Walker Kindergarteners enjoy a morning lesson, circa 1964

For almost 60 years, The Walker School’s parents,

friends and families have selflessly given of their time, talent and resources to ensure our mission is fulfilled for every generation of Walker students. What started as a small kindergarten class of 10 students in the basement of St. James Episcopal Church on the historic Marietta Square, has grown over the last half century into an exceptional college preparatory school.

At Walker, challenging academics are balanced within our nurturing environment. Our dedicated faculty are able to create meaningful relationships with their students, giving them the confidence to explore the boundless opportunities in front of them. And when they are ready to take that next step into college, our award-winning college counseling program provides expert guidance, leading each student to find their best fit. It is through the act of giving that Walker is able to maintain this unique environment for nearly 1,000 students every day. We thank each and every donor listed in the following pages for their generous support – which makes all these things possible.

Message from the Head of School As I begin my fifth year at Walker, I continue to be so grateful for the generosity of our school community. Parent volunteers in every division, students reaching out to help other students, faculty/staff going above and beyond; generosity is a mindset at The Walker School. The Annual Fund is a great example of this spirit of giving. Parents who invest in their child’s education at Walker go the extra mile when they also give to the Annual Fund; former parents who have long since completed their financial obligation to the school continue to give to the Annual Fund out of a sense of gratitude; alumni give in honor of both the great teachers who inspired them and the fabulous education they received in these halls. And these gifts make a huge difference. Walker’s Annual Fund reached new heights in 2014-15, as total giving surpassed $615,000 and parent participation eclipsed 90% for the first time in school history. As a result of such outstanding generosity, two critically important aspects of our school are elevated. First, because the overwhelming majority of the funds raised by the Annual Fund are invested in the school program, Walker’s core strengths - academic challenge, nurturing environment, dedicated faculty/staff, meaningful relationships, boundless opportunities, and award-winning college counseling - are enhanced to a greater degree. Second, when major donors see such strong financial support and participation, they are inspired to consider transformational gifts to The Walker School. Specifically, I would like to thank Annual Fund Chair Kim Epstein and her team, as well as Walker’s Advancement team of Shelly Manuel, Cathy LaClaire, and Laura Nelson, for their efforts in making the 2014-15 Annual Fund such a wonderful success. With gratitude,

Jack Hall Head of School

“The one investment I never question is the investment made in our children’s education at The Walker School.” - Heath Garrett, Walker parent

Message from the Annual Fund Committee Chair Dear Walker Family, I have had the pleasure of working with a dedicated and energetic group of Annual Fund volunteers for the 2014-2015 year. On behalf of this wonderful group of parents, I would like to thank you for your generosity. Because of you, our school was able to reach a historic milestone -- 90% family participation in the Annual Fund for the first time ever! I would also like to thank Walker’s faculty and staff and Trustees for their continued support of the Annual Fund with their 100% participation year after year. The strong culture of philanthropy is a testament to the commitment of our community to enriching the opportunities for students, teachers and families. Every Annual Fund gift ensures that our children continue to receive an exceptional educational experience by providing resources that enhance our classrooms, provide unlimited opportunities through our academic, fine arts, and athletic programs, on-going curriculum training for our faculty, and operating support for the school’s budget. I have the privilege to again work with passionate and committed volunteers of the Annual Fund this year as we re-ignite the spark for our current 2015-2016 school year. Thank you for your generous support of The Walker School. Sincerely,

Kim Epstein 2014-2015 Annual Fund Chair

2014-2015 Annual Fund The Walker Annual Fund relies on a committee of dedicated parent volunteers to educate our community about the important role philanthropy plays in the life of the School. Personal contact from parent representatives helps encourage giving and ensure that Walker students experience excellence in teaching and learning in and out of the classroom. We are deeply grateful to the members of the 2014-2015 Annual Fund Committee for leading what was the most successful fundraising drive in the School’s history.

Challenging Academics

are possible.

At Walker, we are able to develop our own instructional priorities, ones that reflect the continued importance of critical thinking, creativity and collaboration. Here, a student in Thomas Cooper’s Advanced Topics in Computer Science class works with one of Emily Adams’ Biology students to create interactive brain games using Arduino software. They then use the games to teach our Preschool classes about the brain.

Meaningful Relationships

become possible.

At Walker, the meaningful relationships our students have with their teachers and with each other form the core of our educational experience and are the heart of our community. Because Walker is Preschool through 12th grade our students enjoy lots of opportunities for cross-divisional interaction, which makes learning both valuable and fun. (Photo: Upper School students visit a Preschool art class to help our youngest Wolverines write poems about color.)

Leadership Society What started in 1957 as a small kindergarten class of 10 students in the basement of St. James Episcopal Church on the historic Marietta Square, has grown over the last half century into an exceptional college preparatory school where meaningful relationships inspire transformative learning for nearly 1,000 student every day. Philanthropy has played a significant role in creating the Walker we enjoy today and continues to provide a strong foundation from which to build the Walker of tomorrow. The Leadership Society recognizes donors who made a gift of $1,500 or more to the Annual Fund, the School’s main giving priority, during the 2014-2015 year. We are grateful for their support of the School’s mission through their generosity and giving.

Grandparent Contributors Grandparents play a vital role in the lives of our Walker students. Whether it’s attending Grandparents Day, cheering their student athletes on in a game, being part of a standing ovation at one or more performing arts programs or just stopping by for lunch or a session as Mystery Reader in the Preschool, Walker grandparents are a valued part of our community. Our grandparents continue to demonstrate their commitment to the school through their contributions to the Annual Fund. Thank you for your generous support of all Walker students!

is possible.

With more than 70% holding advanced degrees, Walker faculty members are experts in their subject and have the unique ability to engage and inspire their students. Upper School Visual Arts teacher Bob Petersen works with a student in the new Ceramics class, added to our fine arts offerings in the 2014-2015 school year. The Annual Fund helps fund new classes and programs, like this one, in all division levels.

Through giving...

Boundless Opportunities

are possible.

At Walker, opportunities abound! Our students can pursue their passions whether they are academic, artistic or athletic in nature…and many Walker students have a passion for all three areas. With 26 AP and post-AP courses, 54 varsity and junior varsity sports teams, 26 fine arts performances per year, and 148 extracurricular activities and clubs, Walker students have opportunities to learn and explore unlike any other. Message from the Board of Trustees Chair I would like to thank the Walker community for your generous support. As we all work to make Walker the best school possible, it is inspiring to see so many faculty/staff members, parents, grandparents, alumni, past parents, and friends of the school giving of their time, talents and philanthropic dollars. The 2014-2015 school year was an exciting step forward for the future of The Walker School. The Board rolled out its Long Range Plan, and on November 17, 2014, realized one of our strategic goals through the purchase of nearly 18 acres of contiguous property. This purchase will impact generations of students and allows us to move forward with another critical goal of upgrading our facilities for academic, arts and athletics. The Board also continues to work to grow the endowment and strengthen our marketing and communications efforts. Achieving these goals would not be possible without the donors that have been highlighted in this report. The generosity of many and tireless work of countless volunteers, including our Board with their strategic vision, are two of the treasures that make Walker such an incredible school. As a Walker parent and parent of alumni, I am humbled and honored to work on behalf of the school. I want to reiterate my appreciation for the investment that Walker families make in our students, faculty and programs. We look forward to another successful year in 2015-2016. Sincerely,

Cheryl Barre Chair, Board of Trustees

Georgia Qualified Education Expense Credit Program Passed into law in May 2008 by the Georgia Legislature, this tax credit program allows Georgia taxpayers to redirect a portion of their state income taxes to provide scholarship assistance to benefit eligible, incoming private school students that are currently enrolled in public school. The program allows taxpayers to have a say in how their tax dollars are spent while also helping a deserving student benefit from a Walker education. We appreciate all the families and friends below, who, in addition to their annual support of the school, took advantage of the tax credit and helped provide financial aid for incoming students during the 2014 and/or 2015 year. Ways to Give Giving to Walker There are many opportunities to support The Walker School’s outstanding programs and people, nearly all of which are tax-deductible. Below you will find a number of methods by which you can contribute to the Annual Fund, the School’s most important fund raising effort, as well as other forms of giving that support the school. If you have any questions regarding the information below please do not hesitate to contact the Advancement Office.

Pledges The Walker School accepts and encourages pledge commitments to the Annual Fund. Pledges must be paid as a one-time payment or in installments by June 30, the end of the School’s fiscal year.

Cash Contributions Unrestricted gifts of cash are the most popular and easiest way to support Walker. The majority of gifts made to the Annual Fund come in the form of cash or check. A gift of cash receives the most generous federal income tax deduction available for charitable contributions. Gifts or pledge payments can be made online by credit card or mailed directly to the school.

Gifts of Stock and Securities Gifts of stocks or securities benefit you and the School. A gift of appreciated securities held for more than one year is one of the most tax-wise ways to make a donation. You receive the immediate fair market value as a charitable deduction and can avoid capital gains tax. To make a stock transfer, please follow the procedure listed below: 1. Instruct your broker to transfer the gift shares directly to The Walker School’s broker, Merrill Lynch. 2. The Merrill Lynch DTC# is 5198. The Merrill Lynch account number is 6AK-02002. The name of the account is The Walker School Inc. (Donations Account) 3. At the time of transfer, it is very important that your broker provide the details to the Merrill Lynch representative, Janet Cain, Private Wealth Associate, at (404) 231-2444 or by emailing her at janet_cain@ml.com. The mailing address is: Ponder, Higgins, Jowers & Associates, Private Banking and Investment Group at Merrill Lynch, 3455 Peachtree Road, N.E., Suite 1000, Atlanta, Georgia 30326. 4. To ensure that the stock is properly accounted for, also at the time of the transfer, have your broker contact Laura Nelson, at (678) 581-6914 or laura.nelson@thewalkerschool.org, regarding the stock transfer.

Matching Gifts Many employers will match, and in some cases, triple the amount of your contribution to Walker through a matching gift program. Contact your Human Resources department or the Advancement Office to find out if this opportunity is available through your employer.

Planned Gifts Walker encourages and appreciates future gifts made through one’s estate. Bequests are the most common way for donors to make their ultimate gift to the School. If you are interested in learning more about gift planning, we are happy to help you determine how and when to make a gift and with what assets that can, in some cases, benefit both you and the School in your lifetime.

Mission and Promise Statement Mission The Walker School is the college-preparatory independent school for families seeking an engaging educational experience within an intimately scaled, caring and diverse community where opportunities abound and meaningful relationships inspire transformative learning.

Promise Statement The Walker School is Cobb County’s college-preparatory independent school for families seeking an engaging, perspective-widening academic program within an intimately scaled, caring environment where meaningful relationships engender transformative learning. Walker’s dedicated teachers exude contagious intellectual energy, demonstrate authentic interest in the life of the mind that extends beyond their core subject areas, and model genuine respect for students and one another. Through their actions and interactions, Walker teachers cultivate students’ spirit of wanting to know in every setting—the classroom and the hallway, the laboratory and the library, the art studio and the stage, the court and the playing field. Walker students, feeling known and encouraged by their teachers and classmates, come to value the experience over the applause, developing along the way the confidence to explore new avenues of thinking, the wisdom to articulate meaningful insights, and the fortitude to act with integrity and honor. At the culmination of this carefully guided, increasingly independent journey from Early Learners through grade 12, Walker graduates have evolved from curious young learners into critically thinking, individually expressive, confidently collaborative, and admirably honest young adults thoroughly prepared for the intellectual and relational challenges of college and life.
