With New Zealand’s international borders still closed, the Winter Games NZ team have opted for a small but spectacular event this year. Comprising the North Face Frontier 2* and 4* at The Remarkables Ski Area from 29 August to 2 September and the Sky Big Air showcase at Cardrona Alpine Resort on 4 September. The Sky Big Air showcase will be at the world-renowned Big Bucks Park and will have the top kiwi Freeskiers and Snowboarders performing their best combinations of tricks for the judges and spectators alike. The competition format is being co-designed with athletes to ensure they can showcase their incredible talent. New Zealand snowboarding star, Olympic Bronze medalist in Big Air and 2021 FIS
Slopestyle World Champion, Zoi SadowskiSynnott is stoked to see the event on the calendar and has confirmed her attendance, alongside fellow Olympic snowboarder Tiarn Collins. The North Face Frontier events are both Freeride World Qualifier Tour events, with the events held on the best snow and weather days during the window. The 2* event will be held in Shadow Basin, while the 4* event will be hosted in the Alta Chutes, with Lake Alta providing an epic viewing platform. One of our lovely holiday parks was targeted by an out-of-town guest (who won’t be invited back any time soon), after treating their room like a Mods & Rockers after-party. More shoplifting going on at Three Parks – yes – more CCTV cameras – yes, you can expect a visit shortly. The weekend saw mostly great locals and visitors enjoying the town, it was great to see so many people out filling the hospo spots up for dinner. Unfortunately, some were less than content with everyone else’s eternal happiness and thought that the evening needed spicing up with some choice language on Ardmore Street. They and their friend came back to the station for a quieter talk. This night also coincided with a house party on Hunter Crescent, which had an overflow into town. Significant damage was then done to the construction work on Lakeside Road and we are appealing for any witnesses, please. Throughout the week, the teams have been out on our roads as part of the national drive (pun intended) to increase safety and reduce harm on our roads. You would have undoubtedly seen or been stopped by one of us friendly lot doing a breath test or having a conversation about speed or distractions (i.e. cell phones). I’m pleased to say that on the alcohol front we are doing much better team, but maybe pull over to text your mate that you’re running late, and then you won’t have to rush to get there. On the note of roads, the Crown Range is predicted to get some snow this week. If you are required to carry chains, make sure you a) know how to use them, and b) are prepared to put them on. The road crews will be up there stopping you go through if the conditions deem you need to have chains on, and you don’t fit them. They’re helping you stay upright with your wheels pointing down, so listen to them.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wanaka Playgroup offer musical workshops in August The committee have been working hard to attain grants to cover running costs of the Wanaka Playgroup to enable them to free up their fundraising efforts for some exciting new experiences for Tamarki that attend the Playgroup sessions. Wanaka Playgroup aims to offer an inclusive environment whereby caregivers and their children can come along to sessions making connections within their local community.
Wanaka Playgroup have an exciting month coming up for August with a special guest ‘Nixie Pixie’ running some musical workshop sessions during Playgroup session times.
The Playgroup operates in the Wanaka Squash Club building on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am - 12.30pm during school terms. ‘Nixie Pixie’ otherwise known as Nicola Woods, is a musical play therapist that specialises in early years, intellectual disabilities and group workshops.
M!NT Horizons programme For the first time, M!NT Charitable Trust will be delivering a pilot programme at Mt Aspiring College, with the aim of giving youth aged 13-17 the skillset and confidence to engage with young people with intellectual disabilities in our community. This new programme, facilitated by Hallie Pearson, a highly qualified Speech and Language Therapist and Charlotte Jackson, M!NT Programme Manager will run over 6 weeks. There will be interactive and fun sessions on topics including building rapport, how to expect the unexpected, and basic sign language. This is a great environment to practise new strategies in a pressure-free environment. M!NT offers an

Club donations are decided at the May AGM and Grow Wanaka was one of the main beneficiaries. The Club is keen to support this extremely worthy initiative and we hope to be able to provide ongoing useful advice and enthusiasm to Grow Wanaka.
Grow Wanaka will benefit from The Wanaka Garden Club’s annual round of donations this year. Grow Wanaka: Soil, Plants, People is a new Community Garden project, whose vision is to create a vibrant, educational hub where all people in the community can come to learn, connect and grow. Their aim is to collect and divert food waste from landfill, cultivate food, donate excess, and promote food resilience and security in the community. The Wanaka Garden Club was established in 1963 and continues to thrive with approximately 100 local members. The Club holds regular monthly meetings at the Presbyterian Church on the 4th Thursday of the month. The meeting format normally consists of a speaker, advice on seasonal topics, supper, raffle and a well supported Bring and Buy table.
