While warmer days and lighter evenings are on the horizon, spring also heralds the start of the annual Wao Summit, a six-day event aimed at mainstreaming sustainability and fostering diversity. The event is in its fourth year, and seeks to encourage social and environmental change both here in Wānaka and around the country. Co-founder Arna Craig has confirmed the programme will continue regardless of our Covid Alert Level. “The pandemic might be front page news, but that doesn't mean we care any less about our planet. In fact, having real-time, tangible results such as the lowering of carbon emissions due to multiple global lockdowns has resulted in greater engagement with climate action,” she said. New Zealanders are starting to recognise that something has to change and they are also understanding that
small, collective steps can make a significant difference,” Craig added. The Summit, which offers a 360 degree approach to regenerative change, offers over 40 different kōrero, workshops, films and tours at every Level. Should the country remain at Alert Level 2, Wao (which translates as forest in Māori) will simply move to a hybrid event, with both an online and live programme. The charitable trust has already implemented a detailed infrastructure to ensure that the value remains. At Level 3 or 4 the Wao Summit will be held entirely online. For 15 years now Lindis Pass Conservation Group has been carrying out weed control in the Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve.

When you next drive through and enjoy the magnificent sweep of tall tussock over the rhythm of spur and gully, do send a thought to the group. Without their effort, the Pass landscape would be riddled with brier like the country to the north and south of it; and patched with dreaded lupin, an escaped garden plant that smothers native flowers and splashes the tawny landscape with hard colour.
This is nature’s slow way of resetting a balance. To assist nature, seed is collected each summer and young snow tussocks grown up to plant back into the Reserve each autumn as “islands” in the bared areas.
Broom, wilding pines and Hieracium are also in the group’s sights.

Sheep grazing on the tall tussocklands is seen by some as the way to control the High Country scourge of grey mats of Hieracium daisy. But in the Scenic Reserve, seedling snow tussocks and grasses are now growing through it. If left to thrive they will shade it out.
More volunteers are urgently needed to carry on the work of the group. A workday is held each month on a weekend, weather permitting. Gear is provided and rides are available.

A petrol drive off from a local service station is resulting in further inquiries, as a registration number was taken and the driver has been named. Hopefully this will be resolved quickly.

A trespass notice was issued to a homeowner who was becoming very frustrated with contractors working on a property beside his until early evening. We know the lockdown had knock on effects re timings for building and such, but with that in mind, tradies you also need to be aware of how much noise pollution can be caused on site and how frustrating it can be for those living beside it. A timely reminder also this week of how road conditions can change and how becoming distracted while driving can have severe consequences. Police had to humanely destroy a deer which had been hit by a vehicle on the Lake Häwea-Albert Town highway on Thursday night, with evidence of 2 other deer also having been hit in the same area. So, watch your speed and watch out for stock on the road, they don’t have much in the way of road sense. On Saturday a driver had a very lucky escape after becoming distracted while driving on SH6 near the Wānaka Airport, losing control of her vehicle. The vehicle rolled approximately 5 times before a fence post entered the vehicle. She sustained no injuries and may have used up all her luck towards a lotto win but walked away. Police have been kept busy with more Family Harm incidents this week, with a range of actions from warnings to arrests being made. Please remember there is help there and always available. Please contact the Wānaka Community Hub to be put in touch with agencies which can help when times get tough. Now that we are in Level 2, remember mask wearing is mandatory in many places, shops, supermarkets, and other areas where potential interaction with others may occur. So, if you are asked to put a mask on by a staff member of that establishment, it is because it is a mandatory requirement. It is not a slur on you personally, but is a requirement to prevent any spread of the disease. An “I forgot it” or “it’s in the car I won’t be long” doesn’t cut it. We all need to do our part to stop this disease unless Level 4 looks good again to people. Your behaviour matters, so please do the right thing. Finally, there was an extreme act of vandalism on two tiny houses, and a van which was parked at the Hikuwai Estate over the last week. Both houses have been destroyed beyond any form of liveability, with thousands of dollars of damage done. A van in the area has also been extensively damaged. Forensic investigations are underway to identify the culprits and hopefully gain reparation to the owners for the damage. If you have any information around this, Police would like to hear from you. Have you had enough of QLDC yet?
Is it time to give Queenstown the chop? Add your name to the petition for the Upper Clutha to break away from Queenstown Lakes District Council (started by Dean Rankin) You may have read in the news or online that there is a petition for Wānaka, Hawea and the Upper Clutha to break away from QLDC. The petition already has enough signatures for the Local Government Commission to start an investigation, but we want to send a very clear message to QLDC and to the Commission that we have had enough. Add your name to over 1,700 people who have had enough. This will trigger a process where we get to look at options (without QLDC!).
If you are a ratepayer here, or you’re on the electoral roll in the Upper Clutha, you can add your name to the petition. Please take a few moments to do this, and encourage others to do so too. If you have internet access, sign up at www.bit.ly/byeQLDC Otherwise, call our lovely volunteers on 03 443 5661, or you can call or text on 027 246 7835 and they will type your details directly into the online form. What happens next? Well, we send the petition to the Local Government Commission, and they are required by law to start an investigation into options. At that stage, people in the community can get involved in working on some of the detail, share their views, and we can all look at options, and make sensible decisions as a community. Why is this necessary? We all know that decision makers in Queenstown tend to favour Queenstown with better facilities, more budget allocation, higher priority and decisions which are great for Queenstown and tend to be bad for those of us in the Upper Clutha. This is our way of finding a better form of local government for the Upper Clutha. An Upper Clutha Council? Join with Cromwell? Something else? Who knows, but it’s got to be better than this! Let’s send a message to Jim Boult, some councillors who don’t look out for the Upper Clutha and the council executive. Enough is enough.
