This weekend will see the first round of the 2022-23 ‘Hydro Thunder New Zealand Championship‘ series and the 97th running of the Masport Cup to be held for the first time at Glendhu Bay, Wanaka. Hosted by the NZ Grand Prix Hydroplane Drivers Club and Acceleration on Water event team. The previous winner of the Masport Cup gets to choose the venue to defend the trophy. The Haggerty team from Cromwell with their boat Lady Liz and driver Jason Haggerty saw Glendhu Bay as a prime venue to host this year's race. Six Grand Prix hydroplanes reaching speeds in excess of 260km per hour will race on a 2km oval course of four 38sec laps. The Masport Cup will be held on Sunday over two qualifying heats, then two races to determine the overall winner.

Kia Ora Wanaka and welcome to another round up of what’s been happening in your patch this week from your team in blue on Ballantyne Road. This past week has seen an increase in vehicle crashes, it seems single vehicle crashes. These have been rolling over or sliding out onto the side of the road. Fortunately, we have not had any reports of injuries, but it seems some of the vehicles have not been up to warrant of fitness standard. Remember this is a safety check of your vehicle and is an important part of driving your vehicle on the road, not just a nice to have sticker in your windscreen. Others have been due to impairment or inattention to the road at the time. So please at this time of year leading up to the festive season, get your vehicle checked safety wise and focus on your driving, it may save either your or someone else’s life. Also, a timely reminder to keep check on your property. When loading your vehicles to go somewhere have a double check to see if you have got everything. It is a prime time for opportunists to take advantage of things you may leave behind accidentally. Don’t leave valuable items sitting in places where they can be a temptation to others to take. Unfortunately, this is not the Wanaka of old and you really should start to lock cars and hide valuables when you are not around to keep an eye on them. Again, we had a couple of family harm events this past week, so once again a timely reminder that this time of year can become very stressful on families and has the occasion to spill over into areas where help is required. So, if you are feeling things are getting on top of you, please look for the help as it is there. Scams, still a lot of them around in many various shapes and forms. These are coming in by text message, phone call and email. These will also sound very plausible and as if they are trying to help you to get you to give your bank account login details. Some will be threatening if you don’t do it this will happen. Please if you get one, delete the text or email and hang up on the call, don’t engage with them as they will be very persuasive. These will purport to be from either banks or major companies such as Chorus or Spark. Be vigilant as there are many who want to take your money in any way they can. Please don’t give them the opportunity as this is very difficult to retrieve and even track down the source as many come from overseas. Booze, the old demon, is starting to get hold of people again and making them do unsavoury things in and around town. There have been a few incidents on Friday and Saturday nights over the last weeks in town where people have over indulged. Always remember the staff on duty have the right to ask you to leave if you are intoxicated, or stop you from entering licenced premises, again if intoxicated or your behaviour is below that of acceptable on the premises. Well enough of that, now I expect Santa has the Elves working overtime to get all the toys ready for this year, and the Reindeer are on super cut diets and doing Cross Fit to be up to scratch to be able to pull the sleigh all night. So, if he’s working hard to make sure everyone has a great Christmas, shouldn’t we do the same? Well, that’s all for now folks, have a great week and stay safe.

After a hiatus in 2022, the Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka Triathlon Festival is back from Thursday, 16 February Saturday, 18 February 2023 and we are looking for volunteers to join our amazing Crombie Lockwood volunteer crew. We’re holding a volunteer information morning on Sunday, 27 November from 10.00am at Edgewater. This will be an opportunity to meet the Challenge Wanaka team, ask questions, and hear from regular volunteers to find out more about what’s involved in joining our fabulous volunteer crew. Coffee and pastries will be supplied! Volunteers are the heart and soul of the event and we’re currently on the lookout for anyone who is keen and eager to help deliver this exceptional event. Come and get involved in this incredibly fun community event with individuals of all ages getting together and celebrating all things skateboarding. Rotary Club of Wanaka Duck Race on this Saturday The race is on to discover who’s at the top of the pecking order at the Rotary Club of Wanaka’s annual duck race happening this Saturday, 12 November. The event begins at 10.00am with a front-loader dumping rubber ducks into Bullock Creek at the top of Dungarvon Street. From there they will be closely followed and cheered
on - especially by family groups - as they ‘wing’ their way on a down-river adventure to the Dinosaur Park.

The pluckiest ducks will take home cash prizes while the luckiest will scoop up spot prizes. Funds raised will go to the Rotary Club of Wanaka which will then be allocated to needy and worthwhile causes in the community.
Tickets will be available at the Dinosaur Park on race day. Saturday, 12 November from 9.30am. Tickets are $5 for public entries and $100 for corporate entries. Spectators line Bullock Creek for the annual Rotary Club of Wānaka Duck Race.

We’ve got a short fire watch for you this month, October was a reasonably quiet month for the brigade, with 11 calls attended.
One of these calls was a chimney fire that could have easily progressed to a house fire if not for the prompt action of the owners. If you suspect you’ve got a chimney fire, be quick to call 111 before things get out of control. Now the weather is warming up, although it doesn’t feel

like it right now, we’ll be out and about more in the community. We’ll see you at the QLDC Rainbow Run on November 25th and also at Alpha Challenge on December 3rd (where we’ll be in charge of the mud!).

Are you a natural born leader? Wanaka Scaffolding are seeking an Operations Manager to lead their team. Key to your success will be your proven experience in an operational leadership role, creating a high performing team and a focus on excellent customer service. You will be a true people leader with strong interpersonal skills to confidently lead, coach and motivate your team.
You will be an experienced Scaffolder and will have: • A great work ethic • Be a team player • Experience in, and the ability to install scaffolding to a high safety standard • The ability to maintain positive relationships within the team, and clients at all levels
You will have the ability to build trust, and maintain positive relationships with employees and customers. You will also have: • Experience and a passion for health, safety and the wellbeing of your team including employees and customers • Management experience within the construction industry • Scaffolding experience (but not essential) • Truck license (but not essential) • Excellent communication and relationship building skills
Scaffold Labourer You will be given full training and gain the skills and experience to grow your career within the industry. You will: • Have a great work ethic • Be a team player • Be happy to work alongside your team leader
