Dear Walker community, Over the past several years, our community members have received a Walker magazine, an annual report, and a celebration of Commencement and Honors Day in their mailboxes at various times throughout the school year. To celebrate all of the accomplishments of our students, faculty, and staff in one place, we have combined these three publications into one Year in Review.

award-winning college counseling. As you will see, these strengths are exemplified every day in our hallways and on our fields.

Middle School World Languages Explore New Ways of Learning

The latest research in secondlanguage development and acquisition points to the fact that the best way for students to acquire an additional language is to receive input that is comprehensible and accessible to students. In other words, students are immersed in an environment where they interact with the language being acquired - first by listening, and eventually, by speaking themselves.

“The brain craves production in such a way that when speaking or writing becomes expected a student will be able to produce it. Although a student may make errors in this phase of learning, the errors are easily correctable,” explained World Languages Department

Chair Randy Fields. “In many ways, comprehensible input mirrors natural language acquisition but it follows a pre-determined structure suited to a language program's goals.”

The Power of Play in Walker’s Preschool

After teaching a guidance lesson involving a single balloon in the fall of 2015, Preschool Counselor Julia Stoll was surprised at how many students continued to be drawn to this seemingly simple toy, even after the lesson had concluded.

Despite the multitude of exciting action figures and bright toys available in her office, the balloon quickly became the most in demand item. From keep-away games to tossing challenges, students simply could not get enough!

Walker’s Lower School Unveils First Honor Code

How do elementary-aged students understand the concept of honor? This intangible word may be difficult even for adults to comprehend and practice on a daily basis, so how do we walk alongside our students and children, teaching and guiding them to lead a life of honor?

In late April, during their weekly assembly, the Lower School Student Council delivered an announcement to the student body regarding the new Lower School Honor Code. The honor statements were developed by a teacher-led committee in hopes of aligning with honor expectations in Walker’s Middle and Upper School, and to give our younger students a guide for how to make personal decisions of honor.

The Lower School Honor Code presents these four important statements:

These presentations were powerful, bringing faculty to tears and engaging the student body in such a way that one could hear a pin drop in the often noisy Gatti Hall.

Barrett spoke about how our actions deliver the message of honor to others - classmates, teachers, parents, our community. When Barrett’s father asks him to mow the grass, he does so out of honor.

When he completes an assignment for his teachers, he does so out of honor. Barrett reminded our students/teachers about how our behavior and our words are the truest representations of honor.

Ally then spoke about honor, asking our student/faculty body, “What is honor?”

“To me, honor is many things.

It is an abstract word, associated with truth, integrity, morals, self-esteem, and living a life that values right from wrong,” she continued. “Don’t let the temptation of winning a game, being more popular or getting a 100% on a test get in the way of your honor. While it is OK to win the game, be popular, or get a 100% on the test, it should not compromise your honorability. When someone falls, give them a hand.

When someone feels less than popular, give them your friendship. When someone is struggling, give them your efforts. Although it may be hard at times, do what’s right, do the best you can, and mold yourself into the kind of person you want to be.”

2. I will respect myself, others, and all things around me.

3. My ideas, words, and work will be my own.

4. I will encourage others to be honest, respectful, and to do their own work.

Student Attends Cannes Film Festival

While most of her peers were getting ready to finish up the school year, senior Deb Kemp spent May of 2016 getting ready to head across the pond to France. After an intense application process, Deb was selected for internship with the American Pavilion as part of the Cannes Film Festival, where she worked in ticketing.

There were only two other high schoolers accepted into the program, with the rest of the interns being mainly undergraduate and graduate students, many as old as 30 and one as old as 65.

For five hours every day, Kemp worked obtaining and giving out invitations to festival screenings held in the Grand Théâtre Lumière, the largest of the screening rooms. Upper School Students, Faculty Display Their Unique Talents in Inaugural Winterim Session

Several years ago, Walker’s Upper School faculty members, along with members of the administration, created a Ninth Grade Steering Committee to review all aspects of Walker’s ninth grade program. While many teachers already knew what characteristics they looked for in the ideal Walker graduate, the question soon became, how do we help our students achieve this from the moment they step foot in Walker’s Upper School?

“A Walker graduate is equipped for success in college and in life with an understanding of responsibility to school, community, and the world,” said Upper School English 10

Department Chair Kate McConnaughey, who was the driving force of the Steering Committee. “To reach that level, we realized that we needed to lay the foundation starting from day one in ninth grade.”

Thus, the idea for Walker’s Ninth Grade Experience was born. This comprehensive, innovative, year-long program specifically for freshmen aims to ignite the spark of lifelong learning in teenagers while also paving the way for a successful student who demonstrates collaborative and critical thinking skills, creativity, and strong character.

The Upper School launched the Ninth Grade Experience at the start of the 2015-16 school year, with January marking Walker’s inaugural Winterim term. This three-week session allowed students to select two out of 16 vastly different total courses; their selections were then built into their existing school day in order to minimize schedule disruption for both students and teachers.

Some popular selections from the 2016 term included Intro to 3D Printing with Dr. Brady, History of Fashion with Mrs. Martello, and Who Wants to (Eventually) Be a Millionaire with Mr. Bryan. Without the

added stress of tests and homework, classes like these allowed for a greater degree of experiential learning and creative problem solving than would be normally incorporated into a standard curriculum.

For many freshmen, Winterim was also a way to see what classes students would want to take as they continue through Walker’s Upper School. “I took Economics of Sports with Mr. Arjona and Preparing for a Zombie Apocalypse with Mrs. Adams, and now really think I would like to take economics and public health classes later in high school,” said nowsophomore Patrick Wright.

“I think Winterim is a good building block for high school classes.”

Experience would not have been possible. Our teachers had the chance to showcase their areas of interest and expertise, with many giving up a planning period or shifting their schedules to do so - not that they minded.

“The entire Ninth Grade Experience was an opportunity to not just share your passions with students but to connect the academic to the personal,” said Dr. Greg Hite, who taught a class called Let’s Eat!: Food in America. “The opportunities to demonstrate the idea that what faculty do together every day in the classroom, the skill sets, the processes, the fundamental building blocks of the academic program are the very skills, processes and knowledge base that we draw upon every day to pursuits that we love outside of school were unparalleled.”

Athletics Recap 2015-2016

MS Fall

Both the A and B volleyball teams posted winning seasons as each reached the finals of NAML tournament. The A team captured the NAML championship, posting an outstanding 30-6 record, and the B team fell just short of the championship as runners-up, with an overall record of 27-4.

The A team was led by Offensive Player of the Year, Kaitlyn Rodriguez, while the B team was led by Rhodes Reddick, the team’s Most Valuable Player.

US Fall

The varsity girls cross country team qualified for the state meet after a third place finish in the region meet; on the boys' side, Chris Ott finished sixth in the region and qualified for the state meet. Varsity football fell just one game shy of .500, finishing with a 4-6 record on the season.

Varsity volleyball finished second in the Area, qualifying for the state tournament, where the Wolverines lost in the first round. Competition cheer also qualified for the state meet, and varsity softball narrowly missed the postseason, finishing 17th in the power rankings.

The girls A basketball team reached the semi-finals of the NAML tournament boasting a 13-3 record. The team took a seven-game winning streak into the semi-final game before falling to Mt. Pisgah. The team was 12

MS Winter

Athletics Recap led by the Most Outstanding Player Grace Koutouzis, Best Offensive Player Saylor Gignilliat, and their playmaker Schuyler Boyer.

The wrestling team fielded 14 members who won 70% of their matches over the course of the season. For the first time ever, Walker hosted the NAML tournament, and it proved to be an advantage for the home team, as several wrestlers reached the winners' podium. Austin Westbrook, Cam Baker and Andrew Smith each took the championship in their weight class. Dominic Parlotto and Kyle Keegan each grabbed runners-up, and Martin Dougherty and Louis Silverstein placed third. The team finished fourth overall.

US Winter

Both varsity basketball teams advanced to the region quarterfinals; the girls team did not make the state tournament, but the boys team did, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in over a decade. Numerous Walker athletes qualified for the state meet in swimming, and several school records were broken over the course of the season, sometimes more than once.

Varsity wrestling finished over .500 for the year, with six wrestlers placing in Area and advancing to the Sectional Tournament. Boys baseball advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, before falling to Providence.

MS Spring

In an unprecedented season, the girls tennis team went undefeated on their way to the NAML championship! The team was led by the performance of the Most Outstanding Player Rilee White and the leadership of the Coaches’ Award winner Rhodes Reddick.

US Spring

Girls lacrosse enjoyed its first varsity win ever and won its last three games to finish 5-6-2 on the year; varsity boys lacrosse improved its record by one game, and the JV boys finished a nice two-year run with a 16-7-1 record. In track, the varsity boys finished third in Area and the girls second. Price Willoch finished sixth in pole vault, and Mackenzie Gignilliat was third; Tyra Poole won the 400m state title and was runner-up in the 200m. Boys and girls soccer both won region titles and both advanced to the state tournament Final Four. Boys tennis was region runner-up and made it to the Elite Eight; girls tennis won a region championship and advanced to the Final Four of the state tournament.

Class of 1996 Dan Yandow ('96) and wife Elizabeth Yandow welcomed their seventh child, Julie Elizabeth Yandow, on March, 6, 2016.

Kevin Patrick ('01) and Tracy Patrick welcomed their first child, Michael Thomas, on October 9, 2015. Michael was 7 pounds, 12 ounces. Kevin also started his own law practice, Kevin Patrick Law, LLC, on January, focusing on personal injury.

Class of 2003 The Class of 1996 hosted its 20-year reunion on September 17, 2016, at Shillings on the Marietta Square.

Rachel (Zavorski) Butler ('03) and Jared Butler welcomed their first child, Charlotte Mae, on August 8, 2016, weighing 6 pounds, 11 ounces. They currently reside in Reston, VA.

Class of 1997 Cara Turano ('97) was married to Ricky Snow ('97) on April 9, 2016, at Ventana's in downtown Atlanta. The couple resides in the Atlanta neighborhood of the Old 4th Ward. Stephan Turano ('98) was the man of honor. Barron Elleby ('97), Jeff King ('97) and Michael Snow ('00) attended the groom.

Other Walker guests in attendance included Abby (Gibson) Turano ('99), Kate Shirey ('97) and Rebecca (Shirey) Beckett ('00).

Molly Jean Orr was welcomed into this world by proud parents Lindsay (Joyner) Orr ('03) and Scott Orr on February 24, 2015. The family has called Denver, Colorado home since 2009.

Jenny (Crabbe) Woodruff ('03) and Luke Woodruff were thrilled to welcome their first child, Aubrey Elizabeth, on August 24, 2015. Aubrey was born at Northside Hospital in Atlanta and was 7 pounds, 5 ounces and 20.5 inches.

Class of 2005 Adam Kay ('05) and his wife Kathryn welcomed baby Eliza on August 12, 2015.

R. J. De La Fuente ('06) has worked as a stuntman for a number of big movies and projects this last year, including the movie “Allegiant,” part of the blockbuster franchise “Divergent.” He has also worked on episodes of “Sleepy Hollow” and “Containment,” as well as helping test out the obstacles for contestants on the TV show “American Ninja Warrior.”

Megan (Reich) Rihan ('05) and Akram Rihan welcomed their first child, Caroline Bennage, on April 5, 2016 weighing, 5 pounds, 11 ounces. They currently reside in Augusta, GA. The Class of 2006 hosted its 10-year reunion at Fado in Midtown on May 21, 2016.

Class of 2007 Abby Marcinko ('07) was married to David Wexler on October 10, 2015, at the Marcinko's home in Woodstock, GA. The couple met while attending the University of Georgia. Abby works in fundraising at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and David works in systems engineering at NASCO. The couple resides in Brookhaven, GA. Lauren Marcinko Gober ('03) and Morgan Marcinko ('11) were the matron and maid of honor. Caroline Dalton Filacchione ('07), Natalie Halpern Hales ('07), and Sarah King Reid ('07) were also bridesmaids. Other Walker guests in attendance included Abby Halpern ('09), Paul Marcinko ('05), and Emily Morris ('07).

Class of 2006 David Hale ('06) married Megan Gaudet ('08) on November 14, 2015, at Barnsley Gardens Resort in Adairsville, Georgia, with many Walker friends standing beside them on the big day.

Caitlin King ('07) is currently the General Manager at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, and her organization recently partnered with Bill Frey ('95). Bill’s company, Illuminating Design, will be decorating the entire Callanwolde Estate for its upcoming Christmas Light Show. It is sure to be a beautiful event.

William LeGate ('13), a 2013 Thiel Fellow, recently co-founded and launched Ponder, a new “drama-free” social networking app backed by businessman Mark Cuban, Greylock Partners, Sean Rad, and Justin Mateen. Ponder aims to “democratize” social media by giving all users a voice. Posts trend and spread based on quality of the post versus the popularity of the person sharing it.

Class of 2008 Andreas Wilder ('08) and his wife Callie had their first child on March 6, 2016.

Class of 2014 Karmin Shute ('14) runs track for Birmingham Southern and received the highest award in her athletic conference for 2016: Voted Women's Track Athlete of the Year by the Southern Athletic Association.

Class of 2009 Evan McLean ('09) returned to Walker this March to teach an improv workshop to ninth graders as part of their Creativity Cornerstone Day. Evan now performs with the Alliance Theater. His recent theatre credits include Chip in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (OnStage Atlanta), the Cat (US/P) in The Cat in the Hat, Tootles in Peter Pan and Wendy, and in Les Misérables (Aurora Theatre), and touring with the Bright Star Touring Theatre from Asheville.

Class of 2010 After receiving her MS in Pharmacology and Physiology at Wake Forest University, Deborah Luessen ('10) has continued on to pursue her PhD in Pharmacology and Physiology. Deborah’s research concentration is in neuropharmacology and studying the neurobiology behind chronic methamphetamine, amphetamine, and alcohol abuse.

For many students, the muchanticipated summer break is filled with vacations, days at the lake, and interesting summer jobs. Summer is all about new adventures, life lessons and lasting memories. For Walker alumna Hyatt Mamoun ('14), her summer is all of that and more.

After completing her second year at the Savannah College of Art and Design, the talented videographer was notified that she had been selected as an intern for the Smithsonian and and entertainment corporation Discovery Channel. Based in noticed Mamoun’s talent and Washington, D.C., the education passion for wildlife film production. However, the Photos Courtesy of Hyatt Mamoun Discovery Channel was not the first to notice Mamoun’s incredible gifts.

Mamoun, who knew that she “was born to do one thing,” began fostering her video skills at The Walker School through the help of her multi-talented teachers and support from peers.

“At Walker, everyone knew that I wanted to pursue film. My dreams were valid at Walker and I was very supported.” Throughout her Upper School years, Hyatt was able to develop her talent and become a master of documentary storytelling and production, working closely with Richard Gibson. As the founder of The Walker News Network in 2013, Mamoun gained experience that led her to be recognized as more prepared than her peers at SCAD. The Walker graduate also credited the Upper School college advisors for helping her find her perfect fit for college, which ultimately helped her land the internship.

Being an intern at this coveted corporation is no easy task. For Mamoun, a normal day in D.C. ranged from running errands for her boss to filming clips for upcoming wildlife documentaries. Throughout her time in Washington, the artist/filmmaker was introduced to a network of successful videographers and other influential producers. Hyatt is just beginning her journey, but she knows exactly what her goals are. In the future, she hopes to produce and host documentaries or wildlife programs. There are very few female hosts of wildlife documentaries, and with Hyatt’s experience and talent she could become an iconic symbol for these productions. Hyatt has been establishing herself as the videographer to follow, and she credits much of her success to the foundation provided by Walker. She had special classes created for her under talented faculty supervision, and in turn was able to advance her skills.

Although her internship ended in late August, Hyatt’s exciting summer is just a glimpse into the incredible things Hyatt Mamoun will produce and perfect.

2015-2016 Annual Fund Support A culture of philanthropy is at the heart of a great educational institution. Revenue from tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating a child at The Walker School - or any independent school.

Nearly 5 percent of every Walker student’s education is made possible by philanthropic dollars, given through the Annual Fund. These tax-deductible contributions help bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of operating the School. Specifically, Annual Fund dollars go immediately to: • Assist with salaries and benefits that allow us to hire and sustain a team of outstanding faculty, staff, and coaches • Fund professional development opportunities for faculty in their area of expertise • Support an array of academic programs and services for all students in all divisions • Bring new technology, equipment, supplies, and other programs to the classroom • Provide resources, equipment, and programming for Walker fine arts and athletics During the 2015-2016 school year, Annual Fund dollars allowed Walker to add two new buses and expand the current bus service.

Letter from Annual Fund Chair Dear Walker Family, Whether it was helping with Secret Shop or working concessions at the game, volunteering in the classroom or attending parent organization meetings, our Walker community supported the School in many significant ways during the 2015-16 school year. Our community is a better place because of all of the ways that our parents, grandparents, alumni and community members contribute their time and resources.

The committee members and I would like to thank everyone who supported the Annual Fund, our school’s most important fundraising priority.

Walker received more than $560,000 that went to directly support the exceptional educational opportunities our children and yours receive each day. Because of your support, Walker teachers were able to take part in professional development opportunities to bring new insights and instruction into the classroom.

Our Preschoolers and Lower Schoolers were able to expand and foster their interest in STEM with our new technology programs. Upper School students were able to engage in internships with the HOBY

Leadership Society What started in 1957 as a small kindergarten class of 10 students in the basement of St. James Episcopal Church on historic Marietta Square, has grown over the last half century into an exceptional college preparatory school where meaningful relationships inspire transformative learning for nearly 1,000 students every day. Philanthropy has played a significant role in creating the Walker we enjoy today and continues to provide a strong foundation from which to build the Walker of tomorrow. Head of School’s Circle Seven headmasters have served Walker since its founding. This giving level pays tribute to their leadership and impact over the last half century.

Principal’s Circle This giving level honors the work and dedication of the School leaders who have helped challenge and inspire thousands of students over the last six decades.

St. James Circle The St. James Club derives its name from the St. James Episcopal Church on historic Marietta Square, the location where the School was originally founded in 1957 as St. James Day School by Father Joseph T. Walker.

Waterman Circle The Waterman Club recognizes the School’s 1971 move to the location on Waterman Street, south of Marietta Square, when it officially became the Joseph T. Walker School.

The Stewardship Society The Stewardship Society recognizes individuals and organizations that have made contributions totaling $25,000 or more to The Walker School. The Stewardship Society is a perpetual giving circle which continues to include additional members as they reach this level of giving through gifts to the Annual Fund, capital campaigns, honor/memorial funds or alumni giving programs. One of Walker’s most meaningful (and fun!) traditions is the alumni sibling presentation at graduation. Started in the 1980s, Walker graduates take the stage to present their younger brother or sister with their diploma. This year 47 alums returned to be part of Walker’s 36th commencement ceremony.

Alumni Wall A tradition that started more than 15 years ago as the Alumni Brick Plaza, the Alumni Wall was unveiled in 2012, and honors each graduating class since 1981. The Walker Alumni Wall, adjacent to the Bowden Library, is a growing and lasting tribute to Walker’s graduates. The wall serves as a permanent reminder of the strength of The Walker School, which is found in the creativity and talents of each of Walker’s graduates. Capital Campaign The Wonder of We: A Capital Campaign for Walker’s Innovative Future is the largest, most ambitious fundraising endeavor to date in the almost 60 years since the School’s founding. Through this campaign the School is addressing two of the four strategic goals outlined in the 2014 Long Range Plan: the purchase of contiguous land for athletics and the enhancement of our educational facilities. In November 2014, Walker closed on 18 acres of contiguous property, which paved the way to begin working on the major gifts portion of the campaign.

As we continue to work toward funding new and enhanced facilities, we would like to thank those listed below who have contributed to date.* We look forward to reaching out to more families throughout the course of the 2016-2017 school year and launching the campaign publicly on January 22, 2017.

Giving to Walker There are many opportunities, many of which are tax-deductible, to support The Walker School's outstanding programs and people. Below you will find a number of methods by which you can contribute to the Annual Fund, the School’s most important fundraising effort, as well as other forms of giving that support the School.

If you have any questions regarding the information below, please don’t hesitate to contact the Advancement Office.

Pledges The Walker School accepts and encourages pledge commitments to the Annual Fund. Pledges must be paid as a one-time payment or in installments by June 30, the end of the School’s fiscal year.

Cash Contributions Unrestricted gifts of cash are the most popular and easiest way to support Walker. The majority of gifts made to the Annual Fund come in the form of cash or check. A gift of cash receives the most generous federal income tax deduction available for charitable contributions. Gifts or pledge payments can be made online by credit card or mailed directly to the School.

Gifts of Stock and Securities Gifts of stocks or securities benefit you and the School. A gift of appreciated securities held for more than one year is one of the most tax-wise ways to make a donation. You receive the immediate fair market value as a charitable deduction and can avoid capital gains tax. To make a stock transfer, please follow the procedure listed below: 1. Instruct your broker to transfer the gift shares directly to The Walker School’s broker, Merrill Lynch.

2. The Merrill Lynch DTC# is 5198. The Merrill Lynch account number is 6AK-02002. The name of the account is The Walker School Inc. (Donations Account) 3. At the time of transfer, it is very important that your broker provide the details to the Merrill Lynch representative, Janet Cain, Private Wealth Associate, at (404) 231-2444 or by emailing her at janet_cain@ ml.com. The mailing address is: Ponder, Higgins, Jowers & Associates, Private Banking and Investment Group at Merrill Lynch, 3455 Peachtree Road, N.E., Suite 1000, Atlanta, Georgia 30326.

4. To ensure that the stock is properly accounted for, also at the time of the transfer, have your broker contact Assistant Director of Advancement, Cathy LaClaire, at (678) 581-6904 or cathy.laclaire@thewalkerschool.org, regarding the stock transfer.

Matching Gifts Many employers will match and in some cases triple the amount of your contribution to Walker through a matching gift program. Contact your Human Resources department or the Advancement Office to find out if this opportunity is available through your employer.

Planned Gifts Walker encourages and appreciates future gifts made through one’s estate. Bequests are the most common way for donors to make their ultimate gift to the School. If you are interested in learning more about gift planning, we are happy to help you determine how and when to make a gift and with what assets that can, in some cases, benefit both you and the School in your lifetime.
