Now in its ninth year, the Wanaka Lions Club 4WD Safari continues to offer one of the region’s most memorable off-road experiences. This year participants are privileged to have exclusive access to the spectacular Forest Range Station, an 18,500-hectare high-country property in the Lindis Valley that has been farmed by the Emmerson family since 1916. European settlement in this part of the Lindis dates back to 1858, when Forest Range formed part of the vast 352,000-acre Morven Hills Station. The land was later divided into smaller leasehold properties in 1910. Today, Forest Range Station is home to around 15,000 Merino sheep, renowned for producing some of the world’s finest ultrafine Merino fibre.
This year’s safari, held Saturday, 3 January 2026, invites drivers to explore the sweeping landscapes of the Lindis, before ascending to 1,500 metres above sea level for panoramic, awe-inspiring views of the Southern Alps, including the iconic Mt Aspiring. As the route descends through Mt Grand Station towards the Hawea Back Road, expansive vistas of Wānaka, Hāwea and Hāwea Flat dominate the horizon.
The event proudly supports the dedicated volunteers of Wanaka Search and Rescue (Wanaka LandSAR), whose vital work helps keep our outdoor community safe.
The journey concludes at John Creek, where the Wanaka Lions team will be ready with a complimentary BBQ to round off the day.

CHRISTMAS
Everyone can make a difference APPEAL
Community Link Launches 2025 Christmas Appeal
As the festive season approaches, the team at Community Link is calling on locals to once again, come together for this year’s Christmas Appeal because everyone can play a part in strengthening our community.
This year has been particularly tough for many across the Upper Clutha. Families are feeling the squeeze, and for some, Christmas is already looking more stressful than joyful. This year’s Christmas Appeal aims to change that, providing food parcels and financial support to those who need it most.
“Christmas should be a time of joy and hope, not stress,” says Community Link Chair Ian Maxwell. “The communities support helps ensure every child and whānau member can celebrate the season with hope.”
A local family who received a hamper last year shared with us their feeling of being supported, “I feel so humbled and grateful for the incredible Christmas hamper. It made such a difference to our Christmas. My daughter loved making a gingerbread house, and the practical things — like toothpaste and sunblock — were an enormous help.”
This Christmas, we are asking everyone who can in the community to join in; neighbours, businesses, schools, and clubs to help those who’ve had a tough year. Every act of generosity, big or small, helps make sure no one is left out of the celebration.
“Together, we can bring hope to every family this Christmas.”
Ian Maxwell, Chair, Community Link
If you'd like to donate food, New World is onboard again this year and for donations, visit www.communitylink.nz/support-us or scan the QR code which will lead to the donations page

Growing Native Forests workshop
Landowners, community members and anyone with a passion for growing native forests are invited to a free workshop on Saturday, 13 December. The workshop, which is hosted by Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service, aims to support sustainable native afforestation efforts. It will feature topics on assisted natural regeneration and transition forestry, growing native forests, and natives and the emissions trading scheme. These will be presented by Dr Adam Forbes from Forbes Ecology, and Aidan Braid and Evan Davies from the Forest Service, respectively.
There will also be short introductions by representatives from your local native-forest initiatives, who will be available to talk during the tea break.
This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals or
groups wanting to support biodiversity, improve water quality, or explore sustainable land-use and carbon-offset options. Assisted natural regeneration or transition forestry are lower cost methods which –if done right – can be used to establish native forest.
The workshop is free of charge, though registration via Eventbrite is appreciated. Attendees are encouraged to register soon to secure a place.

So, Guy Fawkes night was busy… We had five callouts within an hour and a half: four fireworksrelated and a car crash. Too many of you saw how quickly things can go wrong.
On 1st December we moved into a restricted fire season. This comes with the dryer weather and helps control the risk of fires escaping and reigniting. You now need a permit to light an outdoor fire. If you want a permit or need to check what you can do, go to www.checkitsalright.nz

It is likely we’ll move to a prohibited fire season before Christmas. This will mean no fires in the open and, for those of you that stockpiled with the festive season in mind, it definitely means no fireworks. There were too many near misses on Guy Fawkes; once the area has dried out even more the results could be catastrophic. As we approach the holiday season, please be mindful of the increasing population in town, check your BBQ before you light it, and be patient on our roads.
