Welcome to Hershey Felder: Chopin in Paris — The Wallis’ final engagement of its 2022/2023 season. Hershey will perform — in his signature theatrical style — some of the pianist-composer’s most beloved and enduring music.

We are delighted, for the first time since 2019, to present this crowd-favorite artist live as the finale to an eventful (and sometimes unpredictable!) and moving season.

The future looks even brighter. This summer, The Wallis will announce the recipient of the Walter & Peggy Grauman Fellowship in Classical Music.

This inaugural fellowship at The Wallis will support a classical pianist or strings musician during the transition from formal education and training to the professional music world. From September 2022 through June 2023, the Fellow will work alongside Wallis musicians and staff while creating and stewarding a community-based project that expands access to classical music in Los Angeles. The date is 4 March 1848, afternoon.

HERSHEY FELDER (Fryderyk Chopin/ Playwright/Scenic Design) Following 28 years of continuous stage work and over six thousand live performances throughout the U.S. and abroad, Hershey Felder created Live from Florence, an arts broadcasting company, which has produced more than fifteen theatrical films to date. They include the recently release Violetta, the story of Verdi’s Traviata, Dante and Beatrice, Mozart and Figaro in Vienna, the world premiere musicals Nicholas, Anna & Sergei, the story of Sergei Rachmaninoff; Puccini, the story of famed opera composer Giacomo Puccini; Before Fiddler, a musical story about writer Sholem Aleichem; Great American Songs and the Stories Behind Them, Leonard Bernstein and the Israel Philharmonic, a documentary, with two seasons of programming currently available at www.hersheyfelder.net Hershey has given performances of his solo productions at some of the world’s most prestigious theatres and has consistently broken box office records. His shows include George Gershwin Alone (Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theatre, West End’s Duchess Theatre); Monsieur Chopin; Beethoven; Maestro (Leonard Bernstein); Franz Liszt in Musik, Lincoln: An American Story, Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin, Our Great Tchaikovsky, and A Paris Love Story. His compositions and recordings include Aliyah, Concerto for Piano and Orchestra; Fairytale, a musical; Les Anges de Paris, Suite for Violin and Piano; Song Settings; Saltimbanques for Piano and Orchestra; Etudes Thematiques for Piano; and An American Story for Actor and Orchestra. Hershey is the adaptor, director, and designer for the internationally performed play-withmusic The Pianist of Willesden Lane with Steinway artist Mona Golabek; producer and designer for the musical Louis and Keely: ‘Live’ at the Sahara, directed by Taylor Hackford; and writer and director for Flying Solo, featuring opera legend Nathan Gunn.

Hershey has operated a full-service production company since 2001. He has been a scholar-in-residence at Harvard University’s Department of Music and is married to Kim Campbell, the first female Prime Minister of Canada.

JOEL ZWICK (Director) directed My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. Recent films include Fat Albert and Elvis Has Left the Building. Zwick directed the Broadway production of Hershey Felder’s George Gershwin Alone at the Helen Hayes Theatre. He began his theatrical career at La Mama E.T.C, as director of the La Mama Plexus and has directed on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Broadway touring companies. He and Hershey Felder have collaborated on Hershey Felder as Monsieur Chopin, Beethoven As I Knew Him, and Maestro. Currently, Zwick is recognized as one of Hollywood’s most prolific directors of episodic television, having the direction of over 650 episodes to his credit. New York productions have included Dance with Me (Tony nomination), Shenandoah (Broadway national tour), Oklahoma (national tour) and Cold Storage (American Place Theater). He acted in the original New York production of MacBird. He directed Esther (Promenade Theater, NY), Merry-Go-Round (Chicago and Las Vegas), Last Chance Saloon and Woycek (West End). Zwick has taught drama at Yale University, Brooklyn College, Queens College, Wheaton College, and the University of Southern California. He is a graduate (B.A., M.A.) of Brooklyn College.

TREVOR HAY (Associate Director) Directed the world premieres of An American Story for Actor and Orchestra, Abe Lincoln’s Piano, Hershey Felder as Franz Liszt in Musik, Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin, Our Great Tchaikovsky, and A Paris Love Story. He is Associate Director for Mona Golabek’s The Pianist of Willesden Lane, George Gershwin Alone, and Hershey Felder in Maestro.

Former member of the historic Old Globe Theatre in San Diego where, at the age of nine, his first position was selling Old Globe memorabilia. Over the next 32 years, Mr. Hay went on to various aspects of production on more than 80 presentations, including the Broadway productions of Jack O’Brien’s Damn Yankees, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Twyla Tharpe’s The Times They Are A-Changin’. Included in his 23 seasons at the Old Globe were eleven seasons of the Summer Shakespeare Festival Repertory, as well as work on Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County, directed by Sam Gold, and Hershey Felder’s George Gershwin Alone, Monsieur Chopin and Maestro.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

ERIK S. BARRY (Lighting Design) Erik is a freelance lighting designer based in Chicago. He received the Non-Equity Joseph Jefferson Award for 2019 for The Displaced with Haven Theatre.

His designs have been seen at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall, Harris Theatre (Chicago), and the Detroit Music Hall. He is the Resident Lighting Designer for Underscore Theatre Company and the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus.

MFA - Lighting Design: University of Wisconsin-Madison. eriksbarry.com ERIK CARSTENSEN (Sound Design/Production Manager) Erik has worked for Eighty-Eight Entertainment since 2008. He has served as sound designer on Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin, Our Great Tchaikovsky, A Paris Love Story, Maestro, Louis and Keely ‘Live’ at the Sahara, An American Story, Beethoven As I Knew Him (Ovation Award Winner), The Pianist of Willesden Lane (Ovation Award Nomination), and numerous other productions. Formerly, he was the master sound technician at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego and was production engineer on over sixty productions, including Allegiance, Robin and the Seven Hoods, A Catered Affair, Hershey Felder’s George Gershwin Alone, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Chita Rivera-A Dancer’s Life, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, The Full Monty, Dirty Blonde, and Floyd Collins.

SAMANTHA F. VOXAKIS (Producer/Company Manager) Samantha is a proud native of Maryland where she spent twelve memorable years working in the front office of the Baltimore Orioles. Since 2004, Sam has been responsible for the day-to-day operations of Eighty-Eight LLC/Hershey Felder Presents. With special thanks to her very supportive family and Mr. Felder.

HERSHEY FELDER PRESENTS (Producer) Hershey Felder Presents is the newest division of Eighty-Eight Entertainment which was created in 2001 by Hershey Felder and is devoted to the creation of new works of musical theatre. IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE LUANNE C. WELLS

It is with great fondness that we remember our beloved Board member LUANNE C. WELLS, who passed in July of 2021.

Luanne joined the Board of Directors of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (formerly known as the Beverly Hills Cultural Center Foundation) in 1998 and served as a director and member of the Executive Committee for 23 years. She was an active member of several Wallis committees including the Architect Selection Committee, Construction Committee, and Landscape Committee, and was a devoted and passionate steward of the beautifully designed campus gardens and landscape we enjoy today. As the namesake of our Wells Family Education Courtyard, she steered generous support to The Wallis early and consistently, allowing the organization to plan ambitiously to include not only performing arts, but also arts learning, education and community service in its programming.

Association, and Shambala, a rescue program for wild animals. Luanne was a graduate of Beverly Hills High School and was a beloved member of the Beverly Hills community. An avid basketball and Los Angeles Lakers fan, she was well known to and loved by all those who worked at Staples Center.

Luanne’s meaningful work across so many disciplines will forever resonate and benefit us and our community for many years to come. We remember her so fondly and mourn her loss greatly.

Outside of The Wallis, Luanne and her late husband, Frank G. Wells, former president of The Walt Disney Company, established Environment Now, where she served as Executive Chairman. Other examples of Luanne’s enlightened philanthropy encompassed the creation of the Frank G. Wells Environmental Law Clinic at UCLA and the launch of the Santa Monica Baykeeper and the San Diego Baykeeper, where she served on the Board of Directors.

She spent much of her spare time in Malibu breeding horses and other animals, as well as cultivating various species of trees.

Luanne was a member of the California Institute of the Arts’ Board of Trustees, the Getty Conservation Council, the Junior League of Los Angeles, Blue Ribbon of the Los Angeles Music Center, and served on the boards of the Bravo Colorado Vail Valley Music Festival, the Hereditary Disease Foundation, the American Diabetes

This program will support an emerging classical pianist or strings musician during the transition from formal education and training to the professional world. The Fellow will have an inside look at how classical music is programmed and the essential role of philanthropic support and community outreach. In addition to receiving a $15,000 fellowship award, the Grauman Fellow will receive mentorship from The Wallis, including live performance opportunities, guidance related to successful auditioning, ongoing support in implementing a community outreach project, and the chance to meet with and learn from leading artists.
