WHAT’S IN A NAME?

I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THE TERM, “OVERTONE”.

It was during a chorus rehearsal. Al Fennell was directing at the time. There was a quartet up front teaching each section their part. At one point, the bass, baritone, and lead members of the quartet sang a chord.

Al smiled and pointed in the air.

“Do you hear that?”

Some guys nodded their heads acknowledging the sound; one or two jaws dropped as the guys struggled to identify the source of the sound.

“That is an overtone.”

The tenor note in the chord is created, as if by magic, by the combination of the other three parts, which, in theory, would make the tenor somewhat superfluous.

But, that’s a topic for another day.

It’s magic. There is certainly a scientific explanation for the phenomenon; but, let’s face it, it’s magic to most of us. All of which is my way of explaining why the name was chosen for our magazine. Our goal is to capture some of that magic that we discover every day in this exciting hobby and to share just a bit of it with you.

For this, our second issue, we focus our spotlight on one

aspect of that hobby.

Contest.

While many of our guys love to compete and, for them, competition is the most anticipated part of this journey we are on, some prefer to participate in one or more of the other activities that membership in the Chordsmen offers. Whether it’s bringing their best performance to the contest stage, taking part in our annual shows, or helping to make our community outreach programs the successes they have been, the basic reward is the same; the opportunity to share a love for a cappella singing with fellow artists and with an appreciative audience.

from an early age in sports teams, in the classroom, or on the playground. Corporations are well versed in competition and have entire departments dedicated to keeping an eye on the playing field.

Millions of dollars are spent every year creating entertainment for the general public—based on live competition. The word “competition” invokes so many varied emotions; anticipation, fear, motivation, excitement, and disappointment. For the Westchester Chordsmen, competition (or our competitive nature) is based on making ourselves better.

Making music is wonderful but making music at a high level is a gift that keeps on giving. And what better place to test your level than at a competition?

The Barbershop Harmony Society held its first vocal competition in 1938 and today this concept has grown internationally into weekend adventures that bring old and new friends together in the spirit of song—and competition! Why does the Barbershop Harmony contest keep growing and attracting more and more people? Possibly, for the same reasons the NFL has Monday nights locked up until the end of time—people know the players, have their favorites, support their friends, enjoy some great music and love the thrill of live competition.

The society has over 800 choruses that compete in the United States alone each season and the Chordsmen typically rank in the top 35. But rank is only

a small part of the fun. We are fortunate to have a creative team that puts together some of the funniest and most magical competition packages ever seen! The Chordsmen are often one of the few if not the only chorus in the competition to get a standing ovation. And that is the true goal of this performing organization.

While improving our rank will always be a part of human nature—our com-

petitive spirit—the members will also tell you there is no better feeling than having 6,000 people scream, yell, and stand in excitement over the performance you’ve just finished. It makes all the hours, the sweat and the effort completely worthwhile and excites us to do it all over again! Year after year. Competition is healthy; and a healthy organization knows how to find its place in the race!

I HAVE VERY SPECIAL MEMORIES DIRECTING THE GOLDEN CHORDSMEN FROM 1986 TO 1996. First, I need to thank

my supportive family who loved attending the competitions in Ocean City and Wildwood. Secondly, a huge thank you to my good friend Steve Delehanty (pictured at right) for composing entertaining comedy packages that scored high with the judges and audiences.

At my first contest as director, I lead 65 Chordsmen dressed as kids hoping to “stay young forever”. During the applause, the guys made a frantic 10 second costume change form kids to spectators at Yankee Stadium. I was the umpire. With the snap of a finger, nine Chordsmen in Yankee uniforms appeared. Chordsman, Irv Flamer borrowed the uniforms from George Steinbrenner! How cool was that! Some guys wanted to sleep in them. Watching the video, we had a great laugh watching the cameraman trying to locate the invisible ball pitched by Steve Delehanty (AKA #19, Dave Righetti).

The famous dummy package consisted of 100 ‘bodies’ hoping to ‘score big’.

My quartet buddies, Cliff Steinkamp and Ed Tyler designed a controllable dummy. The prototype was multiplied by Glen Allen and other handy Chordsmen and so we sang with 65 men and 35 dummies. You had to see the district manager’s face as he attempted to count the participants backstage. An international director complained to me that dummies beat his chorus. Our next creation had us acting like an elusive and beguil-

ing breed of Leprechauns! And then they asked, “What next?”

“Al you’re gonna’ be Big Bird!”

So the ‘Swan Song’ was born (or hatched). Yes, we actually did lay a huge egg, hatching William Micik (son of James). The audience went bonkers at the punch lines; one in particular contributed

Contest is a time to convene with old friends, entertain the audience and have fun singing well. What a great hobby!

are also conventions in the various districts throughout the United States and Canada, as well as Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. During these conventions, both quartets and choruses have friendly competitions which ultimately lead to one quartet and one chorus being crowned Champion at the International Convention in July of each year.

The Westchester Chordsmen enter these competitions each year. I know you are asking, “How many times have we won the International Championship”?

Well, the answer is … not yet.

However, the enjoyment we derive from the process of putting together a competition presentation as well as the fun of being with other singers at the conventions make it a special activity not to be missed. Some of the fondest memories many of the long time members have are of the competitions at the conventions. One stands out, not only within our own chapter, but also in other barbershopers who saw our performance.

In 1987, we had about 50 singers who were to compete with choruses that numbered over 100 singers. How could we match them? Well, we did. We built about 35 additional dummies, in full uniform to join us on stage. Some were at-

We also had one helium filled balloon man who rose above the chorus as we sang, “Wait ‘til you get ‘em up in the air boys” and another balloon man whose head exploded when we sang: Standing tall and feeling might fine We were losers until when We became 100 men (POP)… oops … ninety-nine!”

There were other years when we appeared as birds in a flock, leprechauns and Yankees baseball players. The objective was and remains to sing well, have fun and entertain. We have done that in the past and will continue to do that in the future.

only one part of a vast range of performance styles that have come to be associated with the Chordsmen. Nowhere is this more clearly demonstrated than in the chorus’s rendition of “The Prayer of the Children” or in Kurt Weill’s haunting ballad, “Lost in the Stars.” Equally at home singing the nonsense verses of “Ob-la dee, Ob-la-da” and the profound strains of “Imagine,” the Westchester

Chordsmen quest is always the same. To entertain. To move. To make the audience laugh and cry, escape and engage.

One of our chapter quartets, 29 Seconds never fails to delight us on all those counts. They are perennial competitors who always entertain as they garner those high scores. They made the semifinals in the district competition in October; and it should be noted that the district is arguably the most competitive in the country.

Over the years, many quartets have represented Westchester County but I think it may be fair to say that Our Favorite Pastime holds the record when it comes to the number of contest performances. The quartet has also appeared on more Chordsmen shows than any other. Thanks guys!

So, our contest ‘packages’ have not always relied on our comedic talents.

Bartell’s story brought back another memory related to Strike Up The Band.

The choreographer for that first version was Christine Oberc, an extremely talented lady who worked wonders with our guys. The former Rockette even got ours guys tapping! We reimagined the number years later and this time we put the FROGS in the back row and shifted the rest of the chorus down a row. As they sang, “Let the Drums Roll Out”, the chorus split in half and the FROGS marched down the center of the risers, two by two, straight to the front of the stage while the chorus shifted back to their normal position. The crowd loved it and we received a standing ovation.

We had performed it the week before the contest and got a similar response. What made that one particularly special was that it was our opening number and it was in Carnegie Hall.

You’re young, you’re scrappy. You want to be the best. You started singing in school, like everyone — choir, maybe a couple musicals. Karaoke with some friends, talent shows. Then some collegiate a cappella.

But you don’t want to just be fine.

That’s not enough. You want to be great.

shop blend. They don’t just match their vowels, they align their diphthongs as they sweep from one vowel to the next.

Four guys (meaning men or women) sounding like one guy. Why does blend matter? Because each vowel has a very specific “fingerprint” — frequencies in the harmonic series — and when the vowels are perfectly aligned, it helps lock down...

TUNING: You think four voices can only create four notes? Guess again. When you lock your voices into perfect tune

with the same vowels you can not only create additional notes above yours, you can even create the perception of a bass note below the human vocal range.

That’s right, that’s the vocal equivalent of some kind of dark arts ninja magic. But it works and it happens every day, along with...

JOE HUNTER RECENTLY RETIRED AFTER 11 PLUS YEARS AS MUSICAL DIRECTOR OF THE BIG APPLE CHORUS IN MANHATTAN. JOE IS A PRESENTATION JUDGE, A NATIONALLY CERTIFIED CHORUS DIRECTOR TRAINER, AND A MUCH SOUGHT-AFTER CHORUS AND QUARTET COACH. HE IS THE FORMER LEAD OF INTERNATIONAL FINALIST QUARTET, FOUR UNDER PAR, AS WELL AS FORMER BARITONE OF VARIETY PAK AND REVEILLE, 2002 MID-ATLANTIC DISTRICT CHAMPIONS. So, we Barbershoppers going into competition all ask the same question – “what are the judges looking for? What do they want?” C’mon – don’t lie – you know you have all thought that!

What we have found in our judging system and specifically in the Presentation Category, as soon as you ask that question you can get yourself into trouble. Because you are now conforming and norming your performance to some perception of what is “good”, or what is accepted in Barbershop.

In extreme cases, this leads to mannered and inwardly directed performances – remember the “Barbershop Squat”? How about the quartet that finishes its last chord and immediately charges the front of the stage for an overly ostentations bow? Closer to home for the Chordsmen – think about all the mannered and stilted things you so masterfully spoofed in your 75 Trombones parody. OR how about when choruses reset their stance very obviously after every breath, and artificially inject body

movement for movement’s sake because someone told them this was good? And in fact this is a good technique when used to make moribund groups that are performing “embalmed in the dead position” move at least a little and inject some energy in their performance. But when taken to extremes it gets odd and a littler bizarre; particularly if you were a lay person coming in off the street to watch one of these performances.

In the Presentation Category, we have come to call this spurious body motion “waving wheat” – even many of our best groups do it! As an experiment sometime, go find a top chorus YouTube ballad performance and turn off the sound and just watch. Do you notice how over the top the body motion is? Does the whole thing feel forced and or stilted?

Do you find yourself getting a little seasick watching?

We have coined the term, “Art of Performance”, and it is precisely in this “art” that we are dealing with these odd, mannered or disingenuous techniques. Think about when you watched a great performer onstage – a Johnny Mathis or Frank Sinatra – do you see that level of over the top gestures/ technique? Even when you watch a pop TV show like the Sing Off – do you see that level of regimented/odd movement from the performers? Or are the best ones the most natural and able to connect with you? Groups where their personality shines through?

So that’s the direction we are looking to take our Art form – we can learn much from other musical styles – why reinvent the wheel? In fact, by adopting these universal techniques we also stand a better chance at being perceived as relevant and less stylishly provincial.

When you are performing – ask yourself – how do I want the audience to FEEL about this song? What am I communicating? Not – “is this what the judges want”?

It’s all about the Entertainment Value of the Performance – why sell tickets otherwise? Look to touch people – to make their lives better or change them in some way – even if it means just making them laugh and forget their troubles for a few minutes. THAT is the power of Performance, and the Art of Performance is to make all our shows and appearances as powerful, impactful, and entertaining as possible, without having the audience scratch their heads and ask, “Why did they do that”?

OK – so enough preaching – now I’m going to share a little secret with you all. The Society Contest and Judging staff are so supportive of this direction towards real and genuine performances that they have supported a new direction and re-branding of the Presentation Category. Look for more on this in the coming months! We have re-written our Category Description to reflect the values laid out above, and we will likely be renaming the Presentation Category as the Performance Category. Exciting times!

GEORGE G. GIPP, MPH, IS A CERTIFIED PRESENTATION JUDGE. HE IS ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER PRESENTATION COACHES IN THE SOCIETY. GEORGE IS A MEMBER OF THE BROTHERS IN HARMONY, A WORLD CLASS A CAPPELLA CHORUS OF OVER 100 BASED IN HAMILTON SQUARE, NEW JERSEY. THEY PLACED SIXTH IN THE WORLD IN THE 2013 INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION. HERE, GEORGE OFFERS SOME POINTERS ON PERFORMANCE FOCUS. PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION A very common problem for quartets in the High C to Mid B Level, is the challenge of looking and feeling “uncomfortable” while performing. This can occur individually and/or collectively, preventing performers from creating the image of the song. The result will diminish the emotional impact upon the audience.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION The problem is inconsistency with respect to Vocal and Visual Agreement.

Essentially, the “Visuals” do not match the “Vocals.”

Inconsistency is caused when the performer sends the audience mixed messages by confusing the “PERFORMANCE FOCUS.” As performers, we have the honor and responsibility to deliver the musical “gift” using one of the primary vocal/ musical characteristics via a presentation focus choice.

PRIMARY PRESENTATION FOCUS CHOICES 1. Rhythm 2. Melody 3. Lyric 4. Harmonic As an example, when we incorrectly apply lyrical gestures to a rhythm focused song we feel uncomfortable with our delivery and tend to confuse our audience.

This is a Lose/Lose!

HIGH IMPACT TECHNIQUE THAT CAN CAUSE IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENT – THE “QUICK FIX” As the coach, ask your quartet to individually identify the “FOCUS” of the song’s Vocal/Musical Characteristic(s).

Yes, there can be multiple focuses in a piece. For example, a verse sung freely, can be lyrically focused, immediately followed by a rhythmic one. If the distinction is not clear, challenges occur.

Once there is consensus, make sure you, “Cover the B.E.A.N.” Ensure all performance choices are visually and vocally: B = Believable E = Effective A = Appropriate & Authentic N = Natural Performance choices should be creditable and plausible (Believable) and successful in producing the desired or intended result (Effective). We strive to blend suitable and proper (Appropriate) with genuine and true choices in the given circumstance (Authentic). We always filter through an innate sense of giving in the performers’ purest character (Natural).

Working “two on two” (two sitting out with the coach and two performing) request brutal honesty with each other as to how well they are covering the components of the B.E.A.N. Ask the performers to evaluate their “Body Compliment” to the music.

HONESTLY ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS 5. Do your gestures complement the song’s performance focus?

6. Are your choices working well together as a unit?

7. Are your choices working against each other?

8. Do you have “The Look of the Music” and “The Look of the Sound?

9. To what degree do you feel your choices are “Stage Worthy?”

Once these concepts are internalized and mastered, we can move from Competent/Effective delivery into Engaging and Enthralling performances (next lesson).

IN THE FALL OF 2014 THE WESTCHESTER CHORDSMEN partnered with the Master School in Dobbs Ferry to produce the first WESCO A Cappella Festival. The festival was held on a Sunday afternoon and was open to the public. There was no charge for admission.

The second festival took place on Sunday, November 15, 2015. Our co-sponsor

this time around was Mamaroneck High School. Roughly 120 students from Scarsdale, Rye Neck, Peekskill, Pleasantville and Mamaroneck performed before an enthusiastic audience.

The festivals were established to celebrate the joy of a cappella singing and to spotlight high school groups that engage in this exciting and creative hobby. Par-

ticipants are encouraged to cheer each other on in a spirit of fellowship.

The festival is open to all a cappella groups, (male, female or mixed voices) and there are no limitations on style. The only requirement is that the singing be a cappella. For more information about this year’s festival, visit our website at chordsmen.org.

2015 WALTER PEEK SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO SAM DENLER

THE WALTER A. PEEK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was named for a Chordsman who spent much of his time giving back to the community. Walter loved to sing, and was responsible for putting together our annual nursing home runs during the holidays. The award provides a check in the amount of $1,000 to a recipient who shares that love for singing, has shown a talent for vocal performance and hopes to pursue that interest.

Samuel Denler, the 2015 recipient accepted his award at a recent Chordsmen show, Swinging with the Rat Pack. At the time we mentioned just a few of the credits and honors which made Sam a perfect candidate for the award.

He had been the student conductor and arranger for the Somers High School Chamber Choir (we were treated to one of his arrangements later in our program). He had sung with the Westminster Choir College Vocal Institute Chamber Chorus; the National Association of Music Educators National Honor Choir in Nashville, Tennessee; the New York All State Mixed chorus; the Area All State Chorus; and the All County Chorus.

He is the recipient of Westminster’s Talent/Merit Scholarship award; the National Honor Society, Somers High School; and judging by the list or musical theater roles he’s played over the years, he’s the guy every casting director hopes will come through the door.

In the fall of 2015, following his graduation from Somers High School Sam began attending Westminster Choir College majoring in music education with a concentration in voice.

We heard that among his many talents, Sam could do an impressive Hugh Jackman Les Miserables impression. We asked for a sample and he obliged to the delight and cheers of the crowd. It was spot on.

I asked Sam if he’d like to comment here and his response is below.

RECENTLY, AT A FRESHMEN AGAIN REHEARSAL, it was suggested that we go to dinner to celebrate the holidays and thank our wives for letting us out so much. The evening started out quite typically with great food, fine wine, and good conversation. Being true Barbershoppers, after filling our bellies we felt compelled to sing. I was dispatched to scout out the bar crowd.

Talk about your rough crowds! Not one of them had a neck!

Tattoos and pony-tails adorned their hulking bodies. I swear, in all my days I have never seen a more fearsome looking group!

I reported back to Andy. He told the women to warm up the cars and leave the engines running. Stash clutched the boombox as if it were a sub-machine gun. When we arrived in the bar, I overheard one of them say, “These guys better be good!”

Sunday night football was blasting but none of us had the nerve to tell them to shut off the set. Our first song, “Route 66” was geared toward the crowd and they started to settle down.

By the time we sang our second song they were attentive, and applauding heartily.

As we turned to make our exit and leave on a happy note, they heartily shook our hands and wished us a Happy Holiday.

We got out of there with body parts still intact. Now that was, as they say, a tough crowd!

to share their most memorable moment during his or her five years of grammar school. Emily quickly raised her hand and was handed the microphone.

“It was when my Pop Pop sang to me on Valentine’s Day with his barbershop quartet.”

To say I was blown-away would be a gross understatement.

Any attempt for me to hold on to my composure was useless.

Of all her experiences in five years of grammar school this is what she valued most.

What could be better than that for an emotional grandfather? We probably underestimate the joy and memories we produce during our Valentine’s Day quartet sing outs.

She was totally overwhelmed and pleased to be the center of attention for her class.

Last week, Emily had her fourth grade graduation from grammar school onto middle school. During the graduation exercise the South School principal asked if anyone wanted
