Melbourne Cup Day!

he Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust Melbourne Cup Day 6th November is fast approaching and Wanaka is invited to be a part of this exciting day to be held at The Lone Star Wanaka.

The Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust was set up in 2009 to support the children of Upper Clutha families who are finding it difficult to meet the costs of medical treatment. In that time it has helped over 50 families and made big differences to their lives.

Tickets are $30 which includes nibbles and a glass of bubbles or beer. Lone Star will be serving lunch from 12.00. Entry ticket is required.

The races from Ellerslie will be televised through out the restaurant and the Melbourne Cup will show at 5pm.

Bets are $2.00 and the Melbourne Cup is a $10.00 sweepstake.

For the first time this year watch our local celebrities compete in hobby horse races, and there will be a “Fashion on the Field” again - best lady, best man and best hat at 4pm.

Terry The Tarantula and Ruby The Red Back joined in the fun at Wanakafest last week. They were spotted at the street parade on Friday night and later were seen hitching a ride on a cardboard boat. The boat subsequently sank but experts do not expect foul play by spiders in this instance.

Ruby and Terry were none the worse for wear after their dip in the lake. Certain species of spider are able to walk or run on top of water. Some can even swim or dive while others have been known to stay underwater for up to half an hour.

That spiders actually quite like water is bad news for anyone whose idea of pest control is to flush them down the plug hole. For a better solution to a spider problem, call in the experts!

Proposal to change legal structure Wanaka Wastebusters proposes changing its legal structure from an Incorporated Society to a Limited Liability Company.

• The Incorporated Society legal structure is intended for membership-driven organisaƟons eg sports clubs.

• Wastebusters has evolved from a membership-driven organisaƟon to a signiĮcant trading organisaƟon.

Here is what the Wanaka police have been dealing with over the last week; We have been approached by the Federal Diner and they have advised us that a bench with metal legs was stolen from the rear of the establishment. Any information would be great.

Last Friday it came to our attention that a male has been stealing DVD's from the library, watching them and then returning them to the library with the security locking mechanism damaged. This is a classic scenario of one person spoiling it for everyone.

A caravan has had its window forced open at the Luggate camping ground. However it doesn't seem that entry was gained. We would be keen to get some info. on this one.

A cyclist was riding on State Highway 84 and he stopped to talk to a friend parked on the opposite side of the road. When he went to cross he did not see the oncoming vehicle and was hit.

I am pleased to report that the cyclist only suffered cuts and bruises from the impact but it could have been a lot worse. This is a classic example of the need to ensure you are visible on the roads. A set of good bicycle lights could be the best investment you could ever make.

A 99 year old male was knocked over in the car park at an elderly resident's home. The driver did not see him when she reversed out of the car park. I am pleased to report he received minor injuries and returned home from the medical centre that evening. Another lady was knocked over when reversed into by a vehicle parking on Dunmore St. If you have any information pertaining to the incidents above please call the station on (03) 443 7272 to speak to an Officer. Lastly, last week Wanaka Police incorrectly reported that local man Murray Rivers died as a result of drowning. It is ultimately the coroner's responsibility to determine the cause of death and the matter has been referred accordingly.
