all her a tree hugger or environmentalist, but one thing is certain: Daphne Dixon, co-founder of the nonprofit Live Green Connecticut and founder of the marketing business Conscious Decisions — both based in Fairfield — is a leader in the green business education and networking movement across the state. Rallying the support of municipal governments, community members and green business owners, she calls this trifecta the “magic mix.” Through networking, organizing conferences, educating and now building a website to showcase local sustainability projects throughout various towns in Connecticut, Dixon is creating a virtual space for community members, local government leaders and business owners to come together and share green ideas. The website livegreenct.org will go live during a press conference Jan. 7 at the Fairfield University Accelerator and Mentoring Enterprise. “We’ll be showcasing multimillion-dollar projects in seven towns and cities starting in Fairfield County,” Dixon said. “Then we’ll broaden the scope to include a Web page for every town in Connecticut. The point is to let people in the communities know about these case studies and learn from each other and start saving money and making towns greener.” The Jan. 7 press conference at 1499 Post Road will start at 2 p.m. Several dignitaries had confirmed attendance at press time, including Ridgefield First Selectman Rudy Marconi, Wilton First Selectman Bill Brennan and John » GREEN, page 1

Norwalk toy maker hopes to capture the tween market BY ALEXANDER SOULE Hearst Connecticut Media

O

ver the years at innovativeKids in Norwalk, Shari Kaufman and Michael Levins nurtured a talent for predicting the toys and books children would want to open during the following year’s holiday season. With a new company in Sugar Lulu, Kaufman is about to find out if her crystal ball can roll with the fickle tastes of tween girls. Kaufman created Sugar Lulu after the couple’s tween daughter said there was little to interest her on the shelves of stores, with a gap between the girlhoodgeared lines of Disney and the edgier fare from Forever 21 and other mall stores with apparel and accessories galore. The answer was obvious – let her daughter brainstorm a product wish list, appeal to other tweens and put Kaufman’s career in children’s branding to use at a new company. Tweens are generally considered to be children between 10 and 12 years old. From the moment of inspiration, it took just a year to develop Sugar Lulu’s product lineup, released last February at Toy Fair 2014 in New York City. Under the logo of

a French bulldog sporting wings, a tiara and studded collar, Sugar Lulu initially released do-it-yourself jewelry design kits, pinup sets to decorate rooms, art and writing portfolios, and games packaged in tins resembling handbags. With at least a few parents confessing to having little inkling of the latest wish list from their tween kid, it would seem a tall task to predict their tastes a month out, let alone a year. Figuring out the must-have items for the tween girls of 2016 will take place over the next eight weeks, with big retailers demanding concepts from suppliers like Sugar Lulu a year in advance so that their catalogs can be planned.

SOCIAL MEDIA TOOLBOX

Sugar Lulu’s success will be based on how well Kaufman leverages a market research tool she relied on little throughout her days with innovativeKids — social media. Sugar Lulu promises to let girls develop, test and vote on new products, promising the process will produce surprising new accessories that appeal to a broad audience. “I like the idea,” said Levins, chairman of the American Toy Specialty Retailers Association. “Girls this age, they love it and

then they hate it, so how do you stay on top of the trends? How do you figure out what they are looking for?” Sugar Lulu hit the mark in its first go-around, landing “flagship” accounts — those in which its entire product line was picked up — with Nordstrom, Learning Express and other major retailers. Kaufman estimates Sugar Lulu secured between 30 percent and 40 percent of its placement with flagship accounts in its first year in business. Now it is on to year two, and a new catalog featuring, among other items, collage photo frames, school supplies and beads that can be strung together to form inspirational messages. As girls advance into their teens — a group her daughter passed into recently — Kaufman is setting up mentor programs so that Sugar Lulu “veterans” can stay involved in the business, creating a Junior Achievement-like feel to the company. If Sugar Lulu hopes to inspire and empower girls this holiday season, the end of the calendar year adds up to ample perspiration for children’s product designers. As Kaufman works with Sugar Lulu’s tween advisers over the next few months, innovativeKids’ Levins will hopscotch to gift product fairs across the country, a grueling travel schedule culminating in February at Toy Fair 2015 at Manhattan’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, convened by the Toy Industry Association trade group. Kaufman is confident she has processes in place to manage the feedback from the ever-expanding army of tween girl advisers Sugar Lulu has drawn, and in her own abilities to fit their ideas into an appealing brand. And she has gotten advice in building the business from the Women’s Business Development Council in Stamford, among others. “We’re not inundated yet,” Kaufman said. “I have to keep mining ways to keep the girls interested and involved.” Kaufman gave few hints about what will be in store for Sugar Lulu going for-

ward. But conspicuously absent from the product portfolio is a staple of youth culture today — digital offerings via mobile apps or other channels. In the do-it-yourself genre where Sugar Lulu plays, a Massachusetts company called Fashion Playtes raised $12.5 million in funding between 2009 and 2012 to produce an app allowing girls to design their own clothes. That venture shut down this past May, and its founder is now attempting an app to let girls design their own jewelry, reportedly at price points between $50 and $500, far higher than Sugar Lulu’s own line. Kaufman expects Sugar Lulu to expand into the digital world in the coming year without providing specifics, except to hint some type of wearable technology could be in store for the brand. “This is by girls, for girls,” Kaufman said. “You dream it, you make it.” Hearst Connecticut Media includes four daily newspapers: Connecticut Post, Greenwich Time, The Advocate (Stamford) and The News Times (Danbury). CBRE acquires national construction consulting firm BY JOHN GOLDEN jgolden@westfairinc.com

T

he head of IVI International Inc., a family-owned construction consulting business headquartered on the Platinum Mile in Harrison, N.Y., said he expects the company to double the size of its operations in the next five years after its recent acquisition by CBRE Group Inc. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed by the two companies when announcing the deal Dec. 8. CBRE also acquired IVI International’s related companies. Founded in 1973 as Inspection & Valuation International by Tancredi M. de Stefanis, a commercial construction contractor in Westchester, IVI has grown to include 200 employees nationwide under the direction of the founder’s sons, Carl, Mario and Mark de Stefanis. The company, which provides construction risk management, construction cost recovery, due diligence, environmental, property condition and other consulting services for the industry’s lending institutions and equity investors, has outgrown its headquarters space on West Red Oak Lane in Harrison. The firm has provided services to lenders and investors on more than $50

billion of real estate projects across the U.S., according to CBRE. Mark de Stefanis, director of business operations, said IVI will keep its name under CBRE’s ownership “because of the goodwill attached to that name. … We want to leverage that as long as we can.” No office consolidations or staff reductions are planned at this time, de Stefanis said. IVI has regional offices in Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles and Bethesda, Md. With business growing at an expected 20 percent to 30 percent this year and the company now providing construction risk management advice on about 400 projects nationwide, “Certainly we need all hands on deck,” said de Stefanis. “We’re extremely busy.” “IVI and all its folks are coming over”

to CBRE with the acquisition, said CBRE spokesman Robert McGrath, confirming that no layoffs are planned. Mark de Stefanis, who has served as president of a related IVI business, Construction Cost Recovery Inc., said the acquired company has a vast and valuable construction cost database that can be more fully leveraged through CBRE for use by real estate owners and other clients. “It allows us to open up another line of business,” he said. As a national leader in construction risk management, IVI also brings to CBRE an added service for clients that has been “relatively untapped by CBRE,” he said. CBRE officials in the announcement said IVI will complement and enhance the expertise of CBRE’s existing Valuation and Advisory Services team, including assessment and consulting professionals, in the Americas. CBRE’s advisory services division employs more than 1,700 professionals worldwide in more than 300 major metropolitan areas, the company said. “IVI has a 40-plus-year record of providing insight and analysis that helps investors, lenders and occupiers manage risk,” said Thomas B. McDonnell, president of CBRE’s Americas Valuation & Advisory Service. “Adding IVI’s accomplished team to our

existing capabilities provides a highly sought after service that we can now offer our investor, developer and lender clients throughout the country.” Mark de Stefanis will serve as senior managing director in charge of IVI’s entire operation with CBRE, he said. His brother Carl, who served as CEO of the family’s second-generation business, will provide consulting services as needed along with brother Mario. “Joining CBRE is a big win for both our clients and employees,” de Stefanis said. “CBRE affords us a significantly broader platform — both geographically and across an array of services — to serve our clients, and our people will have enhanced career development opportunities as we integrate with CBRE’s professionals across the country and around the world.” Selling the IVI business was “tough” for its family owners, said de Stefanis. “This was Carl’s baby. I helped work in it with him and Mario and grew it to where it is today. I needed some convincing” to proceed with the sale. Working 11 months on the deal with CBRE professionals, he developed trust in IVI’s new partners and owner, he said. “I certainly see in the next five years we can double the size of our operation with the CBRE platform,” de Stefanis said.

Swiss tech firm Comet lands in Shelton

C

hoyce Peterson Inc. in Norwalk, a commercial real estate brokerage and consulting firm that specializes in tenant representation, announced it has completed lease negotiations for Comet Technologies USA Inc. at 100 Trap Falls Road Extension in Shelton. Choyce Peterson principals John Hannigan and Alan Peterson represented Comet Technologies, which had been at 76 Progress Drive in Stamford. Comet Technologies is the U.S. subsidiary of the Switzerland-based Comet Group, a global provider of systems, components and services in X-ray, radio-frequency and other technologies.

Choyce Peterson had handled several previous renewals for Comet at its Stamford location. The new, 16,500-square-foot facility — Class A flex space — is part office, part light assembly/warehouse and applications laboratory. “We led Comet on an extensive search for a building that could accommodate Class A office space contiguous to a high-ceilinged light assembly area with a loading dock,” Hannigan said in a press release. “We toured buildings throughout Stamford, Norwalk, Shelton, Stratford, Trumbull, Newtown, Bethel, Wilton, Orange, Milford and Monroe.” Jeremy Simon, general manager for the Americas at Comet, in the press release said,

“We were one of the first tenants to tour this building with the new prospective owner, who was very willing to work with us on redesigning a new exterior glass corner entry and lobby.” Simon called the site “perfect for our needs,” adding, “Not only did Choyce Peterson do an excellent job in the search for new space and negotiating the terms of our new lease, but they managed the various players on the team very professionally and coordinated the numerous steps involved in this complicated move flawlessly.” Choyce Peterson was founded in 1997 and has offices in Norwalk and Rye Brook, N.Y. — Bill Fallon

Will better job numbers crimp credit flow? CBIA ECONOMIST TO PLUMB NEXT REPORTS FOR HINTS

T

he surge in U.S. employment could spur the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates earlier than anticipated, an economist with the 10,000-member Connecticut Business & Industry Association said recently. According to the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, 321,000 jobs were added across the U.S. in November. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.8 percent, but that’s good news, said Peter Gioia, economist for the CBIA. “We saw 119,000 people join the labor force last month and that’s important because it means some previously discour-

T

aged workers have started to look for jobs again,” Gioia said. It is not only the job numbers that are important for businesses, he said. Gioia said most analysts expect that the Federal Reserve will not raise interest rates until at least September 2015. “However, if we see two or three more jobs reports like this, businesses should be alert for an earlier federal action,” he said. Last month, Connecticut reported a gain of 3,600 jobs in October. The unemployment rate remained unchanged from the previous month at 6.4 percent. Connecticut has only recovered 74 per-

cent of the jobs lost during the recession, while the nation as a whole has regained all jobs lost, the CBIA reported. The CBIA noted that next month Connecticut legislators will be back in session “to tackle a budget deficit for the current fiscal year and projected shortfalls for the next budget cycle.” Gioia said that if lawmakers make decisions that support economic competitiveness and business growth, Connecticut will be able to take full advantage of the national economic recovery and put more people back to work. — Bill Fallon

essentially, all things flat screen and Brooklyn these days. The appeal has crossed generations as the event demonstrated, with youthful hipsters in designer glasses and businesspeople in skirts and pants suits or ties and jackets reconnecting with what might be termed high-energy bowling. Among changes to traditional bowling, the lanes are tinted blue and the black-lighted pins would make contextual additions to a “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” video. Yet for all their neon visibility, the pins are no easier to knock over than conventional ones – the lane, pin and ball dimensions remain official and the 7-10 split remains a heartbreaker. Spares and strikes are registered on overhead flat screens. Historically forgettable bowling alley fare has been replaced with a full-service kitchen serving proprietary items such as the 5-pound and made-to-share Behemoth Burger, The Ultimate Grilled Cheese, the Dolce Pollo Barbeque Flatbread and the Monster Cookie Melt. The menu was crafted by Bowlmor AMF Executive Chef Edward Porter, recent winner of the cable TV Food Network’s “Guy’s Grocery Games” cooking competition.

so the holiday season is the perfect time for Bowlmor to open its doors in the Connecticut area.” The 38-lane facility, one of 340 Bowlmors nationally plus eight in Mexico, is available for corporate events. Bowlmor AMF was created in 2013 via

the merger of Bowlmor, a bowling and entertainment company with roots in Greenwich Village, and AMF Bowling Worldwide. The original Bowlmor closed in July after 76 years on University Place following a lease dispute. Bowlmor AMF acquired Brunswick’s bowling center business in 2014. The company’s brands now include AMF, Bowlmor Lanes, Bowlero, Brunswick Bowling, Brunswick Zone and Brunswick Zone XL. The facility features oversized video screens at the end of each lane, high-definition flat-screen TVs throughout and a fully equipped DJ booth. The facility also hosts a laser tag arena and gaming center. Bowlmor refers to the lanes as “Connecticut’s first boutique bowling alley.” The event attracted Bowlmor employees from around U.S., including company server-trainers Elissa Ramirez, who works in Bowlmor’s Times Square facility, and Chris Sanders, who had traveled from the company’s Houston facility to participate.

AmeriCares ships relief to the Philippines

Stamford-based AmeriCares emergency response team recently arrived in the Philippines to assist those displaced by Typhoon Hagupit. The team joined an AmeriCaressupported response team in-country to assist with coordinating aid deliveries and assessing survivors’ needs. Hagupit, known locally as Ruby, made landfall Dec. 6 in the central and eastern Philippines with rains and hurricaneforce winds, causing flooding and power outages. Up to 1 million Filipinos evacuated their

homes in advance of the storm. It has been a year since Typhoon Haiyan raked the Philippines. AmeriCares reacted to that storm with more than $21 million in relief aid. The AmeriCares response team in Manila was set to distribute hygiene supplies to shelters. Shipments of medicines, bandages, baby care products and other relief supplies were planned. AmeriCares also awarded emergency funding to a partner organization in the Philippines in advance of the storm to

purchase food and relief supplies for displaced families. “Roads are flooded, power lines are down and roofs are blown off homes,” said Paul Pagaran, AmeriCares’ response and recovery coordinator for the Philippines. “We won’t know the full extent of the damage for days, but with thousands of families in crowded evacuation centers we anticipate our help will be needed.” AmeriCares has been responding to emergencies in the Philippines since

1985, most recently working alongside the Philippines Department of Health and local partners to repair health centers damaged or destroyed by Haiyan. AmeriCares has been aiding survivors of natural disasters, disease outbreaks, political conflict and extreme poverty around the world for more than 30 years. H

olly Alexander, a Greenwich native, is at home in the world of nonprofits. That is quite clear on a recent morning as she checks in with her longtime client Adopt-A-Dog at its Armonk, N.Y., sanctuary. Alexander has been working with the rescue agency for years through TopSpin Communications, her social-media marketing company. On this day, she is juggling not only an adorable puppy but an update from the organization’s director, Allyson Halm. Its mega fundraiser, “Puttin’ on the Dog” was at this time just weeks away. Though it is already a well-established event nearing its 30th anniversary, its importance cannot be taken for granted. And that’s why Halm was happy to hear about SavAdate, Alexander’s newly launched Westchester-based venture. SavAdate is an online event-planning hub designed to help nonprofits select optimum dates for their events and also access highend service providers. Halm says there was definitely a need and so was more than interested when Alexander explained SavAdate to her. “We were very excited because the com-

petition for the right date is just that — a competition,” Halm says. The venture, Halm adds, is simply another way Alexander is drawing on her natural talents. “She’s a computer, this woman,” Halm says. “The brain is like a computer.”

Indeed, Alexander saw a problem and came up with a solution. “The goal of SavAdate is to draw attention to the nonprofits,” Alexander says. “It’s such amazing work.” And, she notes, “They’re all competing for everything, the same day, the same dollar.” Events, from Friday night, black-tie galas to Saturday morning walk-a-thons to weekday golf tournaments, need to be carefully planned. “One of the biggest problems has always been event conflicts, two or three events happening on the same day,” Alexander says. “When you’re planning an event, you need to know – and the picture was never clear.” By starting this informational hub, Alexander says the “hope is that people will put their event in” as soon as they decide on a date. From there, others can use the information to plan their own events accordingly and increase both exposure and, ideally, attendance. “It’s free to search and it’s free to list an event,” Alexander says, adding that vendors pay to advertise their services. As founder of SavAdate, Alexander sees unlimited potential. While the initial rollout is in this area, SavAdate is a “national platform,” already gaining traction. Alexander has some 50 charities signed up, from local organizations to those based

in California and Florida. “They’ve jumped on, regardless,” she says, of where they are based. When organizations hear of the concept, Alexander says the reaction has been universal: “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.” For Alexander, it’s simply the latest step in a career based on maximizing potential. Alexander, who grew up in Greenwich and now lives in Goldens Bridge, graduated with a degree in psychology from Tufts University. She went on to spend some dozen years in the luxury retail industry, working at Mary Jane Denzer, her mother’s eponymous — and legendary — business in White Plains. Alexander was involved in “every end” of the designer fashion boutique, “which was great training for any business,” she says. She would then go on to start her own company, TopSpin Communications. Helping small businesses, nonprofits and individuals maximize their social-media presence has what Alexander calls “a good synergy” with SavAdate. “My goal is to really help promote the organization,” Alexander says. And, she adds, the audience here is prime. “We’re living in a very philanthropic community.”

Kydes, chairman of Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling’s energy and environment task force. At the conference, Live Green Connecticut will announce the dates and locations of three strategy meetings and workshops in 2015 that will provide opportunities for green businesses and local governments to collaborate on sustainability ideas and present their projects to the public.

“At the end of the day what’s important to us is that people understand we all share natural resources and we’re all in this together.”

— Daphne Dixon

“We did two workshops last year at Yale and Fairfield universities,” Dixon said. “These conferences provided case studies to municipal leaders on projects that provide economic payback and environmental protection. In 2015, we’re inviting mayors, other municipal leaders, directors of finance, the

public works department, task force leaders and community leaders to join us for three conferences. One of them will be held in Fairfield County in the spring.” Each of the conferences brought more than 150 people. Collectively, 50 municipalities were represented at the two events in 2013. Through Live Green Connecticut and Conscious Decisions, Dixon has developed a network of more than 10,000 people who are connected to her sustainable vision through social media and email lists. She said all of them have expressed an interest in supporting the sustainability movement in Connecticut in various ways. One of her biggest business sponsors and clients in the sustainability movement is Xerox Corp. in Norwalk. “They are market innovators and they help their clients achieve all types of sustainability goals,” Dixon said. “They work with universities and municipalities. Most people consider Xerox to be a mainstream business and they’ve positioned themselves as a sustainability leader.” She added that Westchester, N.Y.-based Frito-Lay — part of the Pepsi corporate family — is also a leader in sustainability through its use of electrical vehicles. “Over the last eight years, I’ve done a couple hundred events,” Dixon said. “I’ve edu-

cated over 15,000 people. I’ve worked with over 300 businesses and organizations and through events, hundreds and thousands of dollars of sales have been generated.” Through events such as the Live Green Connecticut Food & Music Festival, which is held annually in September, Dixon has met green business owners, community members and families and provided opportunities for companies to share their sustainability projects and best practices with the public. Attendance has risen year after year at the events, Dixon said. For three of the five years, the festival showcased Ford Motor

Co.’s electric vehicles for test drives. This past year a new company, Bloomfield Bikes, brought its electric bicycles. Next year’s fair is Sept. 19-20 at Taylor Farm Park in Norwalk. “Our strength over the years is that we’ve just been open to all types of different partnerships and working with a lot of different organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity and Sustainable America,” Dixon said. “At the end of the day what’s important to us is that people understand we all share natural resources and we’re all in this together. We’re very accepting of businesses and people in all stages of their path to sustainability.”

SPECIAL REPORT

REAL ESTATE

Kent Hanley’s three Rs – Raveis, real estate and racing BY MARK LUNGARIELLO mlungariello@westfairinc.com

I

n Kent Hanley’s country-chic office, green toy soldiers dominate the landscape. They line up strategically on the window sills. They freeze mid-march on table tops. They stand, guns drawn, on top of desk drawers. They are no mere hobby. Each soldier represents someone he’s recruited for the team that is William Raveis Real Estate Mortgage Insurance in Shelton. Hanley has been with the Raveis family for 29½ years. Hired by William “Bill” Raveis himself, he now works closely with Raveis’ sons Ryan, who heads up the mortgage side of the business, and Chris, managing partner and executive vice president. What has drawn Hanley to the company and the Raveises are their family values, he says, and a competitive edge that makes those who run the company restless about staying still. “If you don’t like change, this is not the organization for you,” says Hanley, the general manager and executive vice president of sales in Connecticut. “Don’t ask us to sit here and maintain something. We’d all be bored.” It’s clear you can take the boy out of Indianapolis, but you can’t take Indianapolis — or at least the Indianapolis 500 — out of the boy. Hanley has adopted the Constitution State as his home, but he still has a Midwesterner’s love of car racing. When he isn’t overseeing the Raveis firm’s Connecticut sales operation, he’s in the garage of his rural Newtown home, working on drag-race cars. “My wife knows where to find me.” Hanley’s wife, Becky, manages Raveis’ Greenwich office. They met at work, brought together by a 40-year-old company that started in Greenwich but has expanded into the ninth largest of its kind in the U.S., with 100 offices and 2,000 agents in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange counties, Manhattan, Long Island and Massachusetts, among other Northeast locales. It’s a lot of territory to cover but not for those whose motors run fast. By the time Hanley was 8, his parents were throwing him Indianapolis 500-themed parties. He was racing and working on go-karts by middle school and spent his high school days working at a gas station and learning to race cars. Today, he’s a member of a competitive league for drag racing, the form of racing where the cars are super fast and the tracks super short. He prefers drag racing, he says jokingly, because he never learned how to turn well. His wife knows that racing gets in your blood and so she doesn’t give him much grief for spending his free time leaning over the engine of cars and tinkering with the mechanics. That he participates in drag races allows her to minimize the amount of time she has to worry about his safety. “I can hold my breath for seven seconds,” she tells him. The couple has four children from previous relationships, now scattered across the country. Hanley says he learned the strategy of keeping a family together from his grandparents: He bought a home on Florida’s Gulf Coast in the hope of enticing the younger set to visit when they are on

“They are no mere hobby. Each soldier represents someone he’s recruited for the team that is William Raveis Real Estate, Mortgage and Insurance in Shelton.”

vacation or in-between college semesters. That liveliness kept Hanley moving east after he graduated from the Kelley School of Business in Bloomington, Ind. He met William Raveis through the one friend he had locally who was into the drag racing scene. (He’s since learned that there are plenty of racers in the Northeast if you know where to look for them.) In his early days at Raveis, Hanley worked on the mortgage end in the lending division, went to the real estate side and then created a repairs and improvement company and a property management one as well. As he took on new roles at Raveis, he thrived amid the ’80s recession and adjusting to the East Coast. All the while, his admiration for his boss grew. “I think what is impressive about Bill is he’s a forwardthinking, visionary type individual.” When the company had a tough stretch during the market troubles of the 80s, they emerged more nimble and prepared to handle future dips. Raveis told Hanley and other executives, “We’re never going to be in that position again.”

When Raveis was in his 50s, he was making arrangements to ensure the next generation’s involvement and the company’s preparedness for future crises. Raveis now has six grandchildren all of a young age. “He’s already looking at which ones will be involved in the company,” Hanley says. What instills his loyalty and that of other long-term employees in the company is the understanding that the brokers and associates are its lifeblood, he says. Raveis has been named one of the best places to work for employees for several years since the designation was started. The company is able to hire people who have flexible, collegial personalities and share its innovative approach. That, Hanley says, is what makes the company successful and also a pleasure to work for. “We don’t have a lot of red tape. We aren’t very corporate,” he says, adding that they still have a country approach to certain aspects, like marketing in newspapers. Says the Indiana racer, “I mean we are just Connecticut Yankees.”

Wells Fargo survey finds waxing optimism, profits New leader at Avison Young “The survey is encouraging

T

he latest Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index score is at its highest level since the beginning of 2008 — having increased to positive 58 in November, up from positive 49 in July. There are 74 Wells Fargo stores and 100 ATMs throughout Connecticut, with 35 stores and 46 ATM locations in Fairfield County. The survey found 71 percent of respondents expect their overall financial situation to be very or somewhat good over the next 12 months, up from 66 percent in July 2014. “The survey is encouraging because it shows that small-business owners are the most optimistic they’ve been since 2008,” said Ron Coccaro, Wells Fargo business banking area manager for New York and Connecticut. “Whether it is hiring, capital spending, the operating environment, revenue growth or overall optimism in general, they are expecting 2015 to be a better year.” Regarding future expectations, the survey pegged its small-business optimism score as more than doubling in a year’s time. “The future expectations score is helping drive the rise in optimism,” Wells Fargo said in a press release accompanying the

The present situation – how business owners rate current conditions for their businesses – also continues to steadily climb, having increased to positive 21, up from positive 7 in fourth quarter of 2013.” On hiring, the survey found 26 percent of small-business owners say they plan to increase the number of jobs at their companies, up from 20 percent in July 2014 and up

from 16 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013. In the arena of capital spending, the survey data indicate 29 percent expect to increase the amount of money allocated for capital spending compared with 25 percent in July 2014. Fifty-one percent of small-business owners who responded expect their company’s revenues to increase in 2015, while 14 percent expect a decrease. The biggest challenge as cited by 14 percent of respondents was attracting customers and new business. Survey respondents also were asked about the cost of health insurance and health care, and the anticipated impact on their business. Eighty-eight percent of small-business owners have health insurance for themselves and their families and 83 percent say that this coverage meets their needs. For 2015, 25 percent of respondents plan to offer health insurance options for their employees, up from 19 percent in 2010. More than half — 56 percent — of survey respondents believe the cost for health care in 2015, including insurance and out-of-pocket medical costs, will cause “a great deal or some” financial hardship. — Bill Fallon

Greater Valley Chamber is geared for growth BY RONNI DIAMONDSTEIN

T

he Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce’s motto is “Advancing the Regional Agenda through Business Leadership,” and it could not have found a better leader and voice than its president, William E. “Bill” Purcell. With a strong background in urban studies and an MBA, Purcell has great enthusiasm and passion for chambers of commerce and how members come together voluntarily to share the best business practices and improve the quality of life. “I’m proud to put people to work and see myself as a social worker in disguise,” he said. Chambers of commerce have a long history dating from the first one established in Marseille, France, in 1599. “The chamber movement is as old as the country is young and represents the very

best of the voluntary business associations that have helped to shape the free enterprise system we enjoy today,” Purcell said. He came to the Greater Valley in Bill Purcell. 2000 after 18 years at Photo by Fred Ortoli the chamber of commerce in his hometown of Worcester, Mass. Marking its 50th anniversary, the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce represents the Naugatuck River Valley of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, Shelton and the surrounding area. It has 500 members who represent a cross section of the area’s businesses — manufacturing, retail, service and biotech. These range from home-based sole proprietors to large corporations with

multiple branches, including BIC, Thule USA, PerkinElmer, Sikorsky, the DiMatteo Group and David M. Grant Caterers. The valley, situated among three urban areas — Bridgeport, Waterbury and New Haven — has experienced considerable growth along Route 8. “Thanks to forward-thinking folks, the highway has become a leading economic center in the state with great office space and modern manufacturing,” Purcell said. “There’s lots of new construction, lots of office space and new construction of rental apartments, especially in the Canal Street (Shelton) revitalization. The valley has become a destination of choice for residents. People are discovering its beauty.” Purcell said he sees a parallel between the triangulation of the valley and the chamber’s three constituents. “Chamber professionals

occupy a unique space at the intersection of business, government and the general community. We are the voice of business at all levels and support our community,” he said. Networking is key. “While the adage for the real estate industry is ‘Location, location, location,’ effective chambers are expert at helping their members to make connections through a variety of networking events.” The chamber has a Health Care Council, Technology Council, Hotel Council and hosts two major business expos each year, including the Come Together for Business Expo, which was held recently in partnership with the Bridgeport, Stratford and Trumbull chambers of commerce. “Helping to make our member businesses stronger through educational seminars and the sharing of best practices is a core function of our chamber,” said Purcell about its professional development seminars. “Our Success in 60 seminar series, our OSHA training seminars and our Greater Valley human resources forums are just three examples where best practices are shared.” As a voice of business at local, state and federal levels of government, the chamber is active in legislative affairs. “This past year, the chamber hosted a manufacturing roundtable with our U.S. senator, a forum on trade with Canada with our congressman and a discussion with our state legislative leaders on issues impacting Connecticut’s competitive position in attracting and retaining business.” Above all, the chamber is an advocate for business and startups. “I am very proud of our Women In Networking Group (WIN) and our Young Emerging Professionals (YEP) for the impact they are making as philanthropists,” Purcell said. WIN established an entrepreneurial grant program for women-owned businesses in the region that has awarded more than $40,000 in $1,500 to $2,000 grants. YEP members are 20- to 30-year-olds who have also become philanthropists. For the past five years, YEP has hosted a fundraising event to support The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby. Purcell, a Woodbridge resident, serves on the steering committee of CT20x17, an initiative to make Connecticut one of top 20 states to do business in by 2017. “The goal is to increase desirability for businesses to come to Connecticut,” he said. “I’m proud to work with colleagues across the state in a nonpartisan way to move us forward as a state and as a nation. Elected officials may come and go, but the chamber will always be there.” The Greater Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce is at 10 Progress Drive in Shelton. Think West for the Holidays Arts and culture in northern Fairfield County are as robust and thriving as in any urban center. More than 450 creative resources, which includes 45 cultural organizations, 25 historical societies or museums, 10 libraries, 35 arts education programs, annual events, festival, fairs or projects are related to arts, culture and history. Additionally, more than 900 individuals are identified as creative resources. These include hundreds of artists and countless smaller commercial businesses engaging in creative efforts like graphic design, architecture and photography. Danbury ranks sixth in the country for its “artistic wealth,” according to Richard Florida (The Atlantic, 2011) and is the birth home of Charles Ives, one of America’s greatest composers. The famous Marian Anderson lived here for many years. Find out how Jim and his companions set about encouraging everyone to take better care of the sea so that all creatures — above and below — can live in harmony. The Greenwich Historical Society presents this family program Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Vanderbilt Education Center. There are two 30-minute marionette performances starting at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. A Q&A session follows where audience members have the opportunity to touch and ask questions about the marionettes. There will also be a craft program where children can create their own “underwater creatures.” No Strings Marionette Company is a two-puppeteer touring marionette theater, concentrating on original performance

pieces for family audiences. They perform primarily in New England, New York and New Jersey and teach their craft to a wide range of people through puppet-making workshops and residencies. For ticket information and directions, please visit greenwichhistory.org or call 203-869-6899

your little ones. This month, as part of the museum’s “Around the World” program visitors learn all about Sweden and are invited to listen to the Swedish Musical Sensation on Saturday, Dec. 13, with a performance by ABBA Girlz, the ultimate tribute band. Weather permitting enjoy the “Best Sock Skating in Connecticut” as children grin happily and glide on an “ice-like” surface in a special rink in the museum’s outdoor, completely enclosed Celebration Courtyard. And don’t miss the “Holiday Hand Bell Performance” on Dec. 20 by Shelton’s Trinity Lutheran Church Bell Choir. As moms and dads themselves, the staff of Stepping Stones Museum for Children understands the trauma a young child may feel about a photo with Santa. When Santa flies in from the North Pole, Dec 19-24, with Frosty the Snowman, reindeers and penguin, your child will be in a safe, familiar environment. And the photo you take (or staff can take for you on your device) will be a keepsake for years to come. Museum hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 pm. Before you visit, please check steppingstonesmuseum.org/calendar for the most upto-date information on times and activities.

BUSINESS CONNECTIONS ECONOMY

EVENTS

Now, the Real Work Begins By John Rathgeber

N

ext month, Connecticut’s newly elected legislators begin a critical General Assembly session, one that will have an impact on the economic future of our state. The session will be dominated by the state’s next two-year budget. This will be a difficult budget, made more challenging by the current deficit and the state’s long-term unfunded liabilities, issues that continue to hamper our economic growth. And legislators also may have the opportunity to review recommendations from a special study panel for making the state’s tax code simpler, more competitive, and more attractive to job creators.

Forbes recently released its annual Best States for Business rankings, citing high costs, a slow economy, and regulatory burdens in dropping Connecticut to 36th. That analysis mirrors CNBC’s annual Top States for Business study, which now ranks Connecticut’s business climate as the fifth worst in the country. These types of rankings create a perception, good or bad, about a state’s viability as a place to start and grow a business and create jobs. They impact the decisions companies make about where to invest, expand, or relocate.

TWEET OF THE WEEK

It’s a prime opportunity for the business community to play a central role in ensuring legislators are informed and understand the implications of their decisions. If the close results from Election Day indicate anything, it’s that Connecticut voters want more than the status quo. They want action on their top concerns—the economy and job creation.

Capital investments and talent will flow where there are the best opportunities for success. There’s nothing Connecticut can do to change that fundamental law of economics. We’re either going to offer great future prospects or they will go elsewhere.

Our low rankings in these studies must reinforce a sense of urgency that all of us, including the Malloy administration and state lawmakers, should have about improving our business climate. Collective efforts by the business community to communicate and engage with policymakers have generated many positive results over the years.

CBIA and dozens of other business, professional, and community groups support the CT20x17 campaign and its goal of making Connecticut a top 20 state for business by 2017. The objective? Building a vibrant, growing economy with more opportunities for good, well-paying jobs.

One of the most notable was the campaign CBIA and other business groups spearheaded to reform workers compensation in Connecticut, resulting in landmark legislation that stabilized what was the country’s costliest workers comp system.

Over the past six months, supporters laid the foundation for this campaign, raising public awareness and developing a series of commonsense policy recommendations ahead of the 2015 General Assembly session.

Our message was simple: reform workers comp, it’s costing Connecticut jobs. We were effective because everywhere legislators went, they heard the message that an unfair system severely limited employers’ ability to grow their workforce. Legislators heard it so often that they realized they must do something about it, and they did.

Now, the real work begins. We must channel this initial enthusiasm and support into meaningful advocacy, making sure that every bill raised in the coming session is considered for its impact on the state’s business climate and our economy. We need every legislator from every community to hear from business leaders and employees about the campaign and how its success will help attract and retain world-class companies and encourage more young people to build their careers and lives here. CT20x17 is an ambitious campaign. Connecticut is challenged by national studies that consistently rank it as a poor state in which to do business.

We need the same energy, commitment, and support to make CT20x17 successful. Stay informed, stay engaged, and hold elected officials accountable. I’m looking forward to seeing the changes CT20x17 will bring to the state. I’m optimistic that by working together, we will make Connecticut a top state for business.
