The NZ Mountain Film and Book Festival is on this week in Wanaka, from June 25 to 29 (with films online June 25 to July 25). The 19th annual event presents a wide range of films, guest speakers, workshops and presentations from inspirational adventurers. This year there are some women filmmakers and adventurers who tell some special stories in the Women in Adventure session on Sunday, 27 June. ‘Women in Adventure’ features Tara Mulvany. The Women in Adventure session kicks off with a presentation from Tara Mulvany. Tara circumnavigated both Stewart Island and the North Island alone by sea kayak and was part of a small team that completed the first-ever kayak circumnavigation of Svalbard in the high Arctic, often while being chased by polar bears.
Tara Mulvany will be speaking about her most recent adventure, a solo traverse of the Southern Alps this past summer. Women in Adventure Films. An incredible set of films follow Tara’s talk. Katherine’s Marathon by Director Nicolas Falquet won the Best Climbing Film Award. Katherine Choong is leading the way in climbing and narrowing the gap between men and women in the sport. This inspiring film follows Katherine’s latest climbing project. Kakapo Crest by Director Olivia Page follows four women who hike deep into remote Fiordland in search of a sabre-like peak. They battle through vertical scrub, gale-force storms and dangerously loose rock. A medley of short films completes the evening.
