CRIME LINE
// by your local WANAKA POLICE
On Monday Police dealt with a vehicle collision at the corner of Brownston Street and Helwick Street, one party was issued an infringement notice for failing to give way appropriately.
Often the press refer to ‘shop lifting’ events, they are more appropriately called Shop Theft and place a considerable burden on our retail businesses who have to cover their costs by raising prices which affects the honest clientele.
These are not a matter of stealing to subsist, but targeting luxury items from the grocery aisles.
Police are currently dealing with a large spate of Shop Thefts at our Supermarkets. Modern surveillance systems enable the offending to be detected and linked, Big Brother is watching!
The offenders need to consider that Police will charge for such offences, and they will be facing multiple charges in court. They will have the inconvenience of not being able to shop locally.
On Monday evening a drink driver was apprehended. Their sober passenger took over driving duties, which is perhaps what they should have done in the first place.
An excessive speeder clocked at double the speed limit on Aubrey Road was dealt with. They now have their licence suspended due
Police also dealt with an issue of stock on the roadway. Farmers, please ensure your fencing meets the necessary standards to ensure the safety of the stock and road users.
Wednesday saw a further two drink drivers taken off the roads, and further reports of shop theft.
Thursday evening saw another drink driver apprehended. Police received report of wilful damage to a vehicle on Tenby Street and another drink driver was apprehended.
Saturday saw Police dealing with a family harm matter and some disorderly behaviour in the Wanaka area.
To all our retailers, we are currently dealing with regular and prolific Shop Theft offenders. Please report all incidents so that we are able to fully assess the scale of the problem, and deal with all
With the additional staffing resources we have recently received, we will be in a better position to deal with such offending.
We will place the offenders before the court and seek reparation
Take care everyone. Have a great week.

Guardians of an outstanding landscape
As summer winds down it’s a great time to start thinking about what you’d like to harvest from your garden this winter.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to get the best out of your winter garden, come along and get inspired at Dr Compost’s free Winter Veggies workshop 5.00 - 7.00pm, 20 February, St John Rooms, 4 Link Way, Wānaka. Find out
- which crops grow well in our region
- when to plant for the best results
- how to protect your plants from our harsh climate by using cloches and existing microclimates
With more than 20 years composting and gardening experience in our unique Central Otago climate, Dr Compost, aka Hāwea’s Ben Elms, has all the tricks to get your compost heap working and your garden blooming. He loves answering questions and sharing his knowledge in his entertaining workshops.
The Dr Compost Home Composting Project is delivered by Wastebusters and funded by QLDC to reduce organic waste to landfill. Spaces are limited, so please reserve your free spot for this popular workshop at the event link on our website www.wastebusters.co.nz/events
For 15 years now Lindis Pass Conservation Group has been carrying out weed control in the Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve.
When you next drive through and enjoy the magnificent sweep of tall tussock over the rhythm of spur and gully, do send a thought to the group. Without their effort, the Pass landscape would be riddled with brier like the country to the north and south of it; and patched with dreaded lupin, an escaped garden plant that smothers native flowers and splashes the tawny landscape with hard colour. Broom, wilding pines and Hieracium are also in the group’s sights.
Sheep grazing on the tall tussocklands is seen by some as the way to control the High Country scourge of grey mats of Hieracium daisy. But in the Scenic Reserve, seedling snow tussocks and grasses are now growing through it. If left to thrive they will shade it out.

This is nature’s slow way of resetting a balance. To assist nature, seed is collected each summer and young snow tussocks grown up to plant back into the Reserve each autumn as “islands” in the bared areas.
More volunteers are urgently needed to carry on the work of the group. A workday is held each month on a weekend, weather permitting. Gear is provided and rides are available. The Hawea Community Association (HCA) will be holding a public meeting at the Lake Hawea Community Centre on Sunday, 19 February 2023 to update residents and ratepayers around matters relating to the mediation with Universal Developments, Streat Developments, Queenstown Lakes District Council and Otago Regional Council.
The HCA has, subject to the confines of the Resource Management Act, reached an agreement with all parties regarding the urban growth boundary and the future development of the town. The HCA would now like to present this agreement back to the community and answer any questions.
