Elders Livestock The Millenium Walkway on the Lakefront
T
he Wanaka Residents Association is an incorporated society which meets monthly to consider issues affecting the town. As well as monitoring and submitting on the resource consent applications which we consider to have community-wide planning implications, we use our QLDC community grant for projects which enhance community amenities. In 2011 we worked with the Council to fund repair and improvement of the tiles on the lakefront Millennium Walkway. We also lobbied the QLDC regarding the on-going problem of
algae in the town water supply and the speed humps at the lakefront. Any Wanaka resident or ratepayer can join the association for an annual subscription of $10, which can be forwarded (with your contact details) to The Secretary, PO Box 723, Wanaka. If you would like to hear more about our activities in 2011 and our plans for 2012 you are welcome to attend our Annual General Meeting which will be held on Thursday 26 January, 7.30pm at the Armstrong Room of the Lake Wanaka Centre.

Well Challenge Wanaka is over and seemed to be another huge success with the event becoming more and more polished each year. In particular the Albert Town bridge congestion was cured by diverting the cyclists along the bridge walkway. The powers to be are now looking at the Luggate Bridge options to cure that one also. A few of us at the station competed and enjoyed the day immensely. It is a great week for us work wise with people in town so happy to be here. Wanaka is full of fit healthy people who spend a lot of money at the eateries and there is a distinct lack of drunken behaviour considering the number of people here. Cyclists expressed to me how well behaved motorists were and this makes us very happy. However we did have some issues involving drunks having nothing to do with Challenge this week. This included a local male who refused to leave a party and when Police were called to assist his poor behaviour resulted in him spending the night in the cells and an up and coming court appearance. We had a vehicle reported unlawfully taken from McDougall Street on Monday night in a domestic dispute. On Thursday a local motorist was processed for drink driving on State Highway SH84. In the early hours of Saturday somebody has thrown a bottle into the Lakeview Camping ground hitting a 1953 Chevrolet denting it. For what purpose I have no idea! Sunday night we had a vehicle damaged when it’s front windscreen was smashed at the public car park on Pembroke Park... what joy would somebody get out of damaging someone’s property? If you are reading this and are responsible for damaging someone else’s property you need to take a very good look at yourself in the mirror. We have had a return of the male exposing himself to females in town. On Saturday and Monday mornings a male in his 30’s was seen on the Albert Town side of the Mount Iron track. Another incident was reported of similar nature on Monday night when a male in his 30’s confronted a female in the Ardmore Street car park opposite the Doughbin. The male was masturbating with his trousers around his knees as he approached her. If you see anything like this grab your phone, or the phone of the next person who passes, and call us immediately before this disturbed person harms somebody. Well that pretty much wraps up the points of note for the weeks work so enjoy the sun. Be friendly to your neighbour and Stay Classy Wanaka.
