Volunteers Needed For The Mount Iron Walking School Bus

More adult volunteers are needed to keep the Mount Iron walking school bus operating. Last year, student numbers were growing but this year the ‘bus’ has had to be put on hold until at least two more volunteers are found to help supervise the Wanaka Primary and Holy Family pupils as they walk to school. “The kids love to walk, it’s a great chance to make friends and see what’s happening in their neighbourhood. They also learn a lot about road safety,” said Kath Wilson, the walking school bus coordinator.

Kirsty Barr, school travel plan coordinator for Queenstown Lakes District Council said she’s working with the school and other community groups to see if volunteers will come forward so the kids can continue to enjoy taking the ‘bus’. “It takes about half an hour, and because it’s a shared roster, helpers would only be walking once a week. However people are time poor, especially parents and that’s one reason we wanted to involve the wider community”.
