WĀNAKA TRAIL RIDE IS BACK FOR 2023

One of the South’s best-loved off-road events, the Wānaka Trail Ride is back after a year's hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions. The event returns on 1 April, with exciting updates to the trails, and a few new changes to satisfy riders of all abilities.

The highlight of this year's event is the opportunity for riders to rip into the new loop sections built in 2021 but not ridden in 2022 due to the cancellation. These new sections feature expert and advanced terrain that will test even the most seasoned riders. The trails team has been working hard to get the tracks ready - including a few updates to the advanced/expert loops for 2023.

The Wānaka Trail Ride is a major fundraiser for Wānaka Primary School and Montessori Children’s House Wānaka and promises to deliver plenty of family-friendly fun. Junior riders can take on the free pee wee track, novices will love the beginner trails, and more experienced riders can challenge themselves with advanced and expert trails.

This year, the event has partnered with the Wānaka Lions Club to provide catering throughout the day. Riders can tuck into a range of hot food and beverages to refuel after enjoying the trails.

Wānaka Trail Ride takes place Saturday, 1 April near Tarras. Early bird tickets are on sale nowtickets are $55 for adults (16 years plus) and $20 for juniors. Book at www.wanakatrailride.org

Biological Control: The risks, bene ts and challenges

Biological control is a natural phenomenon, but pest management using natural enemies has been used for over 3000 years, with Chinese farmers recognising they could reduce the impact of orchard pests by transferring predatory ant nests to their trees.

In her talk, Barbara will describe the recent history of biological control and, in particular, the rise in interest in biosafety aspects. This followed a groundswell of concerns about potential harmful ecological impacts.

After a period of intense controversy, it was generally accepted that pre-release risk assessment for biocontrol agents should be a requirement, and many regulatory agencies throughout the world have legislated accordingly. Barbara’s work in the multi-agency research collaboration ‘Better Border Biosecurity’ focuses on risk assessment for intentional introduction of biological control agents. She will describe research by the team to support decisions of the Environmental Protection Authority and of DOC who

evaluate the risk to the conservation estate.

Barbara Barratt is a principal Scientist at AgResearch in the Resilient Agriculture Group. She is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Otago based in the Department of Botany, where she helps supervise postgraduate students in the Botany and Zoology Departments.

Barbara graduated with a BSc and PhD from the Department of Zoology at the University of Durham in the northeast of England, and after arriving in Dunedin took up a post-doc position with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries at Invermay Research Centre. Barbara’s research focuses on biosafety of biological control, biosecurity risks to natural ecosystems and natural grassland community ecology. In 2021 Barbara was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.

The leaves are starting to turn and the nights are getting colder, but we’re not out of the woods yet! My father in law reckons this has been the driest summer he can remember, and we’ve got heaps of dry fuel stacked up around still ready to go up.

The good news is that if this rain persists we’re likely to come to the end of our re ban in the next couple of weeks, and so far ( ngers crossed!) we’ve had a good run of things, with only small vegetation res to deal with.

Thanks for all your help keeping the community safe.

The love of gold runs through our veins just as it runs through the quartz veins of Otago schist. Driven by rapid rising inflation, higher interest rates, and unexpected geopolitical risk gold is once again king of the hill.

Uncertainty in the US banking system, Gold once again is amongst the best performing assets, amidst significant weakness in both equity and bond markets. In a period marked by increased economic uncertainty and increased volatility, gold and silver are again proving a reliable source of diversification and wealth preservation.

“Gold has historically performed well amid high inflation,” says Jerome Concisom, CEO of Commonwealth Vault Christchurch.

“In years when inflation has been higher than 3 percent, gold’s price increased on average 14 percent.

Commonwealth Vault is delighted to help anyone who is interested in purchasing gold and silver products, with a good range to choose from. The company also offers an extensive range of safe deposit boxes for silver and gold. Our purchasers usually also store with us for complete peace of mind. Most people are not aware that household insurance generally does not cover gold storage at home. Purchase and storage with us is simple and safe” says Jerome.

Paris Mint coins are now available to purchase, right here in Christchurch at the Commonwealth Vault.

22nd March 2023 We make buying Gold & Silver easy!
