The Messenger is turning 44! As we celebrate another year of informing and supporting the community, it is a wonderful time to reflect on the impact The Messenger has had in our community over the last 44 years. What started out as a 1 page community diary, is now on average a 40 page magazine with community news, community diary, advertisements, jobs, accommodation, vehicles, and everything in-between. With a rejuvenated confidence, we can look forward to a really positive year ahead and look forward to continuing to help by keeping our community connected. Thanks for your continued support, we are all in this together.

Best wishes from The Messenger team.

CRIME LINE

It's that time again for the weekly roundup of what your local team in blue have been up to.

Bit of a mixed bag this week with it being the lead up to the long weekend. You may have seen a few more Police cars on the road in the lead up. We are trying very hard to keep everyone safe so an enjoyable time could be had by all and everyone gets to go home at the end of the day.

Obviously not everyone looks at road safety in this manner, hence the young persons stopped, and a drug search completed on the car they were in. The passenger was in possession of a bong for smoking cannabis, meanwhile the driver was impairment tested for driving under the influence of a drug. We are awaiting the results of the blood test to determine if a charge is going to be forthcoming or not. One more young person was issued an infringement notice for a low-level breath result after being stopped while driving, but apart from that no other drink driving apprehensions this week which is very pleasing.

A few crashes this week but fortunately no one badly injured, however it is suspected one bug suffered a fatal injury after it flew into the eye of a driver who then crashed her van as a result. A crash occurred at the State Highway 84 Riverbank Road intersection when a vehicle pulled out of Riverbank Road after having vision obscured by a large truck turning into Riverbank Road. Moral of the story is always check and double check if the road is clear before you pull out. Not only cars can be obscured but certainly motorcycles and cycles, so take the extra second and

Tuesday night Wanaka staff assisted both Cromwell and Alexandra staff with a driver of a Ute who decided to smash down multiple road signs, rubbish bins and road markers between Wanaka and Cromwell. When confronted at an address he was trespassed from he rammed two Police vehicles and sped off. After the damage rampage he turned into Pisa Moorings where he crashed and then assaulted a person who attempted to assist him. Again, confronted by Police he threw rocks at Police and a Police vehicle before running off again. He was eventually tracked by a Police dog which had been called from Dunedin. He was taken into custody and

On Saturday night a male wanted in relation to several shoplifting offences at a local supermarket was apprehended and charged. He has a date with the Judge in Queenstown to explain his actions. With the nights well and truly drawn out now and the weather getting better, it has been noticed that there are quite a few people of all ages taking advantage and getting out and about on their bikes. With that please remember the rules, a cycle helmet has been a legal requirement since 1st January 1994 in New Zealand and lights have been required on bikes since at least 1976. So, if we stop you for one of these reasons, please don’t say you

Well, let’s hope this weather continues, although we could probably do with a bit of rain for the garden, and everyone is able to get out and enjoy this great area we live in.

So, until next time stay safe Wanaka.

Volunteer for the Cardrona Adaptive Snow Sports Programme

The Cardrona Adaptive Snow Sports Programme would like to thank all volunteers who dedicated their time this winter season to assist with running the program.

With more than 320 sessions being delivered by volunteers, the programme has seen one of its busiest seasons ever. This is a team effort, however, we’d like to highlight and recognise a few of our volunteers who have gone above and beyond with their commitment to help:

Tomas Cervenka 31 days, Julian Warren 31 days, Lois Martin 27 days, Ichen Hsieh 20 days, Murray Walker and Alison Jarvis 18 days

Snow Sports New Zealand works hard to find funding for adaptive snow sports equipment to supply our adaptive programme, however, this is not always easy. Adaptive equipment is very costly, a new sitski for example, can

cost up to $15,000. This is where we need your help. Your donation helps us keep equipment current and in good state. If you would like to make a donation, please donate to SSNZ 02-0560-0256960-00 Reference: CAD or contact adaptive@cardrona.com for further information.

Wānaka Craft Beer Advent Calendar Fundraiser

Wānaka’s craft beer scene is thriving with some of the best brews in the country here on our doorstep and has been recognised as one of the best in the country with many accolades to show for it. Wānaka locals have known for a long time how good we have it, but this year there’s another reason to love our local breweries as they collaborate to create Wānaka’s first ever Craft Beer Advent Calendar.

A mixed case of 24 craft beers from the teams at Wanaka Beerworks, Ground Up, Rhyme x Reason and b.effect will provide a new local beer each day in December in the countdown to Christmas. The advent

Support for Wanaka’s future snow athletes

Wanaka Snowsports Club will be holding an auction to fundraise for Wanaka’s future Olympians, World Cup and Freeride World Tour athletes, that will run until November 13th. Auction items include some incredible and priceless opportunities including Zoi Sadowski-Synnott’s Olympic and X Games Gold Medal winning snowboard (signed), days riding with Jess Hotter, Ben Richards, Ben Barclay and Piera Hudson, and Cardrona season passes as well as some everyday items, like lawn mowing, fitness programmes, holiday accommodation and Lego.

Wanaka is fast earning a reputation for producing some of New Zealand’s top athletes.

Already WSC athletes include Beijing 2022 Winter Olympians, FIS competitors, World Cup and Junior World Cup athletes. The funds raised from events like this auction can help to ease the financial burden of Northern Hemisphere travel and allow athletes to put their energy into training and competing.

Don’t miss out. Get some great items and at the same time support our future athletes.

The auction will be held online.

Additionally we invite the community to celebrate with us and meet some of the athletes the auction will support. Join us at Hello Ranger, 6.00 - 9.00pm. We will run a small live auction. Bring cash for a fun raffle. Bar will be open for drinks and food.

calendar is a fundraising initiative with all profits being donated to Wānaka Search and Rescue.

“Wānaka SAR chair Aaron Nicholson said “Wānaka SAR is wholly dependent on grants and donations to allow our volunteers to be properly trained and equipped. Getting this sort of support from a local industry - especially one many of us are pretty keen on - is a great Christmas present as we approach the search and rescue busy season.”

The Wānaka Craft Beer Advent Calendar is available to buy through the breweries’ websites now and will be available to collect from 14th November.
