The Showgrounds Community Sports Centre Trust rebuild of the Upper Clutha Rugby clubrooms has been completed in time to host Otago’s first defence of the Ranfurly Shield. This game will be played on Saturday in front of a sellout crowd. The new building named The Pembroke Pavilion has doubled the size of the old clubrooms with the facilities now boasting 4 changing rooms, a function room capable of hosting 250 people, a meeting room and a commercial kitchen and bar.
An amazing effort has been put in by so many locals and businesses to get the facilities finished on the limited budget. The new building has kept the original wooden ceiling and beams but everything else has been replaced. Fundraising is underway to complete the landscaping which includes a large outdoor deck with inbuilt seating and a BBQ.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS )-m-h- oll†mb|‹ o†v; bv m;-ubm] 1olrŃ´;াom Written by: Gina Treadwell On Sunday 14 July from 11.00am – 2.00pm there will be an open day for all those keen to see inside. You may have seen Wanaka’s exciting, new community hub in its finishing stages on the corner of McDougall Road and Upton Street. This wonderful new building is a first for Wanaka and is due to open soon. The hub will house: social services, art groups, music classes, clubs, friendship groups and volunteers. There will also be meeting rooms for conferences and
events/functions that will be catered for in the large auditorium and commercial kitchen. The building will also have reception areas for meet and greet. We expect every local resident to have a reason to visit the building at least once in its first year of operation. It really will be our local community “home�. To date, the trust has raised over $3 million. We still have $800,000 to raise. We would really appreciate your help in getting us over the line. Anything you could donate to this wonderful community facility would be very gratefully received.

We’ll have competitions to enter, prizes to win and the Rubbish Trip’s comprehensive guide to waste-free local shopping to help you reduce your plastic consumption. New podcast series is looking for interviewees Written by: Paul Roy It is hard to imagine Wanaka as it used to be 60 years ago, when it was a small community where everyone knew each other and the development of ski fields and the mass tourism that we have today were unheard of. In those days, deer were in plague proportions and destroying the environment despite the best efforts of Government employed cullers. It wasn’t until the mid 70’s and the success of helicopter meat shooting and helicopter live capture that numbers were reduced to a manageable level and the establishment of today’s deer farms. This was a unique time in NZ and world aviation history, but it took its toll with over 80 people killed and many more injured. Wanaka resident and documentary maker Paul Roy documented the exploits of aerial hunting and live capture days in two television documentaries, ‘Deer Wars’ and ‘Deer Devils’, which have been widely seen
and came from extensive interviews with over 150 people across New Zealand – pilots, shooters, gutters, wives and others. Inevitably, with so much material to choose from, much had to be left out so Paul is now embarking on a podcast series covering the colourful history of deer control from the days of the Government cullers and private shooters to the success of today’s deer farms. Over the next year, Paul will be interviewing people all around the country for this series and is keen to hear from people who want to share their experiences with further generations. This includes pilots, shooters, gutters, drivers, support staff, wives, girlfriends and particularly those who engaged in ground hunting before the advent of helicopter hunting. Hi everyone! Where is the snow? I write this on Sunday night so hopefully I am still correct in saying this when this comes to print. It’s warm out there most nights and I think the grass is still growing. Over the week, a few items have been taken from the bars at night. Please make sure your stuff (jackets, passports and clothing) goes home with you. If you need clothes or jackets, try visiting the second hand stores in town. They are the favourite of many a Wanaka local, including myself. Thefts from stores are becoming a problem. Although some may see this as not a worry, they cost the stores many thousands of dollars a year. Be respectful to others who are working hard. A snowboard and skis were stolen from Cardrona Ski Resort. Again, please look after your things; they cost a lot of money and they need your attention. Have a plan to look after your gear – ask someone to look after them while lunch is being had and stagger your rest periods. Over the week, there were a couple of crashes at the Lake Hawea Dam structure – off the road into the fence. Luckily the old fence held. With some work we hope a new and better fence will replace the old one. Please take care on all of our roads. The loss of your car at any time is a great inconvenience and injury can last for years, both physical and mental. It’s the responsibility of us all to drive safely and ensure each of us and our families get to where we're going safely. Three people this weekend were apprehended for drink driving and are off to court. We always say it, but if you are drinking, have a plan to get home some other way. The weather is bound to get snowy and cold at some stage and that will probably lead to ice on the roads. Be prepared and make sure you drive to the conditions. Make extra time for that journey and leave 30 minutes earlier. Also allow for everyone else on the roads and be patient! Keep calling in with the bad driving on *555 and if you have a passenger who can take a video that would be gold! Have a good week.
