Wanaka’s most anticipated business event returns this year with some exciting new changes and an element of mystery. The countdown to the biennial Ignite Wanaka Business Awards in partnership with Milford Asset Management has begun, with entries to the 2019 awards now open. This year’s prestigious local Business Awards sees the announcement of a new category, new judge and new convenor of the independent judging panel. The glitzy gala dinner will also be held at a secret location, which is expected to further increase interest towards the popular event. The independent judging panel, comprising four highprofile and successful local business people, will be headed by new convenor Wayne Hudson. Former Queenstown Chamber of Commerce CEO Ann Lockhart, who lives in the Cardrona Valley, is the judging panel’s

newest addition. Hudson and Lockhart are joined by returning judges Mark Verbiest and Anne Urlwin. “The Ignite Wanaka Business Awards is a great way of getting the business community together to celebrate success,” Hudson says. “Entering the Awards give businesses the chance to think about what they do well, where they’re going and how they intend to make a difference. Past finalists and category winners have genuinely benefitted by the opportunity – not only have people loved being involved in the process, it has boosted their confidence and further improved the possibility of business and personal success.” Entries close at 5pm on Monday 21 October, 2019 and finalists will be announced at the Ignite Wanaka Chamber AGM on November 6. HANDS OFF BULLOCK CREEK! OPEN LETTER TO QLDC

Over the past year, Friends of Bullock Creek (FOBC) have been highlighting to Council the storm water and flood risks from the Alpha Series and the more recent Studholme subdivisions above the creek catchment. Unfortunately, QLDC has given consent for the creek to be used for stormwater discharge. A recent peer review by a firm of consulting engineers commissioned by QLDC has confirmed the Alpha Series subdivision storm water management and drainage system is not working as designed. (Beca Report dated 24 July 2019). Despite meetings and discussions with QLDC, the risk remains.

QUESTIONS TO QLDC 1.

Since the stormwater engineering drainage system installed on the Alpha Series subdivision has been found by Beca to be not working, what steps are being taken to ensure that, until a permanent solution is found, contaminated storm water does not enter Bullock Creek?

When will QLDC make the Beca Report public?

Who will be accountable and held responsible for any environmental and/or ecological damage to Bullock Creek?

Who will be accountable and held responsible for any private property and infrastructure damage caused by stormwater runoff from the Alpha Series and Studholme subdivisions as a consequence of a major weather event resulting in the highly probable extensive flooding along the length of Bullock creek?

When will QLDC update the 2008 Aurecon Flood Hazard map which shows the Bullock Creek catchment flood risk prior to these recent subdivision? Is their map availale to the public?

Will the new consented discharge flows be incorporated into a new Aurecon Flood Hazard map? And made publically available?

BULLOCK CREEK IS TOO IMPORTANT NOT TO BE PROTECTED. WHAT TO DO: •

Email current Mayor Jim Boult and QLDC Chief Executive Mike Theelen and tell them to do more to protect Bullock Creek.

•

Ask candidates for QLDC Council, the Wanaka Community Board and the Otago Regional Council what they intend to do to ensure Bullock Creek is protected and the Wanaka town is not at increased risk of flooding due to stormwater runoff.

•

Join Friends of Bullock Creek to help us continue our conservation and protection work and our advocacy for Bullock Creek to be preserved as a spring fed creek, not turned into a major storm water drain by new developments

This year the book sale will take place over three days commencing Friday 29 November and ending on Sunday 1 December. The Rotary Club is actively preparing for the sale which involves cataloguing and pricing books. While the Club has a large store

of books from previous sales they are always looking for new ones. “It’s an opportunity for people to have a bit of a spring clean by giving books they don’t need anymore, knowing they are going to a worthwhile cause,” said Rotary Club of Wanaka President Deb Budden. “Proceeds from the sale go back into the community.” Books can be dropped off at Mitre 10 Wanaka or call 027 432 9243 and the Rotary Club will arrange pick up.

Local physiotherapy clinic Central Lakes Physio and the Aspiring Rotary Club are organising their second Pinc and Steel annual fundraiser on Sunday 29th September at 10am (9.30am to register and pay). Their aim is to raise $3000 to allow local people to access Pinc and Steel Cancer Rehabilitation. This service provides people with an individualised rehabilitation programme to help improve function and quality of life after a cancer diagnosis. There is no government funding for cancer rehabilitation and more and more people are surviving cancer but are often left with impairments, many of which can be improved with help from a cancer trained physiotherapist. Central Lakes Physio has been providing this programme for several years but with more and more people requiring the service, funding has been running low.

The Aspiring Rotary and Central Lakes Physio are hoping this year’s event will be even bigger and better than last year, which had over 100 people enter. It will be a casual and fun walk or run, with no obligation to do the whole 5km. There will be music, food and fun at the Rotary BBQ/Playground afterwards. Kia Ora koutou. Well the full moon seemed to play its part over the weekend with us attending an increase of the unusual jobs this week. Some say the moon has no effect but from what I have seen so many times I believe otherwise. A male was spoken to after he was located urinating on a car in a ski field car park. The owner of the vehicle was offended by coming across this behaviour especially in front of his children but the male did not stop even after being asked to do so. He then urinated on the neighbouring vehicle and left. No surprise that he was arrested for his actions. We are investigating a burglary of a house where a safe was removed from an address. We attended a noisy party in Hawea around 8:30pm. I am not sure if people are aware but any time of day or night Noise Control can be called to look into a noise complaint. It is all about reasonable noise for the time, place and circumstances. What is a comfortable volume at 3pm may be far too high at 10pm or later. There was a report of a bike being stolen from outside a local café. Bicycles which are not locked make it too easy for a thief to take. It is unacceptable to steal something that belongs to someone else but let’s try and secure our things so it is at least not too easy to do. We caught another 4 drink drivers this week with one being more than three times the legal alcohol limit. I wonder sometimes what their friends are thinking when they know their friend has been drinking and then get in the car. Why are we not caring enough for them or yourselves to stop them from driving and finding another way to get home? All of these people had a short distance to travel to get home. We were called to a pair of suspicious males outside a local backpacker. They were smoking cannabis on a main street in town with passers-by so there was no surprise we were called. A number of calls to Police of bad drivers on our roads again. Can I remind our readers that it is not only foreign drivers who are the subject of driving complaints. Stay on your own side of the road, obey the speed limit and don’t overtake with less than 100 metres of clear visibility throughout the entire manoeuvre. Stay safe out there please.

There are only a few weeks of ski season left so let’s see if we can get through relatively unscathed overall. Look after each other and make sure you are not only thinking of yourself as many of the people in the matters we dealt with this week did. Kia Tiro, ka mihi

I’m Jim Boult and I’m standing for re-election as Queenstown Lakes Mayor. We’ve achieved a great deal in the past three years, but there’s still much to do to ensure our district remains a wonderful place to live. Here’s my thoughts on the Upper Clutha: Wanaka Airport: I’ve already put a stop to plans to offer regional flights from Wanaka again, until social and economic impact studies have been completed by specialists independent of council. There’ll be plenty of opportunity for community input and we’ll end up with a clear plan of what the community wants and doesn’t want. My position - I support regional flights out of Wanaka. ATR aircraft would be sufficient for any destination other than Auckland, which would require a narrow-body jet to be an economic service. I don’t support trans-Tasman or international flights out of Wanaka. We’re a small country and we already have two long-haul airports in Christchurch and Auckland, and a trans-Tasman airport in Queenstown. That’s all we need, Sustainable tourism: I support “high value” tourism, essentially attracting visitors who spend more, and this is possible through price manipulation. There’s evidence we’re making progress here - during the quarter ended 30 June 2019 (but annualised), guest nights increased 1.1% but the spend increased 3.7%. Wanaka Community Board’s voice: If re-elected, I’ll meet with the board regularly to ensure its members and the council are more in sync. I personally support the Upper Clutha having more councillors but that number is set by Government, based on population. Wanaka town centre plan: QLDC’s town centre plans for Queenstown and Frankton have been very successful, but we need to do more work on Wanaka’s. If re-elected, I’m committed to developing a town centre plan for Wanaka that locals are truly excited about. Public transport: The new $2 bus service in the Wakatipu is a huge success. Passenger numbers have grown from 30,000 a month to 130,000. If re-relected, I’ll extend the service to Wanaka, Albert Town, Hawea and, if possible, Luggate. I’m also planning Cromwell to Wanaka and Queenstown services. Affordable housing: We’re making good progress. A mayoral taskforce I set up in 2016 has come up with innovative plans, including Secure Home where the land is not included in the property price. Additionally, there are around 200 affordable housing sections in developments either underway or planned, and new Government regulations around zoning should make it easier to increase this number. We’re also working on other initiatives - the Government says the QLDC has done more for housing than any other council. Active transport: Last week the QLDC approved an active travel network in Queenstown, financially supported by the NZTA. Now it’s Upper Clutha’s turn, with a network in the 2021-24 budget. In the meantime, we’re getting on with individual projects in Wanaka, including the new underpass to Three Parks, cycle lanes on Anderson and Aubrey roads and a route along Roy’s Bay. Environmental issues: At the top of my list of concerns is Lake Snow. The ORC hasn’t done enough to eradicate it. If not contained, the QLDC will need to spend millions on water filters to prevent it from affecting peoples’ washing machines. The council’s also on the cusp of adopting a Climate Change Plan to ensure our communities are prepared for climate change and a zero carbon future, our buildings and infrastructure are resilient, and the QLDC itself is greenhouse gas and carbon emissions free by 2050.
