BELONGING MATTERS: EVENTS FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH Over 60 free events planned this October Community Link is inviting Upper Clutha residents to get involved in Mental Health Awareness Month this October, with more than 60 free events designed to strengthen wellbeing through connection, participation and a sense of belonging. The 2026 theme, Belonging Matters, focuses on the small, everyday moments that help people feel included, supported and connected to their community. The programme includes a range of activities, from community walks, yoga sessions and fitness classes to panel discussions, workshops and wellbeing talks. Organisers say the variety is intentional, ensuring there is something for people of all ages, interests and abilities. Mental Health Awareness Month organiser

Keity said creating opportunities for connection is at the heart of the programme. “Belonging doesn’t have to come from big events or grand gestures. Often it’s the simple things, like joining a walk, trying a new activity or meeting someone new, that help people feel connected and supported,” she said.

While many of the events will be held in Wānaka, the programme aims to benefit communities across the wider Upper Clutha. “Whether you’re looking to learn something new, get active, meet people or simply spend time with others, we hope everyone can find a way to be involved,” said Keity. The Mental Health Awareness Month programme is available on the Wānaka App and the Community Link website.

Wānaka junior cricketers ready to hit the pitch
Wānaka Junior Cricket Club is gearing up for another action packed season, with registrations now open for both junior and youth grades. With spring settling in across the region, the club is calling on families to get their young cricketers signed up early for what promises to be a vibrant and well supported 2026/27 season. The programme offers structured, age appropriate cricket that balances skill development with the fun and camaraderie local families have come to expect. Junior divisional grade cricket, for school years 4–8, runs on Saturday mornings in a T20 or T25 hardball format, giving players regular game time and a chance to grow their confidence.
Youth grade cricket, for school years 9–10, continues the pathway with Saturday afternoon fixtures in a combination of T20 and T35 formats. The season runs from 31 October to 12 December, before resuming from 30 January to 13 March. Club organisers say new faces are always welcome and encourage parents to register before the 18 October deadline to secure a spot. Registration links and further details are available at wanakacricketclub.co.nz/ juniorclub, with the club looking forward to welcoming players back onto the pitch for another successful season. Community invited to shape The Election Conversation
Major party leaders and local representatives from across New Zealand’s political spectrum will come together in Wānaka on Tuesday, 27 October, for The Election Conversation, part of Wao Summit 2026. Hosted by Wao in collaboration with the Wānaka Business Chamber, the evening at Rippon Hall will put community and business questions at the centre of the discussion. Wao invites people across the Southern Lakes to submit the questions and issues they want candidates to address. The aim is to create space for people to hear directly
from those seeking to represent them, understand different positions and perspectives, and make up their own minds ahead of the election. The evening follows the opening day of Wao Summit 2026, Resilience in Action, and will form part of a wider programme exploring the environmental, social, economic and community decisions shaping our future. Doors open from 5.30pm for drinks, Wao platters and Camilla Rutherford’s photography exhibition before the conversation begins at 6.30pm. Submitted by Wao Aotearoa

Mental Health
AWARENESS MONTH
Belonging Matters Let’s Come Together Wānaka! This October, Community Link and our many local partners invite you to join us for a full month of activities, workshops, and events that shine a light on mental wellbeing. Mental health is just as important as physical health. It affects how we think, feel, and connect with others. And when we nurture our wellbeing, we nurture the wellbeing of the whole community.
Whether it’s a quiet moment with a book, a reflective walk by the lake, learning new tools in a workshop, or getting your hands in the soil as a volunteer - there’s something here for everyone. For full details of individual events see Wānaka App, communitylink.co.nz or Community Link Facebook events.

That’s why we’re offering more than the traditional Mental Health Awareness Week - with opportunities right through October to connect, learn, and recharge.
We’d like to thank our supporters of this years programme.

POLICE ARE MAKING ENQUIRIES following a report that a male allegedly entered a property on Russell Street without authority overnight on 17 September. POLICE ARE ALSO INVESTIGATING the theft of a high-value bicycle from Gordon Road, reported on 18 September 2026. POLICE ARRESTED A MALE on 19 September, for allegedly breaching the conditions of his bail. He was taken into custody and has appeared in Queenstown District Court. POLICE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES responded to a medical event on Mt Iron on Sunday, 20 September. Police would like to thank the members of the public who assisted at the scene and provided support during the incident. POLICE ARE REMINDING the public to remain vigilant following ongoing reports of online and social media scams. Facebook Marketplace remains a common platform used by offenders, with reports of people paying for goods that are never received. POLICE ENCOURAGE ANYONE purchasing goods or services online to exercise caution, particularly when dealing with private sellers through social media platforms. The public is advised to be wary of requests for direct bank transfers, avoid purchasing from newly created or suspicious accounts, and take steps to independently verify the legitimacy of sellers before making any payment. IF YOU RECEIVE A CALL FROM SOMEONE claiming to represent your bank, hang up and contact your bank directly using a trusted phone number. Anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to a scam should contact their bank immediately and report the matter to Police via 105. Information relating to scam activity can also be reported to Netsafe at netsafe.org.nz. POLICE HAVE ALSO RECEIVED REPORTS of damage being caused to election campaign hoardings. Police remind the public that intentionally damaging or interfering with property is an offence. Respectful and lawful behaviour is expected throughout the election period. Anyone with information about damage to election signage is encouraged to report it to Police by calling 105 or making a report online at 105. POLICE RESPONDED TO A SERIOUS motor vehicle crash at Dip Creek, Lindis Valley, on Friday, 18 September. The crash involved a vehicle and a campervan. The occupants of the vehicles suffered significant injuries, with one person airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition. DANGEROUS DRIVING CAN BE REPORTED to Police via 111 if there is an immediate threat to public safety. Alternatively, reports can be made via 105, either online or by phone. POLICE ARE ENCOURAGING anyone planning to head into the high country, or those intending to use local lakes and rivers around Wānaka and the wider Southern Lakes region, to carefully assess conditions and ensure they are well prepared before setting out. AS DAYLIGHT HOURS INCREASE and temperatures begin to warm, Police expect to see more people enjoying the region’s outdoor environments. However, weather, water, and track conditions in alpine and remote areas can change rapidly, creating challenging and potentially hazardous situations. WHILE OUTDOOR RECREATION is an important part of life in the Southern Lakes, avoidable incidents can place both those requiring assistance and emergency responders at significant risk. NEW ZEALAND POLICE NON-EMERGENCY. Use the online report options to make a non-emergency report, or you can call us on 105 (TEN-FIVE) 24/7. If it’s happening now, or someone’s in danger, call 111 (TRIPLE-ONE).
