The much anticipated annual Rotary Club of Wanaka Book Sale, comprising thousands of second hand books, is on this weekend for three days from Friday, July 16 to Sunday, July 18. The book sale has traditionally seen hundreds of people flock to the Lake Wanaka Centre in search of a great read at a bargain price. Rotary Club of Wanaka president Richard Wallace said the public response to donating books over the past few weeks has been incredible. “We have thousands of books, the storage we arranged is at capacity and books have been coming in consistently since we advertised for donations,” Richard said.

Hello all you lovely people. I am still chomping at the bit to get back in uniform after my nasty crash at Christmas time but not long now! I would like to welcome Constable Andy to the team. I worked with Andy when he started in the Police in Dunedin, great bloke. If you see him around town, please say hi.
I was showing a group of Primary school children through the Police Station last Friday and I asked them what Police do. Every group of little ones came up with the “catch baddies”, “catch robbers”, “catch speeders” … etc, but every group had at least one littlie who said “Help people!” Thank you to those which remind the community that we have a primary purpose to protect. Generally, that is what Police do. Protecting people from causing carnage on the roads, assaults, thefts, or drugs, we pretty much do all our business to help someone. If I arrest someone for a family harm offence, I do so to protect the victim from further harm or injury. If I write someone a speeding or seatbelt ticket, I am protecting them or other motorists from being hurt. You only need to ask a Police Officer if they have seen how speed and seatbelts causes trauma on the roads. Don’t even get me started talking about the drink driving in this town. It’s disgraceful. We have had a busy week, but a few particular matters stood out. We caught burglars this week who in broad daylight entered a property and were spotted by the owner who was home. Those persons were caught thanks to quick actions by the owner and notifying us as soon as possible. We had 3 road crashes on one morning before 9.00am. Make sure you clear your frosty windscreens because every year we have crashes caused by someone looking through a porthole and visibility clearly wasn’t good enough. Set your alarm 5 minutes earlier at this time of year to get up and going in time to clear the car so you are not rushing. Drive expecting Jack Frost to lay his devious traps. There were a number of other youth matters I won’t mention in here. How about we have a fluffy bunnies week. If you know you are doing, or about to do something that your Grandmother wouldn’t approve of, take a breath, walk away, or think again. I would love to write a Crimeline next week that is all about how many snowmen were made, or how many people have helped someone cross a road, or how many muffins were given to people who need something nice, or other kind things that were done for others.

Full steam ahead at the Wanaka Community Workshop Three months since opening and the WCW has gone from strength to strength. The first group to establish is the MenShed group. This group has made 15 Gnome Homes for QLDC bike park at Eely Point, parts for rodent traps for WAI Wanaka, and 100 Rat Traps which are for sale to the public. Donnelle Dunlop, the first female in the MenShed group, has been working with several members to construct an outdoor kitchen bench for Te Kura O Take Kārara, the new Primary school. Made from a salvaged stainless steel bench and wood recovered from building waste, the bench will be used for their gardening education program.
This project really highlights what the MenShed is about, providing a space for people to find purpose and companionship, for knowledge and skills to be shared, a reduction of waste to landfill, and the end product is something that benefits the community now and into the future. Through the generosity of local trusts and sponsors, the Workshop is now equipped with a dust extraction system and some new tools. The current opening hours for MenShed members are 9.00am - 12.00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The next phase CreatorSpace will begin opening from 3.00 7.00pm, Monday and Wednesday. Members of the public are invited to apply for a membership through the website.

Waterfall Bay Walking Track Preston Pest Control will be laying y g Pindone carrot bait for rabbit control on and around the Waterfall Bay walking track by helicopter and ground methods. This operation will start on or around the 20th July, weather dependent. The track will be closed while the operation is underway and will reopen when the track has been cleared. Warning notices will be erected at both ends of the track when bait has been laid. THE PUBLIC SHOULD NOTE THE FOLLOWING POINTS. • While the track will be cleared of bait, pindone baits will be present on ground surrounding the track. • Pindone bait and carcasses represent a lower risk to dogs but please keep your dog under control in this area and do not allow it to scavenge on carcasses or eat baits. • Consider exercising your dog in another area if you are at all concerned. • Do not handle or remove any baits or carcasses. • Do supervise children in this area.
