Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us for what will undoubtedly be a riveting month of Wallis programs!

These first days of June mark the final performances of our radically reimagined production of KING LEAR with Joe Morton. Our director John Gould Rubin has breathed new life into a true classic. In particular, I’m in awe of the remarkably talented cast and brilliant designers who brought this iteration of Shakespeare’s seminal tragedy to life on the Bram Goldsmith stage. This dynamic, collaborative production pushes boundaries and disciplinary mediums in new ways that are not to be missed.

Also this month, we are proud to relaunch our partnership with Writer’s Bloc, beginning with what is sure to be a once-in-a- lifetime event: An Evening with James Burrows, in celebration of the release of his memoir, Directed by James Burrows. This legendary TV sitcom director (“Friends,” “Will & Grace,” “Cheers,” and so many more) will reflect on his storied career with award-winning actor/producer/director Jason Bateman. As a longtime Jason Bateman fan, I am both humbled and excited to witness their conversation in person. Please join us as we uncover never-revealed stories behind the greatest sitcoms ever created.

We are overjoyed to present such a vibrant season of programming coming out of the COVID 19 pandemic. We are especially pleased to host acclaimed pianist Inna Faliks at The Wallis after a long postponement due to the pandemic. Inna Falik’s program will deliver breathtakingly rich and innovative new works alongside masterpieces by Beethoven and Ravel.

Last but certainly not least, in another overdue performance, we are elated to welcome back Wallis artist Sheléa as she brings her soulful voice and powerful stage presence to Pretty World: Through the Eyes of Alan and Marilyn Bergman. The Bergmans are among the best American songwriting duos of all time. All of us at The Wallis were saddened to hear of Marilyn Bergman’s passing on January 8, 2022 and we can’t imagine a better way to honor her life and legacy than with Sheléa’s incomparable talent.

As 2021/22 wraps up at The Wallis, we look ahead optimistically and with great fervor to our 2022/23 Season. These past two years have demonstrated both the necessity and the invincibility of the arts, and we are delighted with our upcoming season. ABOUT THE ARTISTS

JOE MORTON (King Lear) is an Emmy® Award winner and recipient of multiple NAACP Image Awards for his role as Rowan/Eli Pope in Shonda Rhimes’ critically acclaimed series “Scandal.” Currently, Morton can be seen as the wily Teddy Franklin in the FOX drama “Our Kind of People,” and as co-host (and co-producer) on “Inside The Black Box,” an interactive interview show, on “Crackle TV,” which explores the experiences of black artists within the world of entertainment. In film, Morton is widely recognized as the mute alien in the title role of John Sayle’s The Brother from Another Planet, and as the ill-fated scientist, Miles Dyson, in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Morton was last seen as Cyborg’s dad, Dr. Silas Stone, in Batman vs. Superman, and Zack Snyder’s Cut of Justice League. Morton debuted on Broadway in Hair, and received a Tony nomination and Theatre World Award for his portrayal of Walter Lee Younger in Raisin. His OffBroadway portrayal of comedian/civil-rights activist, Dick Gregory, in Turn Me Loose, earned him the Off-Broadway Alliance, the AUDELCO, the LA Critics Circle, and the prestigious Lucille Lortell Award, for Outstanding Lead Actor in a play.

BRIE ELEY(she/her) (Regan) is thrilled to make her Wallis debut with King Lear. This marks her return to classical theater after studying at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford and performing Viola in Twelfth Night (Kings County Shakespeare).

Theater highlights include Skylight Theatre, The Classical Theatre of Harlem, The Kennedy Center and the Humana Festival of New Plays. Recent TV: “The Rookie,” “9-1-1” and “Shining Vale.” Up next, Brie will be seen opposite Evan Peters in Ryan Murphy’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for Netflix. She’s performed sketch-comedy throughout Los Angeles, and screened her original content at NBCUniversal’s “Short Cuts,” among others. Brie is also the founder of Here and Ready, a networking collective for Black actresses that programs enrichment seminars, casting workshops and supports more than 1,200 members nationwide. RIVER GALLO (they/them) (Cordelia/Fool) is a GLAAD-award winning SalvadoranAmerican actor, filmmaker, writer, model and intersex activist from New Jersey. They are the writer, star, and co-director of Ponyboi the first narrative film created by and starring an out intersex person in cinema history, which premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, executive produced

by Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson. Previous theater credits include Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairly Stupid Tales (Atlantic Theater Company) and television credits include “Love, Victor” (Hulu). As a model, River has worked on campaigns with Abercrombie & Fitch, Crocs, Chromat and Maison Margiela. River won a GLAAD Rising Star Media Award and was named one of the “Most Exciting Queer People to Follow” by Out Magazine. They received their BFA in Drama at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts Experimental Theater Wing and an MFA in Film and Television Production at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. ZACHARY SOLOMON (Edgar/France) is stoked and humbled to be joining this production under the direction of John Gould Rubin and performing alongside such an incredible cast. Originally from Atlanta, Zachary started acting when his mother forced him to audition for the 4th grade production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, in which he was cast in the titular role of Children’s Chorus Member Number 21. He earned his BFA from NYU Tisch and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and continued on-camera training with Anthony Abeson, Vance Barber, Lesly Kahn, and Joel Johnstone. Most recently, Zachary wrapped shooting Pamela Adlon’s “Better Things” on FX, playing the role of Push. Zachary would like to thank John Gould Rubin and Amy Lieberman for this incredible opportunity, his manager Brad Gelfond for his tireless work, his brilliant acting coaches, his friends and family for their endless love, and his father Richard Solomon for being his biggest fan and best teacher, and always showing unwavering support. He dedicates this performance to his beloved late mother, who passed down her love for the theater to him through singing incredibly off-pitch in the car to their cassettes of Funny Girl and Oklahoma.

EMILY SWALLOW (Goneril) Emily is grateful to return to the stage, having most recently appeared as The Armorer in the acclaimed Disney+ series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. STANLEY ANDREW JACKSON III (Understudy for Edgar/France and Edmund) is excited to be working with The Wallis! He was born in New Orleans, LA and raised in Houston, TX. He graduated from Carver Magnet High School, has a BFA from Howard University, and an MA in Classical Acting from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Stanley performed Shakespeare with the Pop-up Globe Theatre Company for two years in Auckland, New Zealand and Melbourne, Australia.

Jackson now lives in Los Angeles. KEITH SKRETCH (Projection Design) is a Los Angeles-based media artist and video designer. Stage designs include work with Big Dance Theater, Mallory Catlett, Palissimo, Phantom Limb Company, Zoe Aja Moore, Daniel Fish, Belle Rêve Theatre Co., CalArts Center for New Performance, and Radiolab. He previously collaborated with director John Gould Rubin on Double Indemnity (The Old Globe, Craig Noel Award Nominee). His installations have been presented at Studio Teatrgaleria in Warsaw, San Diego International Airport, Bohemian National Hall in NYC, CultureHub, HERE Arts Center, Automata, EMPAC, and Occidental College, and include collaborations with composer Ellen Reid and visual artist Kenyatta Hinkle. Skretch has received Ovation, Bessie, and Henry Hewes design awards, and is a creative director and core team member at LA-based interactive media company NightLight Labs.

HILL (she/her) (Costume Design) is a costume designer using her talents for live performance, film, and television to create surrealistic and experimental worlds. Some of her past projects also include Concerto for Having Fun with Elvis on Stage (REDCAT) with opera director Alexander Gedeon and the highly awarded short films Boys Don’t Wear Dresses and HATS. She also worked closely with director Nataki Garrett to design The Carolyn Bryant Project (REDCAT), which would become a New York Times Critic’s Pick. X. holds a Master’s of Fine Arts in Costume Design from CalArts, a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design, and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology from Eugene Lang Liberal Arts College. STEPHEN STRAWBRIDGE (Lighting Design) previously designed Turn Me Loose for the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. He has designed over 200 productions on and Off Broadway and at most major regional theater and opera companies across the U.S. Internationally his work has been seen in Bergen, Copenhagen, The Hague, Hong Kong, Linz, Lisbon, Munich, Naples, Sao Paulo, Stratford-upon-Avon (Royal Shakespeare Company), Stockholm, Vienna, and Wroclaw. Mr. Strawbridge has been recognized with numerous awards and nominations including the American Theatre Wing, San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, Connecticut Critics Circle, Dallas– Fort Worth Theater Critics Forum, Drama Desk, Helen Hayes, Henry Hewes Design, and Lucille Lortel. He heads the Lighting Design Program at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale.

JENNY PARK (she/her) (Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to be working on her first production with The Wallis. Her recent credits include The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Julius Caesar, All’s Well that Ends Well, Measure for Measure, Othello, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Letters from Home, and Snow Geese at the Independent Shakespeare Company. During the pandemic she took on the role of first AD and worked on ISC film projects: Romeo & Juliet, The Last Syllable, and Live at the Porpentine: A Comedy of Errors. Her other stage production credits around Los Angeles include Gunshot Medley, Part 1 and The Giant Void in My Soul.

MORGAN JENNESS (Dramaturgical Consultant) is a dramaturgical consultant, educator and activist who has worked in the literary office and as an Associate Producer at the Public Theater/NYSF, and as Associate Artistic Director at New York Theatre Workshop and Los Angeles Theatre Center. She has served in dramaturgical capacities at theaters and developmental situations all over the U.S. for over three decades, and has worked as a creative consultant at both the Helen Merrill and Abrams Artists agencies. Morgan has been a guest artist with multiple educational theater programs and is currently on the faculty of Columbia, Fordham, Pace University and Actor’s Studio. Morgan is also a recipient of an Obie for Long Term Support of Playwrights, the prestigious LMDA Lessing Award, the first Elsa Rael VintAge Award and a 2015 Doris Duke Impact Award. Currently, she is the Creative Director/founder of In This Distracted Globe, a dramaturgical and management consultancy.

CAMILLE JENKINS (Assistant Director) is a producer, director, writer, and teaching artist whose work lives at the crossroads of multi-medium exploration, historical introspection, environmental connection, and personal reflection. Select Credits include Unmasked: A Theatrical Celebration of Black Women’s Liberation (The Wallis and Black Rebirth Collective) co-director and producer; The Goddesses Guide: Adura for the Women of African Diaspora (Hollywood Fringe Festival) writer, director, producer; Spoken Perceptions: Interactive Poetry Showcase (Non-Fiction Gallery) producer and director; and Mama Metal (IAMA Theatre Company) associate producer. PAUL CREWES (Creative Producer) was named as the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts’ first Artistic Director in 2015, and he guided the Beverly Hills performing arts venue artistically to a new level of prominence, until he stepped down in December 2021. Each season, he brought an eclectic mix of local, national and international artists and companies to The Wallis’ stages, in theater, dance music and film. Over the years The Wallis produced many works of theater, with King Lear being Paul Crewes’ final production of his tenure for the venue. Prior to joining The Wallis, Paul Crewes was, for twelve years, Chief Executive and Executive Producer of Kneehigh Theatre, the internationally recognized U.K. company. He brought Kneehigh’s Brief Encounter, a “stunning, first-rate” production combining film with theater and adapted/directed by Emma Rice, to The Wallis for its inaugural 2013/2014 Season. He also worked throughout the U.K. in Producer and Executive Producer roles at The Lowry, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Crewes Gale Productions, which he formed, and West Yorkshire Playhouse (now Leeds Playhouse). He worked in the producing departments at Theatre Royal Plymouth, London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Paines Plough-new writing company and Bristol Old Vic, as well as Director of Technical Training at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA).

INNA FALIKS the “adventurous and passionate” (The New Yorker) Ukrainian-born American pianist, has made a name for herself through her commanding performances of standard piano repertoire, as well genre-bending interdisciplinary projects, and inquisitive work with contemporary composers. After her acclaimed teenage debuts at the Gilmore Festival and with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, she has appeared on many of the world’s great stages in recital and with many major orchestras, performing with conductors Leonard Slatkin, Keith Lockhart and many others.

Her recent seasons include performances at Ravinia Festival in Chicago, National Gallery in Washington DC, Chigiana Academy in Italy, as soloist with US orchestras nation-wide, and repeated tours of all the major venues in China.

Polonaise-Fantasie, the Story of a Pianist, which tells the story of her immigration to the United States from Odessa with music by Bach, Chopin, Gershwin and Carter (recorded on Delos).

Ms. Faliks collaborates with and premieres music by some of today’s most significant composers, including Billy Childs, Richard Danielpour, Timo Andres and Clarice Assad. She founded the awardwinning poetry-music series Music/Words in 2008, with dozens of performances in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, both on stage and on WFMT radio. She regularly tours her monologue-recital

Ms. Faliks is professor and head of Piano Studies at UCLA, and in demand world-wide as a masterclass artist and adjudicator. She is also a published writer, with articles and essays appearing in Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post, among other media outlets. Inna Faliks is a Yamaha Artist.

IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE It is with a deep well of gratitude that we at The Wallis remember the life of esteemed philanthropist, husband, father, community leader, and Founding President of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, PAUL SELWYN A stalwart figure in the Beverly Hills community for more than eight decades, Paul emigrated from Antwerp, Belgium in 1938, just before the onset of the second World War. He often recalled with fondness one of his earliest childhood memories: the vision of the Statue of Liberty, larger than life, from his position aboard the S.S. Normandy. This set the tone for an incredibly vibrant, community focused, and interesting life.

A remarkably physical young man, Paul played on the Beverly Hills High School tennis team and attended UCLA, where he was a member of the tennis and cricket teams and joined the ROTC program. After graduating, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy, and served in the Philippines. Paul subsequently took a job with the Herald International in Hong Kong before returning to Beverly Hills in 1958, where he became Vice President of Pauling and Company and serendipitously met his wife to be, Joan Selwyn née Gordon, in 1959. The two shared a love for philanthropy which suffused their relationship, and was reflected in the values with which they raised their son, Marc. In 1968, Paul became the company’s owner.

He retired in 1990, but did not slow down — merely redirected his energies to other areas of his community.

Selwyn was a Founding Board Member of the Los Angeles Children’s Museum, where he served as President and Chairman. He served on the Beverly Hills Architectural Commission from 1980 to 1986, and was appointed to the Beverly Hills Planning Commission, on which he served from 1986 to 1994, chairing both commissions twice during his terms. In 1996, Selwyn

launched and became President of the Beverly Hills Cultural Center Foundation, which later became the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. He served on The Wallis’ Board of Directors until 2014 and holds the title of Founding President. He was a member of the Beverly Hills Tennis Club for 30 years, serving as President from 1992 to 1993 and, in 2012, founded “F3,” the First Friday Forum lunch group for the business and professional communities. He also served as President of the Santa Barbara Children’s Museum from 2000-2009 and was a Trustee of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art from 2003 to 2006. In December of 2020, The Wallis was delighted to honor Mr. Selwyn at our DreamBuilders virtual benefit.

Paul passed away in his Beverly Hills home on Thursday, February 17, 2022. We send love and strength to his wife, Joan, and to his son, Marc, and daughter Laura — both Joan and Marc are Wallis Ambassadors and along with Laura, long-time supporters who share Paul’s love for The Wallis, Beverly Hills, and the arts. Paul, much like Joan and Marc, was a frequent visitor to The Wallis even outside his regular attendance at shows and other events — we consider the entire Selwyn family to be dear friends and it is with heavy hearts that we announce Paul’s passing.

Paul Selwyn will be remembered fondly by all of us — not only as a truly kind man who always had a smile for staff, artists, and patrons alike, or as a man who was deeply invested in the success of The Wallis, but as a pillar of our community and a loyal friend to many. Paul is a figure whom we have always looked to emulate in his grace and dedication.

We will always cherish our time with Paul. He left an indelible mark on our organization, and he will be truly and deeply missed.

In the upcoming issues of Performances Magazine, we will be highlighting the remarkable legacies of dedicated Wallis supporters who’ve passed away in recent months: Luanne Wells & Ginny Mancini.

FINAL CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR Applications are now being accepted for our inaugural GRAUMAN FELLOWSHIP! This program will support an emerging classical pianist or strings musician during the transition from formal education and training to the professional world.

The Fellow will have an inside look at how classical music is programmed and the essential role of philanthropic support and community outreach.

In addition to receiving a $15,000 fellowship award, the Grauman Fellow will receive mentorship from The Wallis, including live performance opportunities, guidance related to successful auditioning, and the chance to meet with and learn from leading artists.

In The Bram Goldsmith Theater TELECOIL INDUCTION SYSTEM FOR HEARING ASSISTANCE

A state of the art “hearing loop”—a thin copper wire—has been installed beneath the floor of the orchestra seating in the Bram Goldsmith Theater. For guests wearing a hearing aid with a copper telecoil wire or who have a cochlear implant, the system captures electromagnetic waves and broadcasts signals directly to your hearing aid device. For assistance, please inquire with Patron Services.
