On Saturday 15 June from 2.30pm until 6.00pm Kahu Youth will be celebrating Matariki once again at the Dinosaur Park. We’ll have our usual workshops and Kapa Haka performances, two bonfires on the shore with fire dance performances and loads more. There will be the huge community hangi, with over 900 portions packed in, and to finish it off, we will be having our amazing firework display – so make sure you hang about! Once again, this is a truly community affair. We want to give a huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers, schools and community organisations that put their blood, sweat and tears into making this happen. Everything from the hangi prep to set-up, pack
down and stewarding and all the workshops and performances are volunteer led. Our major supporters this year are the QLDC, Radio Wanaka and Roy FM and the Wanaka Pantomimers. We can’t thank you enough! Our local community partners include Wastebusters, Mitre 10, Downer, Print It, Bullock Bar, Placemakers, The Butcher’s Block, Entertainment Solutions, Med Market and Venus Coffee. We are always humbled by the level of help, support and plain old hard graft we receive from the community to make this happen. So come on down on Saturday and share some kai and good times! National Volunteer Week celebrates the collective contribution of the 1.2 million volunteers who enrich Aotearoa New Zealand. This year’s theme, chosen by Volunteering New Zealand, is “Whiria te tangata – weaving the people together”. Locally we see hundreds of volunteers each week contributing a huge amount to our communities. Whether supporting others, improving the environment, campaigning, fundraising, responding to emergencies or facilitating sports or community events, volunteers are crucial to keeping our communities strong, connected and vibrant. Volunteering increases self-confidence, gives a sense of purpose, provides a pathway to employment, creates friendships and should be really enjoyable! Volunteers strengthen community groups; bringing diver-
sity, passion, skills, knowledge, capability, motivation, respect and much more. Up and down the country this week volunteers will be thanked for their contributions and commitment and we encourage you to pause for a moment and thank volunteers that you know who make this community stronger. Small bread tags make a big difference Written by: Rhian Telfer & Alice Porter Have you ever felt guilty of throwing away the hundreds of bread tags that you use daily? Well, now we have an eco-friendly solution that you can use! We have been involved in a project called Bread Tags for Wheelchairs. This is a charity where people collect bread tags, that are made into seedling pots, sold, then the money raised goes to the people in need of wheelchairs. The wheelchairs are mostly delivered to places in South Africa, where they can’t afford or get access to them.
We started this project at the start of this term and have so far collected around 6,000 bread tags. There have been containers handed around various places in Wanaka and we have got many places involved in this project. Our goal is to collect around 600,000 bread tags – enough to make one wheelchair. While we may not get nearly enough bread tags, we would still like people to help us collect them. It may be as simple as putting a jar in your kitchen or asking friends, but every little tag counts! You can drop them off at the ODS building (at the school entrance on Totara Terrace). on a Wednesday or Thursday. Thank you!
Volunteer Wanaka Fire Bridage fundraising continues Written by: Tom Hepworth The Cow Wanaka are very proud to announce that we are continuing our fundraising campaign on behalf of the Volunteer Wanaka Fire Bridage throughout the month of June, by means of selling raffle tickets to our-
dine-in & takeaway clients. The winner will recieve a Dinner Package For Two, which includes, a garlic/plain bread to start, a choice of any two mains, a dessert to share and a bottle of house wine or a bucket of beers for good measure. Shop keepers, keep up the good work on watching your stock and reporting the shop lifters. The term “honesty box”, is where you buy things from the road side and pay money into the tin where the goods are. This then gets paid generally to the child who is the inventor of the sales pitch and then generally goes to the lolly shop. The lolly shop has been losing money because the honesty boxes are being emptied by the wrong children. It’s not up to the thief to take the money they don’t earn. I guess the thief doesn’t know the value of earning. I say no more. So far this winter the Crown Range has claimed a few crashes. The ice, snow, grit and black ice has taken its toll. Please be careful in those hours where the ice forms. Watch for rocks that fall with the rain and those that get pushed off by the ice. There are still plenty of drivers who think their need to get to where they are going is more important than your need to get to where you are going. For all of you on the road driving in the changing conditions and with increased snow seekers on the road please drive carefully. Don’t forget to show your best driving skills – a stop sign means stop, 50km/h means 50km/h and so on. We are still receiving driving complaints with a video or two showing drivers who cross the centre line and cause near misses. This is great evidence if you have a passenger who can record footage for you. Please don’t hesitate to call 111 for any dangerous driving. Drink drivers this week have been less evident from other weeks, however it is still happening. Yes its cold, but the distance from your house to where you have been drinking is the same. A new catch phrase could be “Be prepared’’. We prepare when we go to catch a plane by leaving an hour sooner than we used to just to get through Ladies Mile and across the Shotover Bridge. So it’s not that hard to get a sober driver or burn calories and walk home. Check your cars for winter, have a go at putting the chains on. Make sure you have a good ice scraper… and use it…! A great find on Sunday saw a hand bag with a lot of cash in it, handed in to the Police station. The owners are very thankful for the honesty that the Wanaka towns people have. That’s awesome stuff right there.
