While warmer days and lighter evenings are on the horizon, spring also heralds the start of the annual Wao Summit, a six-day event aimed at mainstreaming sustainability and fostering diversity. The event is in its fourth year, and seeks to encourage social and environmental change both here in Wānaka and around the country. Co-founder Arna Craig has confirmed the programme will continue regardless of our Covid Alert Level. “The pandemic might be front page news, but that doesn't mean we care any less about our planet. In fact, having real-time, tangible results such as the lowering of carbon emissions due to multiple global lockdowns has resulted in greater engagement with climate action,” she said. New Zealanders are starting to recognise that something has to change and they are also understanding that
small, collective steps can make a significant difference,” Craig added. The Summit, which offers a 360 degree approach to regenerative change, offers over 40 different kōrero, workshops, films and tours at every Level. Should the country remain at Alert Level 2, Wao (which translates as forest in Māori) will simply move to a hybrid event, with both an online and live programme. The charitable trust has already implemented a detailed infrastructure to ensure that the value remains. At Level 3 or 4 the Wao Summit will be held entirely online.
