The Wanaka Creative Fibre Group is celebrating 50 years of creativity using fibre in New Zealand. The New Zealand organisation began with a small group of spinners in Wairoa where the first Wool Week was held in 1967. This led to a televised, world record attempt for ‘fleece-to-garment’ of a man’s jersey. Such was the interest generated nationally that, in 1969, The Spinning, Weaving and Woolcrafts Council was formed. The name change, in 1996, to Creative Fibre NZ was chosen to reflect the increased diversity of fibres used, other than wool, to include crafts other than spinning and weaving, and to acknowledge that crafts were becoming, more often, combined. It was still the same organisation with a lot wider base. For

Our local membership includes spinners, weavers, knitters, crocheters, dyers and felters who use a variety of fibres such as wool, silk, linen, cotton, alpaca, flax, Tencel, paper, soya bean, banana, bamboo etc in their creations. All members are willing to share their knowledge. We meet twice monthly, on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays. Check The Messenger for details. New members are always welcome. An Open Day is to be held on Wednesday 13 November at 10.00am until 4.00pm in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Tenby St, Wanaka. Please join us if interested. Morning and afternoon tea will be supplied.
