NEW FUNDRAISING COOKBOOK FOR WANAKA PRIMARY

Wānaka Primary School has launched a professionally produced family cookbook to raise funds for the school. The cookbook – entitled Bite: Mountain munches, lakeside lunches and everything in between – features more than 100 recipes contributed by friends and family of Wānaka Primary. The book is on sale from 1 November for $45 at the Mediterranean Market and other participating Wānaka retailers. It can also be purchased by emailing cookbook@wanaka.school.nz Wānaka Primary School Principal, Dr Wendy Bamford says "100 per cent of the proceeds from sales of the high-quality cookbook will go towards purchasing resources for the school’s seven new 'Maker Spaces'. These dedicated practical learning areas range from cooking, woodwork and sewing spaces to electronics, IT and innovation stations.
These pragmatic learning spaces provide important life skills, encourage independence and are loads of fun for the children,” she says. “We are so lucky to have these facilities at our school.” Thirty-three generous local businesses came on board as sponsors of the cookbook and the school hopes to raise at least $35,000 to purchase specialised Maker Spaces equipment for the long-term benefit of children in the Wānaka community. “We now have the printed cookbook finally in our hands and we are absolutely thrilled with the result,” she says. “We are very grateful to our generous sponsors, as well as the parent volunteers who worked hard over six months to create this fantastic book. "We hope that the community will also support this fundraising project and enjoy this unique collection of tried-and-true Wānaka recipes.”

So, here’s a roundup of your Police’s activities this past week. Unfortunately, the week held a few family harm episodes which were attended by Police resulting in referrals to external agencies for help. Many of these services are accessible through the Wanaka Community Hub on McDougall Street and are there for help to everyone. Again, potential Facebook frauds, with people paying for expensive items without any face to face checks or back up contacts, are still an issue with reports of these continuing to come to our attention. Please folks, your money is hard worked for so give a bit more of a check before parting with it over the internet. Road Policing has been a major focus for us over the long weekend, with staff being deployed to ensure everyone got to where they needed to go, and back again safely. At the time of writing this, we have had a relatively incident free weekend on the roads apart from many reports of poor driving which have been dealt with by way of infringement notices, or education for the driver. Once again, a gentle reminder that the speed limit around Wanaka is 40 kph. You can find this out quite easily as there are signs, usually round with a red circle around the outside and big black 40 in the middle. They are everywhere you just need to look. They do apply to everyone! While on the subject of road safety and with the nights now well and truly drawing out with daylight for longer, you do still require lights on your bike once the streetlights come on. Also, we are noticing a drop off in cycle helmet wearing as well. It is no good having it on your arm or clipped to your handlebars, it is designed for your head so please wear it. We are still having a quantity of lost property handed in to us. This ranges from bicycle wheels, wallets, children’s bags, and other items. So, if you have lost anything like this please call in as we may well have it and would love to give it back to you. And while speaking of property, we did have a report of a bag which had been left by a person by the trees at the skate park being taken by someone else. Again, a plea to keep an eye on your property and don’t leave it unattended as it only puts temptation in the path of others. Finally, as the weather gets warmer, we are getting calls about people using pools, mainly the Albert Town Community Pool, outside hours and without paying. Normally younger people so if this is you please abide by the rules, otherwise it tends to lead to a call to us and me having to get my speedos on, and nobody wants that.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS BIKEVEMBER is back this November! Bikevember is returning this year, championing how we move in a month-long celebration of cycling. A series of events are planned, running alongside the ‘Get SMART, Get MOVING’ campaign and in partnership with Wao Aotearoa, Bike Wanaka and the Wanaka Community Workshop. Bikevember is a month dedicated to encouraging the community to get on their bike, give biking a go, share the love for cycling and move more sustainably around Wanaka. Cycling for more of our shorter journeys helps to protect our community biodiversity. Less noise, less air pollution, greater community health, and of course fewer emissions. So let’s move together on our bikes this November!
Key events during the month include two fundamental bike maintenance sessions run by JRA Bicycle Co. in partnership with the Wanaka Community Workshop. There will be social rides and fun events suitable for the whole family and Big Bike Film Night is sure to be a highlight! And at the end of the month there will be a community BBQ and the official opening of the new Kirimoko trails. Dedicate this November to your bike! Please help the Grebes of Wanaka
They are now extinct in the North Island. The programme is managed by a retired zoologist. Since 2013 over 340 chicks have been fledged from artificial nest sites close to the boat Marina in Roys Bay. The best time to see the Grebes is from September to February.
The sculptures are on display at The Community Hub, 34 McDougall Street where they can be viewed and a silent offer can be made before 30 November 2021, by leaving your name, contact details and offer on the form provided.
All fieldwork is voluntary, however the floating nests are expensive to build, costing approximately $400 each plus maintenance every two years.
