If you know someone who could use a home cooked meal, delivered right to their door, let us know because that’s what we do at Food for Love. Our volunteer cooks create delicious hot meals from home taking care of the nominations and usually deliver to the individual or family who have been nominated. In addition, we help with school lunches when needed and a team of bulk cooks meet every Thursday to cook weekend meals for our elderly population as well as meals for the Food Bank. Since last July, Food for Love cooked 4,568 meals for our nominees. Community members are nominated for a wide range of reasons. It could be health issues such as cancer and other serious afflictions, debilitating illnesses,
mental health issues, domestic strife, injury, new births, unemployment and the elderly and infirm who remain in their own homes. Auto & jetwashes

Kia ora Wanaka. We’ve welcomed back our colleagues deployed to Wellington and we’ve all been busy with the day-to-day Policing of the town. On Monday last week there were some adverse weather conditions which led to two crashes on Cardrona Valley Road, approaching the summit. Both resulted in the single vehicle rolling after failing to navigate their respective corners. One driver was injured. This road is not to be taken for granted when it is wet and needs more caution from drivers. On Tuesday there was an overnight burglary where a residential house was entered during the night and a range of property taken. Thankfully this is not the norm in our town, but it is something to be wary of and to take the appropriate precautions with locking doors. Police have noticed some rather high speeds on the newly sealed stretch of Ballantyne Road. We have been out to enforce this 60km/h limit and a few drivers have come precariously close to losing their licence instantly by approaching 100km/h. Another focus has been the use of cell phones while driving. This is a clear danger on the road, so Wanaka Police have been conducting operations to observe and enforce this. Has anyone seen us covertly watching lately, or been stopped and wondered how we saw them on their phone? On Thursday there was another crash, this time on Ruby Island Road, where another single vehicle has rolled after losing control on a corner. No one was injured on this occasion. On Thursday we also attended a building site after a new air-conditioning unit was taken from the building.

On Friday night Wanaka Police joined the Otago Lakes Safer Roads Team to conduct checkpoints in Wanaka. Unfortunately, three drivers were quickly found over the limit and will have fines associated to their driving. This trend is disappointing and unfortunately regular. We will continue to put checkpoints anywhere at any time. Over the weekend it was reported that the batteries were stolen from the traffic lights operating on the road from Makarora to Haast. There have been long term road works and while I can appreciate it can be frustrating, stealing the batteries is clearly not the answer, and a criminal one. Hope this week treats you well. If you see the Wanaka Police out there, don’t be afraid to say hello.

This fun programme is designed to support Year 9-11 athletes in their sporting endeavours by providing generic skills and information they can use as they develop in their sport. The programme is delivered using local and visiting sports ‘experts’ throughout Terms 1 & 2 and covers topics such as nutrition, core strength, mental skills, rest and recovery and goal setting.
The Trust has other projects in the pipeline including the ever popular Festival of Sport & Recreation later in the year. Next up is the Trust’s AGM to be held on Thursday 24th March 7-8pm at the Wanaka Recreation Centre. All welcome.

M!NT Trust ‘blown away’ by community support despite pandemic Wanaka based not-for-profit, M!NT Charitable Trust has been overwhelmed with community support following their recent inclusion as ‘charity of choice’ in the Hirepool Charity Classic Trilogy Golf tournament. ‘The Classic’ will stage a silent auction, where businesses and individuals have been able to contribute an item or experience - with all profits going to M!NT - which is set up to support those in the district with intellectual disabilities. Jude Smith, ambassador, is grateful. “We have been blown away by the number of people who have given without a second thought. In such difficult times, we are truly

humbled and wish to thank each and every person for thinking of us,” Smith said. Over 50 businesses have contributed so far including a night’s accommodation in Gibbston Valley, an 18 hole round of golf at Millbrook, a three night getaway in Twizel and a private cooking lesson with Chef Chris Wright. Other auction items up for grabs are a Dunedin fishing charter, a sculpture by Steve Runmore and a painting by Susie Ruddenklau, among many more. Our mission is to help committed residents of the Queenstown Lakes District into decent affordable housing with secure tenure. QLCHT has assisted 230 households through a range of programmes since its inception, and now operates with net funds in excess of $35m. We are looking for a professionally equipped capable person to lead our organisation, who understands that good housing outcomes are the cornerstone of a strong community. They should be passionate about our District; its diversity, strength and sustainable growth.
