Agreement with Trump administration will expand R&D, manufacturing

RIDGEFIELD – The biopharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim will invest $10 billion through 2028 to expand its pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing operations in the U.S. The agreement excludes the German pharmaceutical maker from potential U.S. tariffs.

The company announced the agreement Friday, Dec. 19, with the Trump Administration to lower the cost of medicines for American patients, in line with the conditions set out by President Trump in his letter to the pharmaceutical industry dated July 31, 2025. This includes participating in a direct purchasing platform, TrumpRx. gov, that will allow American patients to purchase medicines from Boehringer at a significant discount.

Boehringer’s investment includes $1 billion dedicated specifically for capital expenditures. It is also part of Boehringer’s broader six-year plan to invest $20 billion across both its human pharmaceuticals and animal health businesses in the U.S. “Boehringer Ingelheim has a long history of addressing chronic diseases and supporting patients in their care journey,” said Jean-Michel Boers, president and CEO, Boehringer Ingelheim, USA Corporation based in Ridgefield.

“Around 70 million Americans are suffering from cardiovascular, renal, metabolic diseases, and of those, 35 million have chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Most are unaware and won’t find out they have CKD until damage is done, leading to poor health outcomes.”

While Boehringer’s human pharma headquarters is based in Ridgefield, its animal pharma headquarters is in Georgia. In the U.S., the company’s footprint extends to more than 20 sites nationwide including manufacturing facilities, R&D centers and partner locations.

Bronxville theater on the market: current nonprofit operator hopes to buy

The Bronxville movie theater at 84 Kraft Ave. is being marketed for sale and the current operator, The Picture House Regional Film Center, hopes to be able to buy it. The Film Center, which is the nonprofit that has been operating the Pelham Picture House at 175 Wolfs Lane in Pelham, expanded to also operate the three-screen Bronxville theater after owner and operator Bow Tie Cinemas was forced to close the theater as a result of the Covid pandemic.

The Bronxville Theater opened in September of 1926, and at that time had a single screen and a seating capacity of more than 1,100. It was remodeled in 1960. In 1980, former owner United Artists Theaters divided it into three auditoriums. The Picture House Regional Film Center reopened the theater in 2022 with a 10-year lease from Bow Tie. The Picture House Regional Film Center describes itself as “a community-based, mission-driven, non-profit alternative to commercial movie theaters, presenting the best in independent, international, documentary, and classic cinema.

Clayton Bushong, executive director of the Film Center, told Westfair’s Westchester County Business Journal, “We were very excited that the building came on the market. It’s turns 100 years old

in 2026. The Pelham Picture House is 105 years old. We love Bronxville and Bronxville has welcomed us with open arms, everyone from the mayor who is a huge supporter to board members who have joined. It’s a great place for us to show our films and teach classes.”

Bushong said that the downturn in the commercial movie theater exhibition business caused by the rise in video streaming of movies poses a financial problem for theater operators. He noted that the film companies sometimes take up to 70% of the box office admissions as their film rental charges.

“We have to make sure we can deliver a ‘world-class experience’ and keep the community alive but also

have a responsibility to do it financially responsibly,” Bushong said.

“Most of these historic theaters were not built in the way movie theaters are built now. About 50% of our operating budget is raised through grants, such as state grants through people like State Sen. Shelley Mayer and Assembymember Amy Paulin, and county support through County Executive Ken Jenkins. We apply for a lot of grants with ArtsWestchester.”

Bushong said that in programming the theater they look for feedback from the community. He described first grade school children in the Bronxville schools having made a movie with instructors at the Film Center and then coming in with their parents for a screening event, complete with popcorn.

“I think it means a lot to the community that we stay there,” Bushong said. “Every restaurant down the block tells us that when we have a popular movie the restaurant does better.”

Bushong said that they’re planning a retrospective of movies by the late director and actor Rob Reiner in January and will be doing in-depth Black History Month programming in February.

“We have Senior Tuesdays where every Tuesday at 2:30 in Bronxville and Pelham seniors can come and watch whatever movie we’re showing for free. We sometimes see hundreds of seniors on Tuesdays.”

Bushong said that the property owner is offering the various businesses in the building their own properties in a condominium-style arrangement.

“They’re selling each of the businesses their own properties and ours is the largest so it’s the highest value.

I hope we can come to an arrangement. Right now we’re a little further away than we want to be. We’re talking to the landlord and hope to work something out.”

CACI to acquire ARKA Group of Danbury for $2.6B

DANBURY – Defense contractor ARKA Group has agreed to be purchased by CACI International Inc. of Reston, Va., for $2.6 billion in an all cash transaction, according to an announcement made Monday.

CACI International, a national security firm, said that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire ARKA from funds managed

by Blackstone Tactical Opportunities (Blackstone) in an all-cash transaction.

Aligned with CACI’s commitment to delivering advanced technology for national security customers, ARKA supports national security missions through its space-based sensor portfolio and ground-based software processing.

“The acquisition of ARKA represents a significant step forward in our space strategy,” said John Mengucci, CACI president and CEO. “They bring deep experience and proven performance as a best-in-class provider of national security space and defense capabilities, which has been enhanced by Blackstone’s constructive stewardship of the business during their ownership.

“With a shared heritage spanning more than 60 years, CACI and ARKA address complex mission requirements and deliver future-ready solutions at the speed and scale required to expand the limits of national security.”

ARKA, which is a solutions provider in the U.S. military and space programs, sees the acquisition as key to the company’s growth, according to President and CEO Andreas Nonnenmacher.

“I am confident that CACI will provide outstanding pathways for our employees to thrive,” Nonnenmacher said. “Our aligned mission-focused cultures and deep engineering roots create a strong foundation for future innovation and growth, and our customers will benefit right away from the expanded capabilities of the combined company.”

As a result of the transaction, CACI expects to realize a tax benefit with a present value of $225 million. CACI expects the transaction to close in the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

GREENWICH – Greenwich Historical Society this week has acquired “Tidal Dam and Bridge, Cos Cob,” a significant pastel by Childe Hassam, a towering figure in American Impressionism.

Donated by a Greenwich family in memory of their son André, the acquisition is on the heels of Impressionist works donated to the Historical Society by Greenwich resident Susan Larkin.

“We are deeply grateful for this gift of a major Hassam work,” said Carol Cadou, executive director and CEO of Greenwich Historical Society.

“Our status as a National Historic Landmark stems from the Holley House being at the heart of the Cos Cob art colony — the first Impressionist community in Connecticut and a cradle of American Impressionism. The Hassam pastel enables us to expand on that legacy, which is a powerful connection to a defining moment in our nation's history.”

A founding member of the Cos Cob art colony, Childe Hassam was inspired by the landscape of the Lower Landing at the banks of the Mianus River. From 1894 to 1917, he made extended stays at the Holley Boarding House (now the Bush-Holley House), where he experimented across mediums, from oil and pastels to etchings.

The newly acquired pastel is a testament to one of Hassam's most productive periods. During an extended stay with his wife Maud in 1902, Hassam captured the local landscape in vivid detail, completing 20 pastels and several oil paintings, including this depiction of the local tidal dam, earthen works and bridge.

Hassam’s pastel offers a fresh perspective that complements an etching of the same scene already in the Historical Society collection.

“These two different mediums, viewed together, provide an intimate and exacting look at the composition of the historic neighborhood,” said Historical Society Curator Kathy Craughwell-Varda. “Considering there aren’t any photographs of the area, we are now able to understand

Ban on Hudson River barge parking becomes law

They’re also a serious threat to local fish and aquatic life, whose habitat would be destroyed if

Jeremy Cherson, who is the associate director of government affairs for the organization Riverkeeper that also pushed for Hudson River protections, said, “More than 10,000 New Yorkers spoke up with Riverkeeper when the U.S. Coast Guard proposed new anchorage sites for large tankers and barges. This bill sends a clear message that the Hudson River is no longer open for industrial exploitation.”

Gary Bassett, mayor of the Village of Rhinebeck and chair of the group Hudson 7, an intermunicipal council representing seven mid-Hudson municipalities that rely on the Hudson River as a drinking water source, said that even with the new law the group will continue to monitor activities that could threaten the Hudson River as a drinking water source.

Municipalities in the group are the Town of Esopus, Town of Hyde Park, Town of Lloyd, Town and City of Poughkeepsie, and the Town and Village of Rhinebeck located in Dutchess and Ulster Counties.

The New York City watershed covers more than 200,000 acres primarily in the Catskill Mountains, where most of the City’s drinking water originates.

All of that water ultimately passes through the Kensico Reservoir on its way to homes and businesses across the region.

DEP already owns land along the entire shoreline of the Kensico Reservoir and several nearby parcels. DEP says that adding the newly acquired forested 48-acre property increases protection

The $12.56 million spent for the land is said to be the most spent in a single watershed purchase in the DEP’s history. All of the newly purchased land is within the Kensico Reservoir watershed.

of natural streams and hillsides that help filter stormwater before it reaches the reservoir. By controlling what runs into the reservoir the city has been able to ensure that the water meets standards and does not have to be put through a filtration plant.

“Clean, safe drinking water is vital for all New Yorkers,” said New York Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins of Yonkers. “This historic $12.56 million purchase near the Kensico Reservoir is a major step in protecting our water supply for generations to come. The Kensico Reservoir has supplied water to New York City since 1915.

It can hold up to 30 billion gallons of water and typically handles about 90% of the city’s total drinking water supply, as well as water for much of Westchester County.

Remember the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon and Spa at The Westchester in White Plains? Although it became a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic, it in a sense lives on at Farida Studio Inc., also in White Plains, which we reported on in July 2024. The Red Door connection has been underscored by the spa’s expansion, from 4,500 square feet to 7,500 square feet, including two more treatment rooms, bringing that total to eight; a salon offering hair, nail and makeup services; and a room devoted to the Yume Head Spa, a Japanese hair and scalp treatment system.

“In fact, a team of eight senior hair stylists have joined us,” Farida said. “And yes, they all previously worked with us at Red Door. The build-out from planning to completion took a year. Although challenging, I have to say that our contractors and vendors were amazing, and we are thrilled with the new space.”

Eye on Small Business was delighted to renew old acquaintance with Farida, who always had big plans for her aesthetics business: Farida, tell us about your background. Was the spa an early passion?

“I was born and raised in Neelankarai, a small village in South India.

As a child my mother taught me the importance of skin care. In India, I became a professional aesthetician and worked as a teacher in a cosmetology school.

“I married an American and migrated to the U.S. in 2010. Once I came to the U.S., I became a licensed aesthetician and joined Red Door (in The Westchester) in 2013 as the head of aesthetics….”

You opened Farida Studio in the middle of Covid. Was that because you were already committed to opening and were some way “down the line” – otherwise it sounds like a brave, certainly risky – thing to do. Can you elaborate, please?

“Sadly, when Covid hit, the owners of Red Door filed liquidation bankruptcy and closed all 30

locations. Overnight I lost my job, my team and my clients. My passion for the business drove my decision to create my own brand and open my own wellness and beauty business. I started with one room on Hamilton Avenue in White Plains. I hired two team members from Red Door and opened for business in June of 2020, once the Covid restrictions were lifted.”

You say on your website that "Beauty is an experience, not a service.” Can you expound on that a little?

“At its core, Farida Studio is a hospitality business.

The people we serve are our ‘guests,’ not customers or clients. Our philosophy is to provide the guests with some time to de-link from the stresses of life and feel welcome as a member of the Farida family.”

As much as it’s possible to say, what’s the broad demographic of your “guests”?

“Our guest profile spans all generations. We offer antiaging as well as teen acne treatments. Hair services range from traditional perms to the latest trend in hair styles. In many cases, we provide treatments for the whole family, mom, dad, teens and grandparents.”

In relatively tough economic times, are guests still “spending”? Can you give us an idea of the average guest spend?

“Wellness and beauty needs are generally a top priority even in tough economic times. All of the treatments we offer are primarily a necessity delivered within a luxurious experience. The average guest spends about $200 per visit.”

After a basic cut and color, what is your most popular treatment?

“Our most popular wellness experience is our signature facial, which gets rave reviews on Google.”

Any plans for further expansion in, say, the next five years?

Serving a different kind of 1 percenter

Nathaniel Beers, M.D., MPA, FAAP, wanted to be a pediatrician from the time he himself was a child growing up in Washington D.C. It was a desire reinforced by working at a camp for disabled kids while he was in high school.

“Part of my job is to create a voice for patients and families to be seen and heard,” said Beers, who most recently served as executive vice president of Community and Population Health at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., and previously held leadership positions across the health, education and social service sectors, as president of the HSC Health Care System and COO and chief of Specialized Instruction for the D.C. Public Schools, along with senior roles in the D.C. Department of Health.

and CEO of Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, succeeding Larry Levine, whose 26-year tenure saw the hospital transformed from a pediatric rehabilitation center founded in 1891 into a nationally recognized specialty hospital serving hundreds of medically complex children each year, one of only 15 such facilities in the country. With an undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester, a medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government,Beers has arrived at a moment when further transformation – as well as challenges – are afoot.

The hospital has applied to the town of Mount Pleasant, of which Valhalla is a hamlet, to increase the

number of long-term care beds with “largely new construction,” Beers said. (The 17,000-square-foot Steven and Alexandra Cohen Pediatric Long Term Care Pavilion, which opened in 2016, has 24 beds that are at 100% occupancy.)

Other major building projects since 2011 include a 56,000 squarefoot Inpatient Hospital with 94 beds, of which about 80 are occupied; the 8,000-square-foot Robert Stone Day Hospital; the 6,000-square-foot Stavros Niarchos Center for Speech Pathology & Audiology; the Milton Spahn Therapy Village; and a new Simulation Lab and Parent Training Center.

Blythedale also has a Family Resource Center and an Early Childhood Center for young children with special medical needs as well as an on-site public school district, the Mount Pleasant Blythedale UFSD – the only one of its kind in the country. These

facilities are all in service of the most fragile kind of 1-percenter. That is the percentage of the pediatric population that Beers said can be described as medically complex – requiring everything from special feeding to recovery from traumatic brain injury. These children, who range from less than a year old to age 18, need intensive nursing and therapy from the roughly 500 full-time staffers, along with part-timers and per-diem employees.

(See sidebar.) Parents of patients also need training, as more than 85% of the patients will be going home. The goal is to provide parents with the training and support that will enable the youngsters to receive the same kind of care at home that they do at Blythedale, Beers said.

The medical challenges encountered by these families have been compounded by the cuts to states’ Medicaid funding and coverage contained in the Congressional budget reconciliation bill,

“We are a safety net hospital,” Beers said. “We are serving underserved communities….It’s not clear yet how New York will implement the changes and whether it will cover the loss.”

What is clear, he added, is that Medicaid cuts would “increase the number of patients we have who are not insured.”

It’s not just the children’s insurance that must be considered. It’s that of the parents, particularly now that coverage under the Affordable Care Act, known informally as Obamacare, is set to spike with its subsidies expire Wednesday, Dec. 31. Four Republican congressmen – including the Hudson Valley’s Mike Lawler – broke ranks to join the Democrats to force a vote in the House of Representatives on extending the subsidies for three years – a vote that will take place in early January.

Meanwhile, the House has passed a Republican-backed bill that instead is designed to expand association health plans, lower premiums for some ACA enrollees and enact reforms aimed at decreasing drug costs. For many families, however, this may be cold comfort.

“When a parent loses coverage, the

family is less likely to maintain insurance, even if the children are eligible for other benefits….Parents with a child with disabilities already spend more out of pocket.”

Rising insurance premiums and Medicaid cuts are “putting pressure on already struggling families.”

The pressure is on Blythedale as well. With an operating budget of $123 million, the hospital is projecting a $1 million to $2 million revenue loss as a result of the Medicaid cuts, with 2027 and ’28 being potentially the years of “greatest uncertainty.”

Most of the hospital’s revenues come from billable inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital receives $4 million to $4.5 million from philanthropies and is looking at how it can expand giving from this sector.

“We all have something more to give, whether it’s time or money,” Beers said.

In the meantime, the hospital will continue to move forward, expecting staff and patients alike to be fully vaccinated as per the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the New York state Department of Health. “The population is ever more at risk,” he added.

Just as necessary – the special services Blythedale provides.

“We’re the hospital no one wants to have to use,” Beers said. “But we’re here if you need us.”

BLYTHEDALE NEGOTIATES WITH RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS SEEKING INCREASED COMPENSATION

Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla is negotiating with respiratory therapists, who held a day of action outside the hospital Dec. 9 to address wages and a pension that they said do not reflect their years of specialized service to medically fragile children and their families.

The respiratory therapists are represented by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East – which has more than 450,000 members throughout New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida and Washington, D.C. "When I leave work, I leave fulfilled," said Sevdiana Dzaferovic, a respiratory therapist at Blythedale since 2018. "We understand how valuable the work we do is – and it feels rewarding. But that feeling is not enough. We deserve to be valued as professionals and compensated fairly."

Added Sean Resto: “We use advanced protocols you won’t find anywhere else. We use the full scope of our training every day. Yet we make $8 to $10 an hour less than other local RTs. We live in one of the

most expensive areas in the country and should earn decent wages and be able to retire someday.”

Latimer leads effort to help small businesses cope with tariff refunds

Congressman George Latimer, who represents New York’s 16th Congressional District that includes parts of Westchester and the Bronx, led a group of 20 other members of the House in calling for the Trump administration to be prepared to help small businesses apply for and receive refunds of tariffs should the U.S. Supreme Court rule that Trump’s tariffs are illegal.

The Supreme Court has heard oral arguments in the government’s appeal of lower court decisions that decided Trump’s tariffs imposed via an April 2, 2025 Executive Order were illegal.

Trump imposed the tariffs on his own using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act as his authority to do so. It normally is Congress that has the power to impose tariffs.

Latimer led 20 of his colleagues in sending a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem expressing concern that the Departments of Trea-

sury and Homeland Security aren’t prepared to handle what likely would be a deluge of claims for refunds if the Supreme Court upholds the lower courts.

The letter also calls on both departments to immediately dedicate sufficient resources and personnel ahead of the court’s decision, with a focus on aiding America’s small businesses. The letter calls on the departments to begin an outreach campaign so that small businesses will know what to do to file complaints about the tariffs they’ve paid in order to have the right to follow up with claims for refunds.

“There is a strong likelihood the court will uphold these prior decisions, and order that amounts imposed on American businesses be made available for return,” the letter said. “Those amounts are estimated by different sources anywhere between $120 billion and $1 trillion and growing every day while the court waits to issue a decision.”

The members of Congress said in the letter, “We urge that sufficient staffing and resources be allocated for the efficient intake, processing, hearing and determination of protests against tariffs imposed under the Executive Order and subsequently determined unlawful, with the aim of providing tariff refunds on an expedited basis to all eligible petitioners. We also ask

that a wide-reaching informational campaign be quickly implemented by the departments targeted to American small businesses so that they may have all the resources available to enable them to navigate the complexity of the protest process without the disadvantage of lacking the resources of a large company.”

In a speech on the House floor, Latimer said, “President Trump’s tariff policies have hurt small business who often cannot absorb the cost of higher duties. Now the economy is showing warning signs: unemployment has risen to 4.6% and small businesses shed 120,000 jobs in November alone.

Proper planning is needed around an information campaign for small businesses on how to navigate the tariff protest process, ensuring that eligible tariff refunds are provided on an expedited basis. Without a plan the complexity and time needed to pursue a refund will further burden small businesses. I urge the Trump administration to work quickly to guarantee that small businesses, the lifeline of our economy, are not left behind because of this erratic policy.”

Benchmark senior facility opens in Thornwood

Benchmark at Mount Pleasant, located at 2 Zeiss Drive in Thornwood, has opened as Benchmark Senior Living’s latest community for seniors. Benchmark, which is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, was founded in 1997 by the company’s Chairman and CEO Tom Grape. It operates 70 communities throughout the Northeast, with two in New York and nine in Fairfield County.

Benchmark has one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments along with rooms and suites for memory care.

Amenities include a movie theater and card room. Services include memory care for people who have issues such as Alzheimer’s or dementia and assisted living care.

“We’re proud to be Thornwood’s first assisted living community and look forward to supporting residents and their families for many years to come,” said Sara Humphreys, executive director of Benchmark at Mount Pleasant.

The project was presented to the Mount Pleasant Planning Board with plans for 74 assisted living and 26 memory care units. Benchmark developed the project with Shelbourne Healthcare Development Group LLC. The site plans for the project were approved in 2022 by the Town of Mount Pleasant.

Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens has been transforming lives for 60 years

STAMFORD — Nature can transform lives. That philosophy has been at the forefront of the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens since it was established in 1965.

Nestled among the historic landscape of southwestern New England in Stamford, the arboretum is known as nature’s sanctuary where people can explore, enjoy, and savor the beauty of the natural environment and also learn about the habitats of the natural world. This year, the 93-acre property is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

“Reaching our 60-year milestone has been both humbling and energizing,” said Margo Reitz, executive assistant. “The arboretum has always been a place where people feel connected to nature, to learning, and to one another. Celebrating six decades of that shared experience reminds us how meaningful this place is to so many and how important it is to steward it thoughtfully for the next 60 years and beyond,” Open year-round, dawn-to-dusk, the arboretum, named a Top 50 Green Space by HGTV, is a nonprofit organization in partnership with the City of Stamford that serves as a public garden, educational campus, and community gathering space.

“Our mission is to cultivate and develop a diverse collection of trees, gardens, and plants for all to explore, enjoy, and study,” said arboretum CEO Tracy Kay. “Through education and stewardship, we work to create a greener, healthier, and more beautiful environment for our community.”

The arboretum includes open space and award-winning Champion trees, woodlands, wetlands, meadows, carefully cultivated specialty gardens, maple wetlands and boardwalks, woodland walking trails, varied wildlife and native habitats.

“It serves as a peaceful public landscape and a vibrant educational resource,” Reitz said. “Iconic features include our nationally recognized Conifer Collection, Champion Trees, the Red Maple Wetland Boardwalk, diverse wildlife habitats, and seasonal gardens such as our pollinator and shade gardens. The arboretum evolves with each season and offers new discoveries all year.”

Every year, it hosts more than 450 programs, classes, tours, and commu-

nity events, welcoming more than 8,000 participants of all ages. “These offerings include school field trips, youth camps, adult workshops, seasonal festivals, guided nature walks, horticulture classes, and summer concerts,” Reitz said. “The Bartlett provides a rare blend of natural refuge, environmental education, and community connection. Families discover and learn together here, students experience a living classroom, and nature lovers find inspiration in every season. For the broader community, the arboretum is a restorative green space that supports well-being, biodiversity, and a sense of belonging.”

The arboretum marked the anniversary by hosting programs and community gatherings including its annual gala, guided tours, exhibitions, and educational programs. One of the activities was 60 Years / 60 Trees, a series of six seasonal guided walks led by the arboretum’s Master Gardeners that highlighted 60 unique trees.

“We chose this approach because our trees are the living legacy of the Bartlett,” Reitz said. “They tell our story, anchor our collections, and inspire curiosity in visitors of all ages.

Celebrating the anniversary through our trees felt authentic, meaningful, and directly tied to our mission.”

ARBORETUM HISTORY

In 1965, the State of Connecticut purchased Francis A. Bartlett’s home and property. Since then, it was known as Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens.

“We have evolved from a private research estate into a regional resource that blends conservation, education, and public engagement,” Reitz said.

In the early 1900s, Bartlett was a prominent dendrologist and pioneer in the field of arboriculture who studied the natural history of trees and shrubs.

In 1907 he founded the internationally known F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Co. Bartlett purchased 30 acres of North Stamford woodlands where he resided, and in 1927 established the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories, one of two in the U.S., a training school and research laboratory for his company.

He populated his property with a wide spectrum of woody plant specimens from North America, Europe, Asia, and more. Upon Bartlett’s move to North Carolina, the state purchased his property under the Federal Open Spaces Program and was deemed the

Connecticut State Arboretum. Not long after, a local group of volunteers came together to preserve Bartlett’s property and formed what is now the Bartlett Arboretum Association.

Currently, the arboretum is in the midst of its 60th Anniversary Photo Exhibition. It’s open to professional and amateur photographers to capture images that reflect the beauty and character of the Arboretum. “The contest is still open, and the winning photograph has not yet been selected,” Reitz said. “Once chosen, the winning image will be highlighted in our communications and shared with our community.”

THE ARBORETUM’S FUTURE

The arboretum’s most significant upcoming project is the development of a new Horticulture Complex that will offer expanded classrooms, research spaces, energy-efficient greenhouse facilities, and a pavilion designed to support to expanded education and foster community engagement. “The structure will be built with low-carbon mass timber and will help us meet the growing demand for programming,” Reitz said.

The greenhouse will be a working space and hands-on classroom for students; the conservatory will offer visitors, researchers, and students an opportunity to experience the beauty of the natural world through a display of diverse plant collections year-round; and the pavilion will provide an December 29, 2025

outdoor classroom and event space, supporting summer camps, festivals, concerts, and workshop.

The project is projected to benefit 6,000 students annually, support food security efforts for vulnerable families, and produce trees and plants to beautify city parks and public spaces.

“In 2026 we will continue advancing this project, expanding our partnerships with local schools, and deepening our commitment to environmental stewardship,” Reitz added. “The next chapter of the Arboretum is centered on growth, innovation, and strengthening our role within the community.”

Over the year, like other green space, the Arboretum has experienced challenges related to funding, infrastructure, and weather impacts on its collections.

“We’ve addressed these through strong community partnerships, volunteer engagement, and strategic planning that emphasizes sustainability. Investments in facilities, programs, and long-term stewardship have strengthened our resilience and prepared us for future growth,” Reitz said.

“The Bartlett has endured and flourished because of steadfast community support, dedicated volunteers, knowledgeable staff, and a mission that has remained relevant across generations. People care deeply about preserving green space, fostering environmental education, and creating places where families and learners of all ages feel welcome.”
