SANTA’S GROTTO 2022

Another year has rolled around to bring us to the start of the festive season for 2022.

Your chance to lose yourself in all things Christmas!

All restrictions have been lifted, and as we go about life as normal as possible, this means Santa's Grotto 2022 will go ahead. Santa is visiting in person, with elves, Mrs Claus, and beautifully decorated Christmas trees to vote for. Fairy lights, new displays and mountains of magic and wonder for all young and old.

Come visit us at the Wanaka Community Hub again this year from Saturday, 3 to Sunday, 11 December. Our first session starts at 2.00pm on the 3 December.

Here is a brief summary of some of the incidents Wanaka Police have dealt with recently. A friendly reminder to those that enjoy riding dirt bikes that ripping up local parks is not ideal and can be dangerous with other park users around. Some good advice was handed out but next time it may be different.

Scammers continue to find ways to take our money. The website ‘Trade Me’ is a great marketplace but make sure you do your homework before handing over money. In another case please don’t transfer money without knowing where it is going. Check with your bank.

Taking illicit drugs is never a good idea. You don’t know what you’re buying, and it is constantly mixed with poisons. In a recent case somebody suffered a serious mental health issue after taking an unknown substance that they bought. The effects can be long lasting.

On Thursday emergency services dealt with a drowning in Lake Wanaka. Thanks to Coastguard and the Harbour master who assisted in recovering the body. Stay safe this summer around water and look out for each other.

Incidents on the road continue to increase as more people arrive in town. It’s great to have visitors but please everyone drive to the conditions and stay off the phones. We have taken a couple of vehicles off people that continue to

Warning to local businesses that fake ID's are around town. Please do those extra checks before handing over alcohol. We have recently attended a number of disorder events around Wanaka, along with groups of youth fighting, and it appears the weekend dance scene is picking up with groups heading into Department of Conservation areas to hold pop-up events. These types of events can be problematic for Police and we strongly advise coming and seeing us before deciding to run these. As a result, some assaults from events that have already taken place, have taken some time to investigate. We will find you and we will hold you accountable!!

Wanaka Planeswalkers

Magic: The Gathering players now have an opportunity to play socially and regularly in Wanaka. Wanaka Planeswalkers has been set up to let locals join the estimated thirty-five million players worldwide who play the game they love.

Released in 1993, it is fitting that, as it celebrates its 30 th year of play, locals get a chance to play Magic regularly. All versions of the games will be played, but the most popular format, Commander/EDH, allowing 2-4 players to battle with their own ‘decks’, will be the main gameplay at the initial evenings. Magic is renowned for its inclusivity, so absolutely everyone is welcome. There is no cost to come and play.

Become scam savvy

Cyber security attacks “scams” are becoming more and more common, and many seniors are at risk because technology in many ways is new to them. It is also becoming increasingly difficult to engage with services, pay bills, apply for help, in fact do much at all if you don’t have access to and the ability to use technology.

Cert NZ Reported Scams and fraud accounted for almost $12 million (69%) of the total financial loss reported in New Zealand in 2020. Of that loss, almost $5.4 million was lost to unauthorised or falsified money transactions. This amount continues to rise with a higher than 12% increase in scams so far in 2022.
