To celebrate National Volunteer Week, all past,
present and prospective Daffodil Day volunteers are invited to join me in recognising the valuable contribution volunteers make to our community. Come along and enjoy complimentary refreshments and good company with fellow volunteers. Bring your ideas, experiences and enthusiasm to volunteer again this year. Information will also be available to help spread the word about Daffodil Day 2026.
If you would like to volunteer for this year’s Daffodil Day Street Appeal on Friday, 28 August, please register your interest – together, our volunteers make a real difference.

Bike Wānaka calls for community input
Bike Wānaka is inviting riders and residents to have their say in its annual survey, aiming to shape the future of bike trails, events and advocacy in Wānaka.
The club is seeking feedback from everyone, whether they’ve been on the trails every weekend, attended a handful of events, or simply followed from the sidelines. Responses are welcomed from both members and nonmembers.
The survey asks participants what they enjoy most about riding in Wānaka, which trails they use regularly, and which they avoid — and why. It also explores priorities for trail development, improvements for the coming season, and where the club should focus its advocacy efforts.
Bike Wānaka says the feedback plays a direct role in guiding its planning and investment decisions.
All questions are optional, and the survey takes only a few minutes to complete, and participants will go in the draw to win a $500 Racers Edge voucher.
“Every perspective counts,” the club says, encouraging the community to get involved.

GENERAL
CRIME LINE
AROUND MIDNIGHT on 28 May, Police received multiple calls to an address in Brewster Crescent, Lake Hāwea, related to the activities of a group of around 5 young males aged approximately 16 to 18 years old. Initial reports included ‘banging on windows’, ‘kicking letterboxes’, and jumping over fences into private backyards. Further reports came from the Longview development, included reports of banging on windows and potential interference with vehicles. Enquiries led Police to conduct a door knock in Grandview Road. Enquiries established the responsible host, and the parent was intoxicated and uncooperative with Police.
POLICE RESPONDED TO A WATER RESCUE on Lake Wānaka on Saturday, 31 May at approximately 7.00pm. A male had initially swamped his boat near Rumbling Burn. The male liaised with Police but eventually got his boat going and advised that he would get himself back to Wānaka. The male called Police about an hour later stating he was in the middle of the Lake, and his boat was sinking. A short time later the boat was in a serious predicament about 1km from Mou Wahu. The male was in the Lake without a life jacket. His PLB was not set off and went down with the boat. This activated a full SAR response, including Coast Guard and Air Ambulance. The male had his cell phone and was able to stay on the line to Police and provide updates which were related to Coastguard. Coastguard described 1m swells and very windy conditions to respond in. Had the male not relayed his position in relation to the boat or had his phone screen as a light, Coastguard may not have located him. The male was located clinging to part of a seat and windscreen.
POLICE REMIND PEOPLE who purchase anything on Facebook to be mindful of scams. There are plenty of people out there who will take advantage of people’s good will. You are well within your rights to pay the seller on delivery to ensure that you are protected.
ON 30 MAY, POLICE were made aware of a firearms accident where a 50-year-old male injured a 15-year-old male while they were out rabbit shooting. The injuries sustained were not life threatening, however required a rescue heli transfer from Wānaka to Dunedin hospital. This incident serves to remind people about the cardinal rules of firearms safety.
PLAN SAFE, ACT SAFE, STAY SAFE. Treat as loaded. Safe direction. Chamber a round only when ready to fire. Identify your target. Check your firing zone (what if I miss). Storage and transport of firearms.
POLICE CONDUCTED AN ALCOHOL CHECKPOINT at approximately 10.00pm on Friday, 29 May on Ardmore Street, Wānaka. A 32 year old male was the driver of a motor vehicle and was observed completing a U-turn short of the checkpoint and what appeared to be an attempt at avoidance. The vehicle was stopped by Police and the male underwent evidential breath alcohol procedures at the Wānaka Police Station producing a reading of 456mcg/L.
A 32-YEAR-OLD MALE was driving his motor vehicle on Wānaka-Luggate Highway at approximately 10.00pm on Wednesday, 27 May. Police were conducting an alcohol checkpoint. The male failed a passive breath test and was required to undergo a breath screening test. He passed a BST with a result of <250. Subsequent checks of the police database revealed that the male was a disqualified driver. His vehicle was impounded and will be appearing in Queenstown District Court.

VOLUNTEER CHAIR
Seeking a champion deeply connected to place
Having laid the groundwork, the Aspiring Community Foundation is seeking a well-connected, respected local to be our Chair. This is a rare opportunity to shape philanthropy across the Upper Clutha, for generations to come.
Who we are
We are locals who believe in giving where we live and investing in our shared future. As the needs of our people and our place evolve, philanthropy helps communities thrive. We aim to make giving accessible, connecting donors with causes that matter to them, protecting and growing funds forever.
Our values define us
• Connected – Our community is at the heart of everything we do.
• Integrity – We earn trust by being accountable, transparent, and ethical.
• Approachable – Everyone who wants to give back is welcome here.
Who you are
You are already known and trusted across the Upper Clutha. Your networks run deep. Your heart is always here. People trust you to lead authentically. You don’t need to be a governance or philanthropy expert. But you do need to:
• Understand the role of a voluntary Board Chair and have some governance experience
• Be self-aware, able to interact with warmth, integrity, and humility
• Inspire trust and build meaningful relationships
• Believe that acts of generosity can create enduring change
• Approach the future with curiosity and open-mindedness
What you’ll do
As Chair, you will:
• Help shape and lead our strategic direction and long-term legacy
• Build relationships with donors, community leaders, trustees and advisors
• Champion the Foundation’s values and purpose across the Upper Clutha
Time commitment
In this startup phase, we need approximately 6-10 hours a week, including board meetings, community events, and donor conversations. As the Foundation grows, the commitment will settle into a more typical Chair role.
Ready to lead with generosity?
We don’t need a polished CV. We need your heart, your networks, your leadership and your belief in the Community Foundation model. Please send a brief expression of interest to: julie@aspiringcommunityfoundation.nz
Live here. Give here. Lead here. Turn your generosity into lasting change.
